Global Wildlife Program – Concerted Action to Combat Illegal Wildlife Trade Reducing Poaching, Trafficking and Demand

Da Nang, Vietnam.

Tuesday, June 26 from 16:30 – 18:00 in Room: Hoi An 2

Combating illegal trade in wildlife is an identified biodiversity conservation priority of the sixth replenishment of GEF, represented by ‘Program 3: Preventing the Extinction of Known Threatened Species’ in the GEF-6 Biodiversity Strategy. The Global Wildlife Program (GWP) is a US $131 million grant program funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the World Bank Group (WBG), bringing together 19 countries across Africa and Asia in a coordinated approach to combat wildlife crime along the supply chain, by reducing poaching, trafficking and demand. GWP is a partnership of national governments, executing partners, co-financing partners, donors, and GEF Implementing Agencies working to combat the illegal wildlife trade. The GWP intervenes at the national, regional and global level. The WBG global coordinating project has established a learning and coordination platform to promote enhanced IWT interventions and increase technical capabilities. Country-based efforts focus on implementing national strategies to improve wildlife and protected area management, enhance community livelihood benefits, strengthen law enforcement capacity, and reduce demand. This side event will provide an overview of the Global Wildlife Program’s Knowledge and Coordination platform as well as the GWP’s partnerships with governments, donors, intergovernmental organizations, implementing agencies and the private sector. 1.
