STAFF APPRECIATION BREAKFAST On December 8, the PAC hosted a Staff Appreciation Breakfast. We had a great turnout, and hope the staff enjoyed themselves and the delicious food. A big thank you to Suzy Buckley and Zoilo Herico organizing the breakfast. Thank you, also, to the parents who volunteered their time and breakfast dishes – this event could not happen without you! –: Edna Bevan, Elly Cheung, Janice McGill, Cary Ong, Agnes Ng, Razzak Paracha, Sholeh Salehi, Melody Shi, Vivian Suen, Lily Wen, Pavlina Winkelman, and Mellissa Yu. And a very special thank you to Sarah Banno, Laura Smith, and Stephanie and John Nomellini, who have been supporting the breakfast for years, and have helped make it the success that it is.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALBERT WU! A special congratulations goes out to Albert Wu – our horn soloist at our Sounds of the Season Winter Concert! Albert has been accepted into the National Youth Band of Canada. This is a prestigious group that is formed by auditioned students from senior high schools and universities across Canada. Every year the band travels to a different Canadian province for one week of intense rehearsals and performances. From May 6 - 13, 2018 the National Youth Band will be in Montréal, Quebec. The band will be based at McGill University and will be performing throughout Montréal and surrounding area.

JNB’S ANIMAL RESCUE AND CARE CLUB (ARC) JNB’s Animal Rescue and Care Club (ARC) is looking for donations of items, gift cards, or gift certificates for their e-auction in the new year. Funds raised will go towards helping domestic and wild animals in need through our partner rescue groups and our own dog rescue and training program. Please contact ARC sponsor teacher Margaret Galan at Burnett if you are able to donate.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE CHALLENGE December is always the time of year for gingerbread cookie baking. However, this winter, JN Burnett’s STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) put a spin on the age-old tradition: The Gingerbread House Challenge! On December 15, JNB STEM challenged students to, working in teams, build the tallest gingerbread structures in 20 minutes. Participants were provided with materials—gingerbread, icing, and candy—made by STEM members, and designed architecturally ingenious houses that they ate afterward! The Gingerbread House Challenge was a wonderful event for everyone to spend time with friends and embrace the holiday spirit. STEM is a club dedicated to increase science interest and engagement through hands-on projects, such as the Gingerbread House Challenge. Meetings take place Fridays bi-weekly in Mr. Gill’s room (A213) and the first meeting back from winter break is on Jan. 12. New members welcome anytime!

BLAIR BUDDIES WINTER READING PARTY

Blair Dragon grade 2 and 3 came to visit their big reading buddies in the library. Ms. Galan's and Ms. Wu's students had worked hard to bring magical picture book stories to life. What can be better on a dreary

winter day than great stories and some friends to share them with?

HOUR OF CODE Thank-you to all students who participated in this year's Hour of Code events running from December 4-10 in the library. Congratulations to the students from Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Haave, Ms. Fackler, Ms. Wu and Ms. Jessa who took - and aced - the coding challenge.

SNOW FLAKES Ms. Wu's ELL students made sure that they will be on Santa's Nice List this year. They learned how to create beautiful paper snowflakes; in only 2 classes they transformed the library into a winter wonderland. Thank-you for a job well done!

JN BURNETT SECONDARY SENIORS’ BRUNCH On Thursday, December 7, students from JN Burnett Secondary’s Leadership Club hosted our annual Seniors’ Brunch. It was a fabulous holiday celebration for 130 seniors from the Richmond community. They enjoyed entertainment from the Jazz Band under the direction of Ms. Freeman, the Glee club and Ms. Zuccolo, a visit from Santa and student MCs. The students spent the morning serving soup, sandwiches and dessert, while also getting to know the seniors through conversations, singing, and even some dancing! A big thank you to Ms. Musani, Ms. Cain and Mr. Thompson who worked with the Leadership students to organize this wonderful event. Elizabeth Li, grade 12 student, and a team of dedicated students canvased our local businesses for donations of door prizes for our seniors. We would like to thank the following sponsors who helped in making this a such a great morning for the seniors: Vancouver Whitecaps, London Drugs, Nature’s Path, Smokehouse Restaurant, Pizza Hut, Vancouver Canucks, David’s Tea, Safeway, Starbucks, Tommy Hilfiger, Banana Republic Factory, Polo Ralph Lauren, BC Lions, Sunglass Hut, Mountain Warehouse, Crabtree and Evelyn, and Calvin Klein.

At the end of the brunch, the seniors received a snowman ornament prepared by Ms. Taylor and her Art students. Well done and a big thank you to everyone who participated and helped. We are looking forward to continuing this fabulous Burnett tradition in years to come!

PROVINCIAL EXAMS

Not too long after the holidays, we will be near the end of Semester One and Grade 12’s will be preparing for their provincial exam. The provincial exams that will be written that week are: English 12 (January 25) and Communications 12 (January 26). This information and much more is also available on the Ministry website,

which is www.bced.gov.bc.ca/.

NEW! NUMERACY EXAM Course-based provincial exams are being replaced by Numeracy and Literacy assessments. This move was based on consultation with the Advisory Group on Provincial Assessment. The new numeracy assessment measures application of numeracy skills across the curriculum. Detailed information about the numeracy assessment can be found under Graduation Assessments (https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/provincial-assessment/graduation).

Burnett will be managing an implementation of the numeracy assessment, starting with a subset of students writing in January 2018. Three of our Math classes have been selected to write the exam: Foundations of Math 11, Apprenticeship and Workplace Math 10, and Math 10 Incentive. More information can be provided by your son or daughter’s Math teacher. Students on the 2018 Graduation Program who do not write in January will have the opportunity to write in June or a subsequent school year.

P.E. CHANGEROOMS Just as a reminder to all students who need to use the changerooms during their PE block or for afterschool games or practices. The changerooms are locations where thefts can and do occur. We have had several recent thefts in December of items that were left in the PE changeroom in UNLOCKED lockers. We strongly advise students against bringing anything of value to these areas, and if they must bring something important to them, they should have a lock to secure their items. The PE staff will be locking the gate to the changeroom areas after students have had time to change, and will not be opening the doors again until class ends, so if you need to be dismissed early, you will have to make alternate arrangements.

STAYING CONNECTED We know that every member of our community leads a very busy life, balancing school, work and family responsibilities. PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWS

Our mission: The Burnett PAC works to enhance communication between parents, students and the Burnett staff and administration. This is done through monthly meetings, and through certain special events. PAC meetings are generally held the first Thursday of each month at 7:00pm in the school staff room. PAC Meetings: All parents/guardians of Burnett students are Burnett PAC members, and are invited to attend the PAC meetings, where we learn about events around the school and important issues affecting our children’s education. On December 6th, the PAC hosted a talk on “Making Sense of Anxiety”, by Dr. Deborah MacNamara, Registered Psychologist. We would like to thank Dr. MacNamara for her informative presentation. You can find further information on her website at www.macnamara.ca. It was great to see so many parents attend to learn more about anxiety and how to help their children deal with anxiety.

The first PAC meeting of the new year will be January 11, 2018 at 7:00 pm. We hope to see you then!

Wishing you and your families the best this holiday season and a happy new year! The PAC Executive

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? Negative actions on any networked technology can have a harmful effect on young people.

Online issues are sometimes downplayed with the suggestion that teens can just ‘turn off’ their

devices or platforms if they don’t like what’s happening but these issues can have a significant impact

on a youth’s mental and physical health as well as broader effects on their lives and our society as a whole.

Consider having regular ‘digitalfamilymeetings’ to discuss rules and expectations to maintain a positive digital footprint as well as healthy practices such as no technology in bedrooms and a central overnight charging station for everyone’s phones and devices. One way to help stay connected with your teen regarding the online platforms they use is to ask them to help you set up an account. Have them show you: - how to change the default privacy settings - limit who can see a post or photo - how to tag and de-tag a photo - block someone from contacting you - make a report to the site manager
