Southampton goes the extra mile for Sport Relief. The Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile takes place in Southampton on Sunday 23 March.
The Mile event is open to people of all ages and abilities to take part in a challenge and help raise money for Sport Relief. To make the Mile as open and accessible as
possible, you can participate however you like, for example as a fun run or walking as a family group. Sport Relief harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives for the better.
By doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone can do good and feel good. Comic Relief spends the money raised to help vulnerable people living incredibly
tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world's poorest countries.
The fun starts at Guildhall Square between 10:30hrs - 13:00hrs where you can enjoy the atmosphere and sporty activities and limber up at the mass warm up sessions before the Mile waves kick off. Watch out for the entertainment to keep you going
along the route.

If you have excellent hand-to-eye coordination and want a flying job, this job could
suit you well.
As a helicopter pilot you would fly single- and multi-engined helicopters for
business, leisure or emergency response purposes. For example, you might
transfer oil rig workers to an offshore platform, or ferry business clients between
cities as part of a charter service.
In this job you would need to be able to concentrate well for long periods. You
would need to lead the crew. You would also need to keep calm and be decisive.
To fly a helicopter you must be over 18 and licensed by the Joint Aviation
Authorities (JAA). There are different types of licence, depending on which type of
helicopter you are flying and whether you are charging fees. Another way to gain
flying experience is to sign up for pilot training with the armed forces.
Your main responsibilities before a flight would include:
• checking weather conditions and airspace restrictions along your planned route • filing flight plans • working out fuel requirements and maximum loads • checking the helicopter's equipment and instruments • carrying out safety checks • gaining clearance from air traffic control to take off.
During the flight, you would use a range of instruments to navigate, control height
and speed, and communicate with air traffic controllers. After landing, you would
complete all post-flight paperwork, including a duty hours log, before preparing for
the next flight. You may work alone or in a captain and co-pilot team on a larger
helicopter.

Information for young people From summer 2013, the Government has changed the law so that all young people in England will have to continue in education or training until their 18th birthday. If you started Year 11 in September 2012, you will need to continue in education or training until at least the end of the school year in which you turn 17. If you are in Year 10 or below, you will need to continue until at least your 18th birthday. This does not necessarily mean that you have to stay in school, and there are a number of options that you can choose: • Study full-time such as in a school, college or with a training provider; • Full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training; • An Apprenticeship
You are of course free to take a summer job and then go onto to a full-time course from September. But, if you decide to continue in full-time work you will need to combine that with part-time study.

What is an apprenticeship?
There are three types of Apprenticeship you can apply for depending on your current skills and qualifications:
Intermediate Apprenticeship (level 2)
Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3)
Higher Apprenticeship (level 4 or above)
When you start work as an apprentice you are in a real job.
An Apprenticeship is a real job with training so you can earn while you learn and pick up some nationally recognised qualifications as you go. Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete and cover 1500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from things like engineering to finance advice, veterinary nursing to accountancy.
Yes, all employed apprentices will get a wage. The current 'apprentice National Minimum Wage' is currently £2.68 per hour*.
Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage rate does not apply to Higher Apprenticeships.
However, as skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages – in fact, research has found that apprentices earn an average of £200 net pay per week.
The apprentice 'National Minimum Wage' applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. If you reach age 19 and have completed the first year of your Apprenticeship your employer must pay you at least the 'full National Minimum Wage' rate for those aged 18 to 20.
The National Apprenticeship Service also runs Apprenticeships vacancies. This is an online system whereby employers and learning providers can advertise and manage vacancies, and potential apprentices can search, apply and then manage their applications for Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships opportunities anywhere in England. The system is free and available on the Apprenticeships website at: www.apprenticeships.org.uk.
