The second round of the 2013 V8 SuperTourer series was held at Ruapuna Raceway, Christchurch last weekend. This round, among other things, proves that the V8ST series is one of the most competitive V8 Touring Car Championships in the world. Now that is a big claim I realise, but it’s easy to prove. The 19 cars entered for the round were only separated by 1.8 seconds in qualifying, and furthermore the first 18 cars were only separated by 1.0 seconds. The talent in the pit lane is not just confined to the drivers with multiple champions everywhere you look. The engineers and mechanics are the cream of the crop in NZ and Australia.

We had a busy lead-up to the event with five promotional appearances in and around Christchurch on Thursday and Friday. We really enjoyed meeting the people who are working in Christchurch in this phase of the re-build, and were quite overwhelmed at the level of work going on - it is a very busy place.

Our first practice session on Saturday morning was very promising: second fastest just behind Murphy. In a strange way this result tricked us into thinking there was a lot more to come from me and the car because the lap time (1.23.7) was faster than I had ever been around the circuit. We all thought the pace for qualifying would be 1.22.9. During the next session we used a new set of tyres at the end and changed the car to suit, going third fastest on 1.23.4. We still believed there was more time to find and we changed the car again. Unfortunately we took the car ‘out of the window’ meaning that it did not handle how it had in the previous sessions. In qualifying I struggled in each lap to extract time from the car and ended up 12th just 0.4sec from pole position.

We have learned a valuable lesson at the first and second rounds, when the car is ‘in the window’ we leave it and work on driving and small adjustments to suit the track.

In race one (12 laps) we faced a major fight back. In a series that has identical cars, the differences in speed around the circuit are minor. Therefore passing is difficult and mistakes are hard to find from this group of drivers. We had a solid start and a solid car, running eighth for most of the race until we picked up two positions when SVG spun Ant Pedersen going for the lead. In sixth now and the rear tyres going away from me, Aussie Ash Walsh slipped passed on the last lap and we finished seventh.

Ruapuna report cont...

We started seventh for race two and made a small change to the car to improve it. I didn’t get a great start. As we all funnelled into the first corner I was trapped on the inside, with a few cars passing me on the outside. I was settled in 10th and did not have the pace to go much further forward. SVG closed up on me and we tussled for a lap, he passed me and I passed him back. Unfortunately he forgot to pump his brake pedal and when try-ing to re-pass me he missed the corner and spun me out. I re-joined but then we had damage to the rear bumper and the brake lights were work-ing intermittently. The officials ordered us to come in and fix both issues, but we decided to keep going and fight the decision later. They eventually gave us a drive through penalty and we served that on the last lap to finish a disappointed 18th.

For race three we started 16th on accumulated points for the weekend. I made an excellent start and was through to 10th very early then onto eighth. Murphy’s car stopped and we inherited another position. I eventually ran sixth but just did not have the pace to catch the next group. The team were happy to finish the weekend on a better note, considering we started so well on Saturday.

There is no doubt that we have learned a great deal about the car and what NOT to change on it around qualifying time. Our mechanical reliabil-ity has been excellent thus far and that has helped us in all six races. Being spun out of position in two races has really hurt our points; we now sit seventh in the standings. I am really enjoying the challenge of this series. We are already working through a plan for Pukekohe that includes NOT changing the car when it is in the sweet spot. I can’t wait to race at the ‘new’ Pukekohe with much improved facilities for teams and fans, and a new complex of corners on the back straight too.

We will not be happy until we crack our first win of the season. Thank you for all of the support.
