Dear Parents/ Caregivers Kia Ora, Malo e Lelei, Talofa, Mabuhay, Greetings JUNIOR EXAMS OVER - TIME FOR REFLECTION Your children have completed their exams and teachers will be giving them feedback. It is important that you are also part of this process. Please show an interest in their results, celebrate what they did well and discuss areas where they need to improve. YEAR 8 CAMP I extend my sincere gratitude to all parents and staff who assisted with Year 8 camp last week. We appreciate the personal sacrifice you made to attend camp. The camp experiences for our students would not be possible without their support. JPC COMMUNITY DAY – For Your Information The government funds only 75% of the school’s actual running costs. We have to find the rest. Community Day is not compulsory. Students have the option of coming to school where they will be supervised. All the money raised goes directly back to support students via the PTA. In the past, this has help fund the adventure playground, sunshades, a transit van, water stations, among other things. The PTA are a small and dedicated group of parents who go the extra mile and fundraise in a variety of other ways as well. If we abandoned Community Day, it would negatively impact on facilities that we provide to your children. If you have other fundraising ideas that you are prepared to roll up your sleeves and help the PTA implement, come along to the next meeting. Form teachers and Mrs McHugh will be following students in regards to this event. SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE END OF YEAR STAFF FUNCTION ON MONDAY 11th DECEMBER. The last day of school for students is 12pm Friday 8th December. The office will be closed Monday 11th and reopen Tuesday 12th to Friday 15th from 8am-4pm and closes for the year on Friday 15th at 4pm. God bless Patrick Walsh

YEAR 7 AND 8 JOHN PAUL COLLEGE SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS Last Thursday, the Junior (Y7/8) Squash Championships were held at Geyser City. Students are to be congratulated for their behavior on and off the court. It was also pleasing to see how much the students had improved their game over the season. In the Boy’s Championship round, the game between Toby Roche and Jamie Sakrzewski was a highlight, with Jamie eventually winning three games to one. Both boys displayed a high level of skill and determination and was very entertaining to watch. In the Girls Championship, Kiara Dudson and Taylah Hyde played off in the final, with Kiara the winner in the end. Both girls are to be commended for their determination and effort throughout the game and have the potential to go much further in the sport. The results are as follows:

Congratulations to Gisele Howard, Year 8, who competed in the BOP Zones Athletics Champs at Papamoa last Wednesday. Competing against fields of approximately 30, she competed in six events including two heats, two finals, on what was a very hot day!! Resulting in:

2017 NORTH ISLAND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS WATER POLO A mix team travelled to Auckland to compete in Boys Division II Water Polo. 4 days of competition, 18 teams competed in this grade. JPC played 7 games, won 6, lost 1. (Goals for 80. Goals against 8) JPC top their group in round robin games, which earned them a quarter final against Hamilton Boys High B.

JPC took the lead early, which gave our bench players pool time, JPC won 10 - 3 Onto the semifinal against Mt Maunganui College Boys team, it ended up being one of those games, just didn’t go our way, losing 2 – 1 in a fast moving match. 12 shots on goal only 1 went to the back of the net. On to the bronze medal match.

This was a comfortable win 11 – 1 against Westlake Boys B. (This was their biggest defeat) Some awesome Water Polo was played by everyone in the team, our defence backed up the hard work being done by Ronan in Goal. Dear Parent/Caregiver RE: JPC Itinerant Music Scheme Students attending John Paul College are fortunate to benefit from the Itinerant Music Scheme. This scheme allows students to learn musical instruments/vocals during the school day for a discounted price. The cost of most lessons is $85 per term. This fee assists the school to pay itinerant music teacher salaries and also includes a $25 fee which pays for photocopying, purchase of sheet music, instrumental repairs etc We offer the following instrumental lessons at John Paul College:

Piano/keyboard (note: piano lessons are $12.50 a lesson)

Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass

Brass – trumpet, trombone

Wind – flute, clarinet, saxophone (alto, tenor, & baritone)

Guitar – acoustic (including Classical), electric guitar, & bass guitar

Drum Kit

Vocals – soprano, alto, tenor, & bass

If the instrument you are interested in is not listed above please enquire by sending me an email It is recommended that if your son/daughter takes instrumental/vocal lessons at school, they also join a music extra-curricular ensemble which usually runs after school and at lunchtimes in the John Paul College Music Department. Rock Bands (resources and band room available) The John Paul College Jazz Band has gone from strength to strength over the past few years where we have achieved considerable success in local competitions and events. The Music Department’s goal is to bui ld on this success with more students taking woodwind and brass lessons, and explore the possibility of taking the John Paul College Jazz Band/Concert Band to play in Australia in the near future. When choosing an instrument, please consider the possibility of your son/daughter learning one of these amazing instruments and getting involved with the Jazz Band/Concert Band. We need m re students learning alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and flute. If your son/daughter is interested in learning an instrument please fill out the slip below as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as spaces fill up very quickly. By the end of the year it is expected each student will have had a minimum of 32 lessons.
