HEAD COACH SCOTT MARKSBERRY

Scott Marksberry enters his fourth season as head coach of the men’s soccer program after leading the women’s squad from 2011 through 2012.

While his first two seasons at the helm hovered around .500, Marksberry led the Golden Eagles to a breakout season in 2015, which produced its best campaign since 2004 and tied for the most wins since 2001 (14) with a 13-6-1 mark. JBU posted 10 clean sheets, the most since 1990. With a landmark 1-0 win at No. 3 Oklahoma Wesleyan, John Brown earned a victory over the highest-ever ranked opponent ever in program history. Despite a difficult 2-1 extra-time setback in the Sooner Athletic semifinals, the team finished with an 8-1-0 (.888) SAC record, the best single-season mark in program history.

During his tenure at JBU, Marksberry has coached 29 Commissioner’s Honor Roll players, 14 Academic All-Conference honorees, 12 All-Conference winners, six Scholar-Athletes, eight SAC Player of the Week winners and one NAIA National Player of the week honorees.

Prior to his arrival at John Brown, Marksberry spent the 2008-10 seasons as the head varsity girls’ soccer

coach at Wheaton Academy in Wheaton, Ill. There, Marksberry accumulated three extremely successful seasons which included a 2009 2A Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championship. For his efforts in 2009, he was named the National Christian School Athletic Association (NCSAA) Coach of the Year.

While the head coach at Wheaton, Marksberry produced one Parade All-American and four NCSAA All-Americans while landing a player on the All-State squad, six on the All-Sectional team and an impressive 12 players were given All-Conference accolades. Marksberry amassed a 50-12-3 (76.9 percent) record over three seasons.

From 2006-07, Marksberry returned to his alma mater at Union (Tenn.) where he held the position of assistant men’s soccer coach. While in Jackson, the Bulldogs went 18-13-3, earning a spot in the NAIA Regional Tournament. Union boasted an impressive No. 9 in the nation ranking during the 2006 campaign.

Marksberry began his time in the coaching profession after graduation, spending three and a half years as the Assistant Director of Operations at Memphis Athletic Ministries, an organization dedicated to

providing hope and a future to the at-risk youth of inner-city Memphis, Tenn. through the vehicle of sport. While under his administration, the programs saw a 250 percent increase in participation as Marks-berry undertook the responsibilities of marketing, scheduling and managing leagues in over 20 locations around Memphis.

The Union men’s soccer record book is riddled with Marksberry’s name as, during his time as a collegiate athlete, he found himself landing in numerous top-10 categories in program history. The three-year captain holds the top spot in career games started (87) and games played (89), while finishing with the seventh-best career goals tallied (23) and fourth-best career assists mark (25). Marksberry was also an impressive student, gaining National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Scholar-Athlete nods in 2000 and 2001.

On the pitch awards accumulated by Marksberry included an NCCAA All-America first team nomination in 2001 after earning honorable mention accolades the year prior. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts degree in recreation and

sports, notching the highest grade point average among students in his major.

In order to stay at the top of his game at Union, Marks-berry trained during the summers with the Botafogo FC in Riberao Preto, Brazil. Botafogo competes in the Campeonato Paulista which is the top professional soccer league in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

In July 2015, Marksberry completed his NSCAA Premier Diploma.

Marksberry and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Siloam Springs with their two sons, Wyatt and Caleb, and their daughter, Emerie.

After an impressive freshman start by any measure, Terry Brown pieced together the best four-year career in program history, powered by his breakout sophomore season in which he set then-program records in goals, points and shots. In addition to a pair of first-team All-America seasons at the NAIA level, the striker was named to the NCCAA All-America team twice, including a pair of NCCAA National All-Tournament teams. To this day, Brown holds program records in points, goals, game-winning goals, assists, shots attempted, shots per game (4.84), penalty kicks made and total games played. During his four seasons, Brown helped JBU post a 64-19-2, including three NCCAA national tournaments, highlighted by a national runner-up finish in 1990, and the Golden Eagles’ second-ever trip to the NAIA National Championships in 1993.

Virgil Cannon, John Brown’s lone All-America defender, built a sterling four-year career which was capped off by a season that not only saw him post personal bests in scoring, but was part of a back line that limited opponents to 1.96 goals per game. In 2000, the Golden Eagles posted a 14-8-0 record, finished 7-3-0 in the Sooner Athletic - a second-place finish, and made an appearance in the Sooner Athletic tournament semi-finals as well as the NAIA Regional VI finals, both of which runs were halted by juggernaut sixth-ranked St. Gregory’s (Okla.). Named a four-time Sooner Athletic All-Star, Cannon also excelled in the classrom by earning back-to-back NAIA Academic All-America honors in his final two seasons.

Fifth on the all-time program scoring record list, Glenroy Corbin helped cement his 1985 NAIA All-America third team honors in 1985 by guiding the Golden Eagles to an 11-4-2 record, including a 1-0 double-over-time win over rival Bendictine (Kan.) in the NAIA Area Playoffs before bowing out to powerhouse Rockhurst (Ill.) in the first round of the NAIA National Championships. Despite a loss in JBU’s first-ever appearance at the national tournament, Corbin’s four game-winners and 80 shots earned him John Brown’s first-ever All-America nomination. Additionally, Corbin landed All-America status from the NCCAA in 1985 and 1986, including a spot on the NCCAA National All-Tournament team in 1984 and 1985. During his four years, JBU captured back-to-back NCCAA titles in 1983 and 1984, going 5-0-0 at the NCCAA Championships.

The four-time Sooner Athletic all-conference selection had a breakout year in 2000, where he set program single-season records in both points (72) and goals (32). Still the holder of the all-time career records of points per game (2.54) and goals per game (1.03) Peirano also landed All-America third team honors in 1999 and 2001 as the Golden Eagles finished 45-30-3 of his four years. Also a three-time All-Region earner, Peirano claimed JBU’s only Sooner Athletic Offensive Player of the year in 2000, alongside the conference’s Player of the Year accolades.

PROGRAM ALMANAC

What once began as a quarter-mile grass track and infield to serve as the home of the Golden Eagle track and field programs of the mid-60’s, Alumni Field made its official debut in the fall of 1978. After extensive renovations forced the men’s soccer program to play the 1981 campaign on the then newly-constructed baseball field, Alumni Field reopened in the fall of 1982.

As the men’s soccer program began in the fall of 1978, the squad quickly took over the remnants of the track and field program’s home field by placing wood planks in the approxi-mately 15-inch trenches between the former track and infield, originally designed to facilitate water drainage. For three seasons, despite the efforts of laying down the AstroTurf-cov-ered planks, players had to maneuver around the remaining eight-inch drop and return that ran the length of the field inside both sidelines.

After taking the helm of the program in the fall of 1980, for-mer 29-year veteran head coach Bob Gustavson quickly pieced together a schedule for the program’s first varsity season, but

faced the problem of playing at an unnamed venue. Alumni Field was then chosen by Gustavson to label a field used by a program without a single graduating class, at the time, in hopes it would serve as a future gathering place for former John Brown players.

In the fall of 1981, removal of the trenches, the leveling of the playing field and the installation of a scoreboard that remains to this day began. Tifway Bermuda grass was also laid in hopes of withstanding the brutal Arkansas summers and the occasional snowfall of its winters.

With the renovations underway, the men’s soccer program had to find a new home for the 1981 season, forcing Gustavson to relocate the team to a temporary field on the newly-construct-ed baseball field that was erected on the current practice and intramural fields.

After the center and right field home run fences were removed and the pitcher’s mound was leveled, the Golden Eagles posted a 7-1-2 record at its provisional home field en route to an

appearance at the ‘81 NCCAA National Championships.

In the fall of 2002, John Brown added women’s soccer to its slate of athletic offerings.

Incremental improvements have been made over the field’s 35-year existence, including the construction of the pressbox that was completed in time for the 2012 season.

In the summer of 2014, lights were installed on site, allowing for the first night soccer contest to be played in the fall of 2014. The men’s soccer team fell in a 1-0 overtime loss to William Woods (Mo.), in which Alumni Field saw its largest capacity crowd of approximately 2,000 fans.

Attendees of a Golden Eagle soccer match can still see, to this day, remnants of the grass track that circled the field over 35 years ago, offering a glimpse into the transformation Alumni Field has experienced over three decades into the first-class facility it is today.
