AA Thought for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the two verses we read today from Chapter 8 in the

Letter of St. Paul to the Romans, St. Paul reminds

us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and that the Holy Spirit

helps us to pray. When we do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit prays and intercedes

for us.

God Bless,

Fr. Ray

St. Joseph Cemetery News

The American flags have been removed from the cemetery by the VFW.

However, if you still wish to have a flag near your

loved one’s grave, please call the Cemetery Office at 860.747.6825 and we can supply you with one. We ask that you place the flag close up to their larger headstone

plantings of any kind are prohibited near flat markers.

We also ask that no pets are walked in the cemetery for the safety of all who visit.

Mailboxes with the label “CEMETERY RULES” have been placed in the cemetery on two metal poles in

sections A & B. The Rules have also be placed on our website, www.olmct.org under the button “St. Joseph

Cemetery”. Please call the cemetery office at 860.747.6825 with any questions. Thank you for your

cooperation and understanding.

Is a Vocation Right for You? The master knows that pulling the weeds will destroy the plants. He lets them grow

together and will separate them at the harvest. Jesus loves his people and gives

them time and space to change their ways and follow him. If you are called to follow him by becoming a priest or

religious, call Fr. Michael Casey, Director of Vocations, Pastoral Center, 860-761-7456, e-mail [email protected]

or visit the web at www.hartfordpriest.com.

Worship Button is Available When you go to MyParish Ap you will see a

Worship button on the top row. If you do not see it, you will need to shut off your phone and restart

it so that the button will load. Most of the prayers for the Mass and the readings

for the day will be displayed. If you turn your phone sideways the font will become larger.

Please do not forget to silence your phone! This way you are able to follow along with the

Mass without holding a hymnal that includes the readings. Also, under the Prayers Button are a

collection of prayers that are prayed at Mass under the heading, “Order of Mass Prayers.” A few lines below that is listed the “Prayer to St.

Michael the Archangel.” There is also a Readings Button available if you wish only to have the display of the Mass readings in front of you. Hopefully these tools will help you

in following and praying the Mass.

22020 Mission Cooperative Appeal Collection… Our second collection this weekend is for the benefit

of the Polish Redemptorists through the annual Mission Cooperative Appeal Collection. The

Redemptorists are unable to join us in person because of the coronavirus pandemic; nonetheless, we seek to

assist them with our prayer and financial support

toward expanding youth ministry and completion of two new pastoral centers in Eastern Europe.

We ask your generous response, especially in these difficult times; checks can be made out to The

Catholic Mission Aid Office. Like the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast in this week’s gospel,

our compassionate sharing furthers the Reign of God. Thank you for your kindness.

Scavenger Hunt A number of things are new or different in our parish church since public Masses ended in the middle of March. Next time you are

in church, look around and try to identify at least four new aspects. In a couple of weeks, we will print a listing of changes. You will then be able to match up your list with ours.

Mass Intentions for 2021

We will begin accepting Mass intentions for 2021 on Wednesday, August 19th for those who would like to arrange a Mass to

celebrate a wedding anniversary or a special birthday. We will accept all other intentions

starting on Thursday, August 27th.

HOMILY FOR THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: GOD GIVES HIS CHILDREN TIME TO GROW

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike

Today’s message is centered on the leniency of God.

In the first reading we hear the following words that were addressed to God:

“Although you are sovereign in strength, you judge with mildness, and with great

forbearance you govern us; for you have power to act whenever you choose” (Wisdom

12, 17).

Page 5: John Patrick Publishing...2020/07/19  · 8am Christopher J. Roberts 1st Anniv. Jean Kaczynski 1st. Anniv. Francis Vasile 1st. Anniv. Alexander Garewski Month’s Mind Noon Confession

This is true because God has the power to

do whatsoever he wills; at several moments he

had chosen to be lenient with us sinners.

The leniency which God displays towards us is not weakness, but

simply an opportunity for us to be saved, a period of grace.

Unfortunately, we have constantly taken God’s patience for granted. St. Peter

emphasized this when he said:

“Think of the Lord’s patience as your opportunity to be saved” (2 Pet 3:15).

The parable of the weeds in today’s Gospel better explains God’s patience and tolerance in giving us a chance to grow-up in his word

(Matt 13:24-30).

As any gardener knows, weeding can be the greatest threat of all to the life of the young

seedling. At first, the problem is one of identifying which is which. The weeds must

be left until the seedling can be clearly recognized. Even then, removing the weeds

may pose an even greater threat. It might sever the seedling’s root system. Often the

weed brings the seedling away with it.

That is also how difficult it is to try to root out the so called “evil people” in our midst. This

is because the Lord does not desire the death of a sinner, but rather that he/she is

converted and lives (Ezk 18, 32).

The overall intention of God is to see that his children whom he so loved that he gave his

only begotten son so that they might not perish, but have eternal life (Jn 3, 16/17), may

truly obtain his mercy by having a conversion of heart and turning towards him.

In the second reading we are called to rely on the help of the Holy Spirit

who surely leads us to God and even enables us to pray when we do not know how

to pray and what to pray for (Rom 8, 26-27).

We pray that God’s leniency may not be taken for granted by the way we live our lives and we ask also that by the help of his spirit, we may obtain divine grace and favors so as

to enter with him into eternal life. Taken from: https://www.catholicforlife.com/
