In this unit, students travel with two children to different countries. They listen to and read about different kinds of festivals, collect information about international celebration and, as a wrap-up, prepare a scrapbook about one of them.

1. Display flags of 13 different countries on the board. (Canada, United States, Mexico, Brazil, France, Italy, South Africa, Ethiopia, England, Sweden, China, India, Vietnam)
2. Ask students if they can identify the flags. When a flag is identified, put its name tag using a magnet.
3. Distribute the documents.
4. Ask students to situate each country that is on the board on the map they received.
5. Distribute Student Book Chatterbox and ask students to go to page 66 and correct the previous activity.
6. Tell students that they will listen to a conversation between Paul and Paulette about their journey.
7. Ask students to trace Paul and Paulette’s journey as they listen to the tape.
8. Play the recording. If students find the activity too difficult, play the recording and stop at each mention of the next stage in the journey.
9. Correct the activity.

Activity One: May Day in England

1. Refer students to Student Book p.67. Draw their attention to the illustrations and ask them to name what they see. (Group of people dancing, hat, flowers, man with a stick)
2. Ask a student to read the instructions. Check understanding.
3. Tell students that they must find the sentences that best describe Paul’s pictures. They have to write the four sentences in their document entitled Celebrating the World.
4. Tell students that they can work in teams of two, but that you will circulate and evaluate their English while they work.
5. Call on students to share their suggestions for the best description of each picture. Write their suggestions on the board and comment on them. Underline key words.
6. Ask students to complete the second part of the activity. They have to extract more information from the text by answering supplementary questions.

Activity Two: A Day in Vietnam

1. Check the homework and review the Wh-question words using the poster.
2. Ask students to go to p.68 of their student book.
3. Draw their attention to the illustrations by asking them these questions:
-What kind of animal is this?-What kind of food do you think this is? -What do you think these children are doing?-What kind of text is this? - Who wrote this letter? -Who is it to? Who is it intended for? -Where was it written?
4. Read aloud the first paragraph of the text and ask these following comprehension questions:
-What does this festival celebrate?-When does this festival take place? -Why does it take place then?
5. Have students read the rest of the text and complete the first part of handout 41 of the document.
6. Correct the order with the class.
7. Brainstorm words that describe the festival and its activities.
8. Ask students to complete the second part of the handout.
9. Call on students to share what they have drawn.

Activity Three: Kwanzaa in the United States
Duration: ___________
1. Refer students to Student Book p.70 and explain that they will be reading a text about a celebration that began fairly recently. Tell them that they will be writing an invitation to a celebration so they must pay attention to the kind of information that is given in the invitation in the Student Book.
2. Have the students read the text What is Kwanzaa ? Individually and answer comprehension questions orally.
- When did Kwanzaa begin?-What is the duration of this holiday?-Who is this celebration helping to remember their African Heritage? -What are the colours of the candles?-What is the signification of each colour?
3. Read the invitation aloud with the students and discuss what information an invitation contains. Write the information contained in an invitation in the board. 4. Divide students in teams of 2 and ask each group to choose one of the festivals in the unit to write an invitation for.
5. Show students how they should proceed to make the object.
6. Ask students to fill in the questions in their document before to start their invitation. When they are finished, they raise their hands and show you their work. If it is correct, they can start their invitation.
7. Post the invitations around the class.
8. Brainstorm on festivities and celebrations that students know. (Chinese New Year, Father’s Day, Hanukkah, Halloween, Holi, Hina Matsuri, Mardi gras, Mother’s Day, Purim, Raksha, Bandhan, St-Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving.
9. Ask students to select one of the celebrations to work on next class. Note the selections.
10. Explain the homework. Tell students that they are highly encouraged to take a celebration that doesn’t exist in Canada.
