An astronomer uses a wide range of scientific techniques to study the universe. This would include its origin and its make-up. You could specialise in a particular area, such as planetary science or the formation of galaxies. If you love science and you are interested in stars, planets and the universe, this job could be just what you are looking for.

To become an astronomer, you will need to have good powers of observation and an enquiring mind You will also need to have a lot of patience.

Astronomy is mainly an area of academic research. Working as a professional astronomer would normally involve studying towards a postgraduate research qualification such as a PhD

Astronomy is divided into two main areas – observational astronomy and theoretical astronomy.

Observational astronomy In this area, your work could include:

* collecting data from satellites and spacecraft using radio and optical telescopes * developing new instrumentation and maintaining existing equipment * developing software to interpret the images captured by satellites * analysing data and testing theories.

Theoretical astronomy Your work in this area would involve:

* creating complex computer models to develop theories on the physical processes happening in space * analysing the results of past observations to develop new predictions * making observations and testing theories * analysing data to help develop our understanding of events in the universe.

You would keep up to date with developments in your area of interest by going to meetings

and conferences, carrying out research, writing reports and presenting your findings.

As well as working in laboratories and observatories, you could also work in a museum,

planetarium, or in education - for example, teaching and carrying out research at a

university

Information for young people From summer 2013, the Government has changed the law so that all young people in England will have to continue in education or training until their 18th birthday. If you started Year 11 in September 2012, you will need to continue in education or training until at least the end of the school year in which you turn 17. If you are in Year 10 or below, you will need to continue until at least your 18th birthday. This does not necessarily mean that you have to stay in school, and there are a number of options that you can choose: • Study full-time such as in a school, college or with a training provider; • Full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training; • An Apprenticeship

You are of course free to take a summer job and then go onto to a full-time course from September. But, if you decide to continue in full-time work you will need to combine that with part-time study.

Children (under 16 years of age) are not allowed to work:

• without an employment permit issued by the education department of the local council, if this is required by local bylaws

There are also special rules which only apply during term times and school holiday times.

Term time rules

During term time children can only work a maximum of 12 hours a week. This includes:

• a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays • a maximum of 5 hours on Saturdays for 13 to 14-year-olds,

or 8 hours for 15 to 16-year-olds

School holiday rules

During school holidays 13 to 14-year-olds are only allowed to work a maximum of 25 hours a week. This includes:

• a maximum of 5 hours on weekdays and Saturdays • a maximum of 2 hours on Sunday

During school holidays 15 to 16-year-olds can only work a maximum of 35 hours a week. This includes:

• a maximum of 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays • a maximum of 2 hours on Sunday

Songwriting club: Our Songwriting club is unlike any of the other clubs going in Southampton at the moment. Aimed at younger singer/songwriters as well as the older generations of songwriters – it’s for everybody who wants to write music themselves or collaboratively. Here’s what our songwriting club will provide you: A two weekly club on Monday nights from 6:30 – 8:30pm. Meet new people for collaborations, partnerships, starting groups or just inspiration Write new music, or develop existing ideas, with the help of 1 or more songwriters. Rock club: Young musicians will join the club and meet other young musicians. They’ll join a band, rehearse for 10 weeks and then gig at a local music venue. It will be coached by a young musician who been signed to Sony records. Rock Club is £94 for the 10 weeks and takes place every Wednesday evening between 6:30 and 8:30pm. Parents will need to phone ahead to pay the fee and complete an enrolment form. There are currently 10 musicians enrolled. AMS.TV: On Friday evenings, we want to broadcast youngmusicians over the internet performing songs on our Academy stage for their friends to tune in and watch. It’s for those who can’t get into music venues to play or watch. Kids interested should get in touch if they want to play. Soul Cellar AMS gigs: Every month, our students will be performing at Soul Cellar, supporting headlining acts. What is an apprenticeship?

There are three types of Apprenticeship you can apply for depending on your current skills and qualifications:

Intermediate Apprenticeship (level 2)

Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3)

Higher Apprenticeship (level 4 or above)

When you start work as an apprentice you are in a real job.

An Apprenticeship is a real job with training so you can earn while you learn and pick up some nationally recognised qualifications as you go. Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete and cover 1500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from things like engineering to finance advice, veterinary nursing to accountancy.

Yes, all employed apprentices will get a wage. The current 'apprentice National Minimum Wage' is currently £2.68 per hour*.

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage rate does not apply to Higher Apprenticeships.

However, as skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages – in fact, research has found that apprentices earn an average of £200 net pay per week.

The apprentice 'National Minimum Wage' applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. If you reach age 19 and have completed the first year of your Apprenticeship your employer must pay you at least the 'full National Minimum Wage' rate for those aged 18 to 20.

The National Apprenticeship Service also runs Apprenticeships vacancies. This is an online system whereby employers and learning providers can advertise and manage vacancies, and potential apprentices can search, apply and then manage their applications for Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships opportunities anywhere in England.
