Car of the MonthJohn Dowd Jr’s

1956 Jaguar XK 140

continued on page 15

My interest in Jaguars began in the earlysixties, when I saw my first E-type inperson.

After searching the local paper formonths for Foreign Cars For Sale, I foundan ad for a 1956 XK-140MC DHC(Drop Head Coupe). The price was$600. I enlisted the expertise of a friendwho owned an XK (I think it was a red56 XK-140 FHC). Danny checked forrust in all the usual places, we took it fora ride and I purchased it on the spot inApril 1964. It was black with redConnelly leather interior and the exteriorpaint was original and flawless. It didn’tneed much and was completely originalexcept for three items (see below).

At the time I was in the fourth of a five-year undergraduate course in ElectricalEngineering at Northeastern University. From April 1964 to Spring 1966, I drovethe Jaguar daily into Boston fromLawrence to school (but not in the win-

ter) and to co-op jobs in Burlington andWilmington.

The Jag had a few idiosyncrasies: theelectric fuel pump, which was located onthe frame beneath the passenger seat, would occasionally fail to start; the pas-senger had to lean out of the door andwhack it with a rubber mallet until itstarted clicking.

In 1966, I purchased a 427 CorvetteCoupe and put the Jag up on blocks inmy garage. It was moved from house tohouse (garage to garage) until I retiredfrom Raytheon in 2008. At the urging ofmy oldest daughter, I had the Jag broughtto RMR Restorations in Hollis, NH, inApril 2009 and they started a five-and-a-half-year-frame-off restoration. Therestoration didn’t take that long, but Iwould run out of money and asked RMRto stop for months at a time.

The restoration revealed several non-original flaws: The outside rear view mir-rors, which were installed by the state-side dealer, were too far back on thefender and were repositioned correctlyforward where they should be; but they

are useless in this position.

A chrome faceplate was added in thecenter bottom of the dashboard for anAM radio after the original purchase, butI had the original map drawer put back(that sounds so quaint!) and I added ahidden radio out of sight in the trunk. The most serious flaw was that the headwas no longer the original C-type headthat was in the car when it was built at

the factory and when I purchased thecar, but an E-type head. I had somework done on the Jag in late 1965 byJohn Sherrigan of Speedway Motors lo-cated behind WBZ on Soldiers FieldRoad. I believe he exchanged my C-typehead for the E-type head he had layingaround his shop. What he used my C-type head for, I will never know sinceJohn Sherrigan died of cancer 25 yearsago. RMR found a C-type head for anXK140 in England – purchase price plusshipping: $2,500. Anyone need a headfor an E-type?

Prime Minister ’sMissive

Bob DoughertySo Saith the Prime Minister

I’m completely out of superlatives aboutthe Show of Dreams…what more canyou say than…FANTABULOUS!!!We had another record breaking showwith 238 registered cars on the field! Ifthis keeps up, in the words of RoryScheider from “Jaws”, “we’re going toneed a bigger boat”!!! Putting this to-gether is a team effort that starts withour triumvirate of Di and Bob Stanleyand Norma but certainly doesn’t stopthere from all the volunteers who dodgedthunderstorms setting up on Friday anddealt with the heat while erecting tentsat o-dark thirty on Saturday morning tothose manning the registration and re-galia tables, loading and maintaining thecooling tents with water, parking the carsgoodness, the list just goes on and on toall of you, THANK YOU. This doesn’thappen without you! At the end of theday we will be presenting the HighHopes Foundation and NH Food Bankwith $6000 each, which makes all theblood, sweat and tears worth it. Again, thank you all, you did a FANTA-BULOUS job!

Kellie Braconier led a contingent to KingArthur Flour and the Harpoon Brew-

ery, ably assisted by her brother filling infor Karl who is still recovering from sur-gery. Kellie did a fine job and the drive, which started in rain ended in bright sun-shine and a pleasant day with some greatcraft brews, always a good combination!By the time this newsletter comes out wewill have attended a car show and dinnerin Jaffrey and a picnic and concert at StGaudens in Cornish NH, an event Kimand I are very much looking forward to.

As we roll into September, I will put outmy plea for volunteers to help ready His-toric Motor Sports for the Reliability Runwe will need folks to help set up tablesand chairs on the 6th, and folks to helpwith parking and check-in on Fridaymorning, the 7th, along with setting up forthe BBQ on the 9th. What BBQ yousay…following the Run we will have aClub BBQ to welcome back the cars aftertheir 600 mile odyssey on Sunday after-noon the 9th. All are welcome to enjoythe afternoon, it should be a lot of fun!

Stowe is a week early this year, the 14th

– 16th of September. An added featurefor Stowe this year will be soaring in aglider on Sunday the 16th. Karl and KellieBraconier have set up a session atSugarbush Soaring about 25 miles southof Stowe for glider rides, more info to

come but you will need to let Karl andKellie know early if you plan to attend.Watch for a flyer with detailed informa-tion. I believe Shirley Splaine is settingup a tour of Squam Lakes Brewing inHolderness on the 23rd, while BobMitchell will be headed off to the 1000Islands for a three day rally, September29th – October 1st. Of course theSpeckled Hen Tour will be in Dover, VT,at the Kitzof Inn the 29th – 30th of Oc-tober. Kim and I are contemplating a tripto Cape Cod for the British Legendsweekend in Sandwich, MA, the 5th –7th of October and there is a new eventthe 13th at Applecrest farms in Hamp-ton more info on that when it becomesavailable. Keep in mind that last year itwas top-down driving weather almostinto November so keep the cars gassedup and tires inflated, we may be drivinguntil the snow falls!!

First we reviewed the past events:

Myopia Polo great event with an op-portunity to have a great boot picnic.Bob Dougherty promises to dress prop-erly for the next visit. The VermontCountry store visit and Bar-b-que wasenjoyed by those who attended thatevent as well. New member NickGrewel had a car show / fund raiser athis property in Sanbornton to raise fundsfor the Boys and Girls club. Theweather did not cooperate, but therewere a few BCNH members who at-tended and the cars that were on dis-play were well worth seeing. A beauti-ful DB5, and a 1938 Bugatti were myfavorites. The next event was the an-nual Show of Dreams which was wellattended with 238 cars. Next monththe High Hopes Foundation and the NHFood Bank will be with us to receivetheir donation checks. There were fourcars that went to the King Arthur Flourand Harpoon Brewery tour. Theweather was bad that day too!

We then went on to discuss the upcom-ing events – please check to see the listof events to decide which ones youwant to participate in.

The next meeting at Moe Joes will beon September 10th – due to the LaborDay holiday.

Show of Dreams

continued on page 9

Undaunted by a forecast of 60%chance of rain and thunderstorms onJuly 28th, the BCNH Show of Dreamscommittee continued as planned withthe preparations for the show. On showSaturday, the weather dawned clear andbright, signaling a beautiful summer day

ahead at the Alvirne Hills House Fieldin Hudson, NH. The day promisedperfect conditions for top-down driv-

ing and viewing, and British car enthu-siasts from all over New England re-sponded by coming to the show indroves. The 2018 Show of Dreams seta new participation record with 238cars entered, competing in 31 classes! This record is especially meaningfulbecause it signals more funds raised forour featured charities, The High HopesFoundation of NH and The NewHampshire Food Bank.

The show field was superbly organizedand easy to navigate, due, as SOD com-mittee chair Diana Stanley explained, to“the number of club members who vol-unteered for Friday and Saturday to setupand break down the show field. We op-erated like a well- oiled machine whichmade both days easier than they wouldhave been with fewer hands available.”Both participants and spectators wereentertained by this years’ fun new addi-tion: British street signs for each row ofcars. Baker Street (think SherlockHolmes) and Downing Street (who livesat #10?) were two of the favorites, withPiccadilly Circus fittingly marking thefood court. And don’t forget the witty“Flushingham Palace” sign for the com-fort area!

There was always something happeningat the show, with lively British (of course)music provided by DJ Jim George, “Rov-ing Reporter” interviews with Pinch

Polenchar, prize raffles, a 50-50, and aspirited silent auction. For sale by the

BCNH was an extensive collection ofBritish regalia and Show of Dreams T-shirts, a hot item which was sold out byday’s end. Throughout the day engag-ing representatives from the NH FoodBank and High Hopes mingled withspectators, explaining the urgent needstheir organizations meet.

Shade was a valuable commodity as thetemperature climbed into the low 90sand high humidity made hydration achallenge. But British car enthusiasts aresmart and savvy, finding shady spotsalong the tree line, or under the coolingtents provided by BCNH. Bottled wa-ter and ice donated by sponsorsquenched everyone’s thirst; when hun-gry, delicious food truck barbecueadded some spice and generous scoopsof ice cream cooled us down.

The main event, of course, was the carjudging, accomplished for most classesusing the people’s choice method. The2018 featured marques—Land Roverand Triumph TR-6—were additionallyjudged by experts in the field. The cov-eted Best of Show award this year wasearned by a 1927 Rolls Royce Phan-tom I shown by Greg Zimmerman. Aunique entry, this car was not outfittedfor luxury (forget the Grey Poupon), butinstead had been converted for use as autility vehicle, with wooden side panelsand wooden benches inside! Congratu-lations to several BCNH members who

won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in their classes;for the complete list of winners seebcnh.org and the newsletter. The awardsceremony also included a special Brit-ish Marque News presentation for “carsthat are driven,” awarded to a 1962Jaguar E-Type owned by Rod Gilbert, and a BCNH jacket presented to DaveTownsend in recognition of the fabulousposter artwork he designed—and do-nated— for the show this year.

No endeavor of this magnitude is with-out its challenges, however, as SOD or-ganizer Norma Karle explained. “Get-ting sponsors was a real challenge thisyear,” she said, “something we need towork on for next year.” So, BCNHmembers, your mission for 2019 is tocontinue the show’s tradition of excel-lence by keeping an eye out for spon-sors and sending them Norma’s way!

In the end, the true winners are not thosewho go home with trophies, but thepeople who benefit from High Hopesand the NH Food Bank. Diana Stanleywould like to extend “many thanks toDavid Townsend, Historic Motor

Sports, Don & Karen Irving, LandRover Bedford/Goodwin Motor Groupand all the sponsors who continue to sup-port the show year after year.” Thesecontributions, she notes, are invaluableas “we would not be able to help NewHampshire families in need without theirhelp.”

BCNH Regalia

I recently took a road trip to SaratogaSprings, NY, to attend a wedding andmy wife and I had the good fortune toleave the kids and kid mobile at homeand take a 1979 MGB. It was a beauti-ful ride across New Hampshire and Ver-mont and 500 miles later that little LBCdelivered us back to Maine at 32 MPG!

One neat feature this car has is a vacuumgauge so I could watch the needle gofrom economy to power when I put myfoot down.

While driving, I started thinking of all thetips my dad used to share with us kidsabout getting the best mileage from a car.

Keep the motor in top-notch tune.

Use higher octane gasoline, the enginewill run easier and give more power.

Check the tire pressures weekly andover inflate them a little bit.

Make sure the brakes are in good work-ing order, no dragging your feet.

Keep your speed around 55 MPH.”(Darn, what fun is that?)

Build up momentum going downhill andcoast uphill” (Or at least don’t try topower up the hill.)

Avoid rapid starts and stops.” (Flowthrough the traffic lights.)

Avoid hard cornering” (No way I couldever comply with this one.)

My dad had many more, but my all-timefavorite was pretending there’s an eggunder the gas pedal. The teenager saidHUH? I’d bet dad thought we weren’tlistening, but I still like that quote and Ieven remember to try it from time to time.

With the cost of fuel today I was quitepleased to get about double the gasmileage of the big family vehicle (not to

Northern CouncilKing Ar thur Flour Drive

Saturday, August 4th we woke to over-cast skies with intermittent showers. Wewere the lucky ones, driving west, ourdestination Norwich VT and King ArthurFlour. They are an employee-owned com-pany making top-quality and consistentlyproducing flour for over 200 years whichis no easy task, but they take such pridein their products.

Four cars with seven people met up at theCommon Man Inn in Plymouth andheaded out about 10am. Unfortunately afew folks had to beg off due to the rainsand water problems at their homes. Hopeeveryone survived okay!

We took back roads over to Canaan andtook a potty break at a Dunkin Donuts.By the time we climbed back into our carsthe sky was lightening and showing a hintof sun. We took a great route acrossRudsboro Rd., which Karl and Kelliefound by accident from chatting with a lo-cal fellow that we happened upon whiledoing the run and clocking the mileage. He was quite a character who owns andservices Harley motorcycles and sellsmachine guns. But that’s a whole otherstory. So back to Rudsboro Road, thiswas a newly paved, windy, curvy road thatinvites you to put the pedal down just awee bit more and enjoy the beautiful coun-try scenery flying by. We arrived at KingArthur to a very full parking lot but onceinside we had the pleasure of smelling andtasting some amazing fresh cookedbreads. We sampled some homemade icecream sauces and maybe bought a fewtoo many things (not mentioning any namesDoc).

We spent about an hour there and thenheaded south about 16 miles to the Har-poon Brewery, which after shopping andtasting some great treats we had workedup a powerful thirst. When we first ar-rived the line was out the door, luckily we

had made reservations ahead of timeand breezed past the line.

Bill and Sue MacDuff joined us for theKing Arthur tour, Bill and PennyMeyer, Bob Doc, Kellie with herbrother David riding shotgun enjoyeda great lunch and sampled some ofHarpoons finest brews. Kellie triedpoutine for the first time (and was agood sharer) and guaranteed this won’tbe the last, so good with just the rightamount of gravy and cheese!

It’ s very possible we will do this tripagain next year so other members canjoin us and enjoy this ride.

mention the infinitely more smiles permile). I started thinking about energycosts in general and did a little onlineresearch.

Did you know that it takes 50.3 millionBTU’s of oil equivalent energy to makea ton of new steel and requires 62,600gallons of water? (I have no idea whyso much water.) But it only takes aquarter of that energy to make one tonof recycled steel versus new.

Following the comparisons, one ton ofrecycled steel saves 1.4 tons of iron oreand 3.6 barrels of oil. Recycling alumi-num is an even better deal as it takesfive times the energy to make new alu-minum compared to recycled alumi-num.

My feeling is that as British car enthusi-asts we’re helping the bigger picture byrecycling these cars and because they’regenerally pretty good on miles per gal-lon we’re also helping reduce our con-sumption of gasoline. Combined with allof the great benefits of playing withsports cars, this added bonus is a goodthing.

So I’m encouraging everyone to keeptheir cars tuned up and I’m interested inhearing from you about the mileage yourcars get. I’m thinking of adding an igni-tor and sport coil for that slightly hotterspark, wire wheels or rostyle wheels toreduce the unsprung weight at the wheeland other little racer tricks to improveour enjoyment. I mean reducing our car-bon footprint.

Car of the Monthcontinued from page 2

RMR completed the restoration, exceptfor the top, in September 2014, justthree weeks before my youngestdaughter’s wedding. The Jag, sans top,was used to take my daughter to thechurch and my wife and I to the recep-tion. Thank heavens it was a picture per-fect day.

When I purchased the Jag in 1964, thecanvas top had pulled away from thewooden header in one section in the backand the red leather seats had a few tearsand holes. I contacted Sal Messina ofColumbia Seat Cover in South Lawrenceand they gave me a quote of $300 toreplace the seat covers with red leatherand replace the canvas top. That was in1965; 43 years later, it would cost morethan 57 times that to replace just the top. With the pressure of my youngerdaughter’s wedding over, I again con-tacted Columbia Seat Cover. (Sal’s fa-ther had done the job 43 years previ-ously and still came into the office at age92.) Sal Jr. made a very nice boot coverwith biscuit piping for free but he ex-plained that the top was beyond his ex-pertise and he couldn’t do it. The top,as Jaguar built it, had a mohair headliner, and a canvas top with horsehair in be-tween.

I talked with Paul Russell of Essex, MA,who has done restorations for RalphLauren and many other heavy hitters. They did the job. It took 3 months and

cost a king’s ransom but the Jag resto-ration was finally complete in October2017. It was used in my older daughter’swedding.

I bring the car to six or eight car showseach year and about half the time it bringshome a Trophy. When I drove the car toBoston in the 60’s, I didn’t notice howdifficult it was to drive. With the rack andpinion steering, Moss crash type trans-mission, limited visibility (where’s theback-up camera?) and the tendency torun hotter than a $2.00 pistol, it is a hand-ful to drive at my age. Is it time to turn itover to the next generation?

Brit BitsThe Monadnock Council has had twovery fun trips recently. One was to theVermont Country Store and Craigs AllAmerican BBQ in Vermont and Monad-nock Berries in Troy, NH. MonadnockBerries is owned by Anthony and FenellaLevick, BCNH member’s and let me tellyou, this place is really to write homeabout.

There were acres upon acres of berriesat the foothills of the mighty MonadnockMountain. We picked berries, had agreat BBQ lunch and listened to a vi-brating band and then went to Anthony’sbrewery a few miles away. It looked likea rainy day but it cleared up just for us.We are a council that loves to take gor-geous drives and then have a spectacu-lar experience often with music or per-

formance arts, and, of course, greatfood. As you all know, the Monadnockis the quintessential region of NewHampshire, just like the picture booksof small New England villages, so comeon over and join us for fun, beauty andadventure.
