On  October  11,  I  was  finally  able  to  attend  my  first,  and  possibly  last,  Duck  Splash.  Everyone  there  was  so  friendly  –  from  all  the  other  high  schoolers  volunteering  for  Key  Club  to  the  parents  taking  their  adorable  children  around.  I  arrived  for  the  afternoon  shift  where  our  school  was  assigned  to  the  Shark  Bite  Booth.  The  game  was  simple:  you  get  three  plushies  for  three  tries  at  the  price  of  one  ticket  and  as  long  as  you  make  it  inside  the  inflatable  shark’s  mouth,  you  were  able  to  choose  a  prize  from  the  basket.  I  loved  seeing  the  kids  walk  by  the  booth  and  being  drawn  to  the  inflatable  shark.  We  would  cheer  every  time  they  make  it  inside  or  encourage  them  if  they  missed.  It  was  so  entertaining  watching  them  debate  over  which  prizes  to  get  because  there  was  so  many  to  choose  from.  Some  would  cutely  ask  for  recommendations!  There  was  also  a  lot  of  opportunities  to  meet  other  Key  Clubbers  working  nearby  booths  and  we  even  got  some  really  good  food  (burgers,  fries,  and  a  drink)  for  free.  All  in  all,  this  event  is  a  perfect  example  of  what  Key  Club  is  all  about  and  I’m  so  glad  I  came.                            -‐Colene  Encarnado

    AIDS WALK 2014

On October 12, I participated in Aids Walk. We were able to meet up friends that we knew from other schools. Everyone was so enthusiastic, which made it a lot of fun. We walked 6 miles. It was funny to see how empty Melrose Ave was. It was cool seeing the names of different groups that participated in the walk. Even though it was a tiring activity, it was easy to forget how exhausted I was because of talking with all my old friends---and new friends. The best part was making it to the finish line. It felt good to help those in need of such a horrible disease. -Leiriza Trinidad

FALL FESTIVAL

This  month,  I  attended  the  Dorris  Place  Elementary  School’s  Fall  Festival  to  help  fundraise  money  for  their  music  program.  Not  only  did  I  help  save  the  music  program,  I  was  also  able  to  create  new  bonds  with  the  people  I  met  and  strengthened  the  ties  with  my  friends.  I  met  really  fun  people  and  it  was  great  to  get  to  know  them.  It  was  truly  an  inspiring  event  as  it  aimed  to  raise  $13,000  in  6  hours!  I  mostly  helped  out  with  the  food  booth,  which  started  off  really  hectic  –  too  many  people  ordering  and  too  little  workers!  However,  with  the  other  volunteers’  assistance,  I  was  able  to  get  the  hang  of  it.  It  was  really  nice  to  serve  the  little  children  who  came  to  support  their  school.  In  the  other  booths,  our  fellow  key  clubbers  were  helping  out  with  the  game  booths,  entertaining  the  guests  and  children.  It  was  amazing  to  see  such  a  large  amount  of  people  attend  the  event,  and  it  showed  me  how  much  they  truly  cared  for  the  music.  Hopefully  more  people  will  attend  next  year  and  create  some  awesome  memories!         -‐Brian  Woo

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Adrian Rodriguez

Congratulations to Adrian Rodriguez for earning the Member of the Month Award for the month of October! Thanks to his friends and our fellow wolves, Adrian has been formally exposed to the magic of service as he ends his last year of high school with service and a smile. Adrian’s attendance has surpassed our expectations as he began to step out of his comfort zone and attend events without the need of his friends and initiated friendships.. Each event brings new faces which has never really hindered Adrian’s ability to have a good time. He brings a new light of perspective and energy to events and we hope he continues to serve our community with passion and admiration.

OFFICER OF THE MONTH

8

Congratulations to Brian Woo for earning the Officer of the Month Award for the month of October! This month, Brian has shown outstanding work as John Marshall’s Treasurer. The month of October is inevitably tough on all officers since we begin to collect membership dues. Therefore, it is an even greater stress upon our club treasurers. For example, not only has Brian focused on keeping tabs on membership dues but he has continued his strive for service while involving his friends as well. He has continued to expose to other students and members that you can be an intelligent, hard-working, and kind person even with all the activities Brian has going on in his life. We hope he continues to serve and lead along side our members for the rest of our term!

Brian Woo
