JOHN E. BAI.LAINE COLLECTION
Ballaine was born in Iowa in 1868 and was brought to Washington in 1897
by his parents. He attended, but did not graduate from Whitman College. He
was a teacher for a while, then spent the next few years in newspaper work.
In 1897 and 1898 he was secretary to Governor John R. Rogers and Adjutant
Genral of the Washington National Guard. Very little of these po~itions
appears in the collection. He then served in the Philippines during the Spa-
nish-American War, attaining the rank of Major.
In 1902, Ballaine founded and organized the Alaska Central Railway
Company, and its construction branch, the Tanana Construction Company.
The bulk of the collection is devoted to this enterprise.
In 1903 he founded Seward, Alaska. Much of the collection is devoted
to Seward real estate transactions, handled by Ballaine's brother, Frank,
operating from Seward as the Ballaine Brothers Company.
In 1905, Ballaine sold his controlling interestin the Alaska Central
to Eastern interests, remaining secretary and retaining a directorship.
Shortly thereafter began a bitter feud that ended a few years later with
Ballaine completely ousted from the Alaska Central. Oddly enough, there
is almost nothing in the collection from the later stages of this affair.
The remainder of the collection is devoted to Ballaine's subsequent
business endeavours, almost all involving Alaska, and his attempt to write
a sort of autobiographical history of Alaska.
