Director’s Notes

A year ago, who would have thought we’d be back here where it all began, in the Victor Smorgon Hall at Bialik, and that the theme we chose only days after

Bialik Rising Star 8, would be so poignant today as we adjust to our new lives and our new normal. What the world needs now is, indeed, love sweet love. Love

is something we have all experienced in one form or another and love has been the muse of songwriters for centuries. This year’s theme is a far-reaching one,

that not only traverses through multiple genres of music, but also lends itself to the many expressions, colours and shades of love, and the myriad of emotions

that go to make up what love is. The pandemic has given us an opportunity to re-imagine our show. It threw us curve ball after curve ball and begged us to give

into it. But we did not. Yes, the show is different, but as a school, we kept the small flickering flame alight and made sure that it was going to burn brighter than

ever. The efforts of our singers, instrumentalists and production team, and their positivity and determination to give their best, has resulted in a wonderful show

against all odds. The show is a testament to the human spirit and shows an irrepressible optimism that encapsulates ‘Im tirzu, ein zo agadah’ – if you will it, it is

no dream. Our determination was aided by our unbelievable luck that saw us still being able to record performances in real time, only three days before the

stage four lockdown came into effect. Perhaps there are other powers even stronger than love at work here? Tonight, our virtual audience will potentially be our

largest in the history of the show, which is so exciting. Sit back, relax, pump up the volume and enjoy Bialik Rising Star 9 – online.

Principal’s Notes

Said Duke Orsino in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, “If music be the food of love, play on.” This exhortation to the band was picked up later on in the 17th

century by the composer Henry Purcell, yet love as a theme predated them both.

Tu B’Av. The 15th day of the Jewish month of Av was the matchmaking day for young love during the Second Temple era, and two thousand years later was

the original night of Bialik College’s 9th Bialik Rising Star.

What better theme then, than In the Name Of Love, could there be?

Our twenty four finalists, fourteen backup musicians (one of whom is also a finalist – what better statement of menschlichkeit could we see than this?), two

hosts, technical and media crew, teachers, director, producer and administrator have been working for months to ensure that, despite the Lockdown we are

now all facing and the return to Digital Bialik, The Show Must Go On.

Kol Hakavod to all involved for showing their love of music and community in coming together for BRS in another night of talent, musicality, performance, fun,

mutual support and competition.

If we couldn’t make BRS on Tu B’Av, our wonderful music department has brought Tu B’Av to us! Sit back on your sofa, get a drink from your own private bar,

read your digital program, check your wifi is fully operable and enjoy the evening!

B’Shalom,

Jeremy Stowe-Lindner

Gabe Zafrin Gabe is currently a first-year student at Monash University, studying a double degree in Commerce and Music, specialising in Popular Voice. Graduating from Bialik’s class of 2018, Gabe was ever-present at the music scene at Bialik. He has performed and accompanied at every Bialik Rising Star event since he was in Year 7, winning awards in the Intermediate section and Senior sections of the competition. He also performed with the Bialik Jazz Groovers and played piano in the band for the School Musical Hairspray in 2017, as well as contributing to many other Bialik music events.
