*************************************************** Church Regulations Regarding Fast and Abstinence
The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one full meal is permitted, and two smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On days of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept ( Easter Duty ) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 1, 2020 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 7, 2020.

Stewardship Reflection: 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” MATTHEW 5:44 Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe it softens their hearts as well.

Bulletin Quote ~ “There is no space where God is not; space does not exist apart from Him. He is in heaven, in hell, beyond the seas; dwelling in all things and enveloping all. Thus He embraces, and is embraced by, the universe, confined to no part of it but pervading all. - Pope St. Hilary (315-368), Feast Day February 28
Dear Parishioners,
Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
On November 17, 1957 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a sermon at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Here are some excerpts from that speech that certainly indicated that Dr. King preached and lived Jesus’ radical love.
“Jesus was very serious when He gave this command. He wasn’t playing. ……… Yes, it is love that will save our world and our civilization, love even for our enemies. ……… How do you go about loving your enemies? ........... First, you must begin with analyzing self. …… There might be something within you that arouses the tragic hate response in the other. Second thing, you must discover the element of good in your enemy. …….. That within the best of us, there is some evil, and within the worst of us there is some good. .…... And when you come to the point that you look in the face of every man and see deep down within him the ‘image of God’ and you begin to love him in spite of what he does……. find the center of goodness and place your attention there and you will take a new attitude.”
“There’s something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive.”
“And when we discover the power of love……. we will be able to make of this old world a new world. We will be able to make men better. Love is the only way. Jesus discovered that.”
Jesus commanded us to love our enemies; Dr. King told us to see the image of God in everyone and Sister Alice (last week’s Dear Parishioner letter) suggested we be Ministers of Affirmation. Now it’s up to us!! Love, Sr. Eleanor

MY SHARE TO HELP
Come and reflect on the upcoming Sunday readings with fellow parishioners and Fr. JJ. This is an opportunity to reflect and to share how God is speaking to you, and to others through the Sunday readings. The main question we ask when we meet is - What is the Good News in these readings? Sometimes it’s a word of comfort, sometimes it’s a word of challenge, but it is always a word of life. Feel free to stop by. We meet every Saturday. Place: Rectory Basement Time: 8:30 am to 9:15 am Upcoming Dates: February 22nd & 29th, March 7th.

Lenten Soup Suppers 2020
During the season of Lent you are invited to enjoy a Soup Supper on February 28th and March 20th.
It is an evening for the whole family to share a Lenten meal with other parishioners and families. We will begin with prayer at 5:30. Soup will be served immediately following the opening prayer. Our meal is shared in the parish gym/auditorium. A free willing offering/donations will be sent to various organizations. The menu will include three kinds of homemade meatless soups, fresh bread and crackers, beverages and cookies. In order to prepare for the event we will need to know the number of persons attending. Please complete and return the tear off below to the Rectory or Parish Center and indicate the evenings you will attend and the number of children and adults. Please put Lenten Soup Suppers on the return envelope. ---------------------------------------------------------------
