COLD/FLU SEASON – SOME PRECAUTIONS! In order to ensure the health and well-being of all, some precautions are advisable. If you are sick or showing symptoms of a cold/flu, please remain at home for your own well-being and for the well-being of others in our parish family. There is no obligation to attend Mass if you are ill. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to use the available hand sanitizer before entering the sanctuary to assist in the distribution of Holy Commun-ion. As a general rule, close contact with others is best avoided. At the sign of peace, consider a kind word, a bow, nod or a wave instead of shaking hands. Hand shak-ing is not required. Avoiding close contact with others will go a long way in helping prevent the spread of the common cold/flu. Thank you for your cooperation!

Cardinal’s Appeal & Renew+Rebuild Over the last year we have been engaged in our capital cam-paign Renew+Rebuild. As a result of our fundraising efforts for this capital campaign, our 2017 Annual Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal goal was included in our Renew+Rebuild goal. This means that as payments are made on Renew+Rebuild pledges, our 2017 Annual Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal will be paid first before we begin to get funds to pay for our projects like AC in the Auditorium/Gym and the repurposing of the convent into a new Parish Center. This is why it is so important that all those who regularly contribute to the Annual Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal make a pledge to Renew+Rebuild. At this time the 2018 Annual Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal begins. Many of you have or will soon receive a letter from Cardinal Dolan asking for your support of the 2018 Ap-peal. The 2018 Annual Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal will run as usual. This goal is not included in our Renew+Rebuild goal. As always, we appreciate your generosity.

It’s never too late. In Lent, we should look ahead rather than back. Though time is too precious to waste, it must never be thought that what was lost is irretrievable. Once the Divine is introduced, then comes the opportunity to make up for losses. GOD IS THE GOD OF THE SEC-OND CHANCE. Peter denied, but he had the second chance in which to become as solid as a rock. There really is such a thing as a “second birth.” Being born again means that all that went before is not held against us. The thief on the right side of the Lord on Calvary wasted a human life, but in accepting pardon won eternal life.

A Note about Becoming Sponsors For Baptism and Confirmation

It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or older (14 years old in the Archdiocese of New York), having received Catholic Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Catholic Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. Parents may not be sponsors. A baptized non-Catholic may replace the second Baptism sponsor as a Christian witness. Non-Christians may not be Sponsors. Former Catholics may not be sponsors. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Cath-olic, attending Mass there weekly. Those away at college or graduate school or in the military should seek certification from their campus ministries or chaplains. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are cho-sen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or re-ceived sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. Here, at Seton, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the pastor to registered members of the parish who are practicing Catholics, and who meet the above criteria. Please see the pastor after Mass on Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire about getting a certificate.

Shortly we will begin training sessions for Lectors and Ex-traordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass and to the Homebound. What’s expected? A candidate must be Catholic at least 14 years of age to become a Lector / 18 years of age to become a Eucharistic Minister, having re-ceived First Holy Communion and Confirmation. The candi-date must be leading a life of faith in keeping with the func-tion to be assumed, not bound by any canonical penalty legit-imately imposed or declared, be reverential, respectful of her faith, and of good moral character; and if married, be in a valid marriage according to the law of the Catholic Church. Lectors should possess the necessary ability and talents to proclaim the Word of God in a clear, dignified, and effective manner. Extraordinary Ministers who will bring Holy Com-munion to the sick should be able to minister to the sick in a compassionate, prayerful, and sensitive way. They should possess psychological maturity and the ability to keep confi-dences, not discussing indiscriminately the condition of pa-tients or their homes. If you are interested in any of these ministries, please call the rectory. Questions? Please see Fr. Quarato. Working together to serve the Seton Family.
