Maritime Law Book

In August 2016, libraries received news that after 48years in business as an independent law publisherMaritime Law Book was going out of business;shutting down production of its print law reportersand online databases. Colin Lachance was the former CEO of the CanadianLegal Information Institute (CanLII). Eric Applebyfounded Maritime Law Book as a response to a realneed for access to judicial decisions particularly hardto find cases from the Maritime provinces.

The announcement states that under its newownership, MLB will continue to operate as MaritimeLaw Book, relaunched “with a world-class legalinformation processing engine that leverages cuttingedge natural language process technology to makeresearch easier and more efficient”.

Law Library AccessThe Marit ime Law Book platform athttp://www.mlb.nb.ca will be shutting down by theend of November. Law Library Corner: RFID

Between 2013 and 2015 Western Libraries locationshave been converting the old barcode and tattle-tapesystem to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)technology. The purpose behind barcodes andtattle-tape is to provide security for physical items aswell as to link the items to the library managementsystem (for circulation, usage information, cataloguerecords etc.). RFID "tags" being affixed to the physicalitems, allow for certain enhancements to service, datacollecting, and tattle-tape-less security.

Enhancements of RFID

The Law Library began tagging its books this pastsummer. By Christmas we expect the circulatingmonograph collection, the reserve collection, and thereference collection to be tagged.

The new equipment is already in place: new gates(see photo), new scanning pad (located under theService Desk), and a self check-out unit (soon to beactivated).

So, how does RFID improve the circulationexperience?

•Library users are able to sign out materials at self-checkout stations. This will be particularly useful whenthe Law Library is open but the service desk closed,e.g. when the library is a study hall with a securityguard on duty.

•Multiple items can be checked in and out at the sametime. Staff do not need to scan each book separatelysince the scan pad can read several RFID tagssimultaneously.

•Libraries will have remote access to gate statistics -such as how many people come in and out of thelibrary and which items are setting off the detectionalarms.

We are still experiencing some bugs in the system andsome incompatibility with our system and other libraries’systems but we hope to have things running smoothlyin the near future.

Weeded books not adopted out have an alternativeto the bin. Thanks to Rebecca Northcott for givingnew life to some withdrawn books.
