Experiments In Digital Art
Digital art is a general term for a range of artistic works and practices that use digital technology as an essential part of the creative and/or presentation process. Since the 1970s various names have been used to describe the process. Digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art.
As an artist I see myself as a collector of imagery and ideas who responds to the small, the trivial and the ephemeral in the physical world around me. Making art is quite simply the act of visually interpreting what is most interesting either in those moments or in terms of the formal critical models with which I wrestle daily. This push and pull between intellectual understandings and physical experiences is the engine for my artwork.
The subjects in my artwork vary widely and this is likely a product of my various work and educational backgrounds. At this time my art-making process most often involves digital work of one sort or another that is seamlessly blended into or combined with my drawing and painting. In making work I often begin with my scanned drawings or digital photography and/or with the scanning of found objects. In fact, experimentation with both imagery and processes is a constant factor in my work.
The experimental work included in this volume reflects the issues, concerns and possibilities of the time from early 2000 through the spring of 2002.In the summer of 2002 my wife Margie and I had an artist-in-residency in the desert area of southern Texas. My artwork and focus changed considerably after that project concluded. JAL 4 October 2012

What is a digital artist?
More generally the term digital artist is used to describe an artist who makes creative use of digital technologies in the production of artworks. In an expanded sense, "digital art" is a term applied to the work of a contemporary artist who uses the tools of mass production or commercial or industrial digital media or technologies. I am an artist trained in traditional media (sculpture, painting, photography & illustration) before being introduced to digital tools. This hybrid background allows for a blending, a merging or traditional and new media.
