Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) Session An RLI session was held on Saturday, September 12th at Georgia Regents University (formerly known as Augusta State University) in Augusta. President-elect Paul Pieschel attended the session from our club. RLI is a wonderful opportunity for all Rotarians to learn more about what they bring to Rotary, what their club brings to Rotary, and what Rotary International has brought to the world. It is composed of three parts, starting with what you as an individual bring to Rotary. RLI is also a great way to network with members of other Rotary club members and find out their best (and worst) practices. Conversations and discussions continue while folks are eating, and we promise the food is always great. Another perk is that by attending a RLI session you’re helping the club earn points towards the Gold Club award. Thank you Paul Pieschel for representing St. Simons Island Rotary at RLI!

Major John Dancer Helene & Doug Kornwolf

From The Salvation Army

We have had a big variety of speakers and presentations over the years made possible by

very dedicated Program Committees. It’s not an easy job, and the committee works hard to

deliver a continuum of speakers and topics to enlighten us, entertain us, and inspire us.

Last week, our speakers were definitely coming from the entertainment side of the equation.

Gracing our “stage” were three representatives for the Salvation Army, beginning with Major

John Dancer from Brunswick who introduced colleagues from Jacksonville, Helene and Doug

Kornwolf. The Kornwolfs are lifetime entertainers. Helene, originally from Montreal, was a Las

Vegas showgirl, and Doug from New York, a lounge singer and magician. According to Doug,

the two met in California over four decades ago, married, performed together, played hard, got

the cure, found religion and ultimately joined the Salvation Army as Evangelists. Their

presentation was unique to say the least – a combination of magic show and religious revival.

Doug would perform a magic trick, ending it with the word “Amen.” He involved the Rotary Club

members in the act asking them to select playing cards, and help perform a variety of tricks – the

ever popular colored scarves out of the hat trick, the upside down beer bottle in the cylinder trick,

and several card tricks. The best trick was the serial number on the dollar bill.

“Magically” the dollar bill went from his inside his pocket into a

sealed wine bottle! The serial numbers were the same on both bills

so it had to be the same dollar, right? Doug ended with the

guillotine trick, and much like Houdini, was eventually able to free

himself! An amazing feat of Prestidigitation!

Thank you, Doug, Helene and John, for the entertainment!

We will support The Salvation Army again his year with our

bell-ringing initiative. Be sure to sign up when Paul Pieschel

asks for volunteers this December. It’s an hour well spent!
