Bridge Design Manual Section 900 STRUCTURE LOAD RATING
UpdatesJanuary, 2019
October 30, 2018
Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act
Signed into law by the President Obama on
December 4, 2015
Section 5577.02 of the ORC exempts vehicles
operated by any municipal or volunteer fire
department from weight restrictions listed in
ORC 5577.01 through 5577.14. ODOT’s Chief
Legal interprets these sections of the ORC
such that emergency vehicles can operate on
all public roads in the state without weight
restrictions. According to the interpretation of
the ODOT’s Chief Legal, these sections of the
ORC do not restrict emergency vehicles from
using posted bridges.
✓ Ensure the people, equipment, goods etc., can
safely travel on the bridges;
✓ Ensure the bridges remain safe and usable to
travel during bridges’ anticipated life span;
✓ Comply with all Federal and State laws
However,
✓ Emergency Vehicles are allowed to travel
unrestricted on roads and bridges in Ohio to
perform their duties, per the ORC
❖ Analyze the bridges for the vehicles travelling on
them
❖ Inform the operators of the vehicles if those
bridges are not safe to travel
▪ By posting those bridges for the reduced and
safe load limits
▪ Communicate with the operators
