Welcome to our first edition of Green Light for 2013 and our weekend report from the opening round of the BNT V8 SuperTourers.

I was quite apprehensive before the Hampton Downs weekend held on Feb 15-17. Although we had tested well at our Taupo Test track I still did not know whether we would be on the pace or that my shoulder would last the weekend. Not having a second car and the ad-ditional people involved to run it did feel much better though. At times last year we were feeding 21 people at dinner time for the two car operation and it is surprising how much extra energy that took from me. Onto Hampton Downs and our preparation started well with myself and new engineer Craig taking a track walk on Thursday evening. During a track walk it is amazing to see all of the various features of the track that are different. For example signs on the side of the track that provided really good braking markers, or patches of seal can be used for a turn-in point. This season Craig and I are really focusing hard on my driving and what is required to make the #47 V8 SuperTourer work. Last year we tried to change too many things with the car instead of changing the way I drove the car.

During Friday practice we were very competitive straight away and ended the session first. This was a big boost for me and the team, some of who are new for this season. As the track “rubbered” up and other drivers and teams found their combinations we finished the day fourth in the afternoon. We went through all of the data from the two practice sessions that night and looked to find more improve-ment in my driving and some more from the car. On Saturday we had just one long practice at the end of the day so we used that time well in the lead-up to finish off small jobs on the car. I was really feeling the heat on Friday so decided to put in a cool-air pump to keep my body and head cooler. I was feeling rusty and un-fit due to my lay-off with the shoulder injury. The system works by sending cool water through tubes in a specially designed t-shirt, then cool air from the cool box in pumped into my helmet.

We finished down the order a little on Saturday afternoon (9th) but we learned some very valuable lessons about the car set-up. On Sunday the team faced a big challenge. Qualifying and three races in the same day! Qualifying was held in cooler conditions which made the engines work really well. I thought a lap time of 1.03.4 would be what was required. We had a reasonably good car for qualifying but in one crucial area we had it wrong. This was something we couldn’t change in the 20 minute session, so we just kept throwing new Hankook Tyres at the car and we ended up seventh - some 0.7 from a very quick pole time by Ant Pedersen (1.03.2).

In a way I was relieved to be through qualifying and looking forward to the races. We have learned another good trick for qualifying for future rounds too. The field of drivers for this year’s series has just increased in talent and experience again from last year. The top 13 cars were covered by just 1 second in qualifying. I thought we had a solid platform to start the race with and move forward but unsure how it would be against other cars. I was amazed at the lack of patience shown in the first lap at the first corner by some of the drivers but I didn’t complain as we were quickly into fourth place and then third place after the restart to clear up all of the damaged cars. After the restart we were in third and had Daniel Gaunt behind with more speed in different parts of the track. The front two cars had more pace than us but I thought third would be a good points haul. Unfor-tunately Daniel got a passing manoeuvre wrong and turned me around on lap nine, forcing me to come through the pits to check for damage. We finished 12th but took from that a lot of confidence and ideas on improving the car for the next race.

I haven’t enjoyed myself at a race meeting like I did that weekend and particularly on Sunday for quite a while. The team were working really well and I had time to sit down and analyse my driving as compared to last year when I meddled with the running of the cars. Starting 12th for race two, I knew to save our weekend we needed to move forward quickly. By lap one I knew we had a very good race car and so set off chasing down those in front. By the half-way point in the 20 lap race we were in fifth place and slowly catching Shane van Gisbergen. I worked my tyres a bit hard and had a half spin, dropping off behind Shane and finishing a solid fifth.

The final race grid is decided on the accumulated points from the weekend. We started seventh and very quickly moved forward to fifth, then to fourth. I then had a great battle with Shane for third and managed to get through to second place. Greg Murphy had a four second lead but I was working on closing that down. Oil was laid on the circuit and we all struggled to stay on the track. Shane passed me back and we had a great dice to the end of the race, just finishing behind him for our first podium of the season. It was really enjoyable racing all day. We improved the car and as always the team gave it their all.

We now head to Ruapuna NEXT WEEKEND for round two. As a team we have a real spring in our step after recovering to be fifth overall in the points. I am confident of a very strong result at Ruapuna as we put to practice all the lessons learned from Hampton Downs and I continue to improve my driving of these cars. It will be great to be back at the circuit in front of the big and passionate Canterbury Crowd.

See you down South!
