LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hey Key Clubbers! As May comes to a close, so does the school year. I hope all of you survived APs and finals and still had time to attend Key Club events. In case you didn’t already know, this month we celebrated ELIMINATE week! Even though we will be on break for school, that doesn’t mean we have to stop volunteering! There will be many events in the months of June, July, and August, so stay in touch with Key Club and have a wonderful start to your summer! ☼ Your editor,

Grace Martinez

RONALD MCDONALD On May 12th, 2014 myself and other fellow Key Clubbers went over to the Ronald McDonald House to help out. Upon arriving, we were directed to help clean the kitchen by cleaning out the refrigerators. It was an interesting team effort trying to work most efficiently, especially when we went outside to organize the children's toys. At one point we walked to another side of the building, cleaning the playroom and stairways' railings while telling ghost stories. After serving food, having lunch ourselves, and cleaning up, I'm sure every volunteer there could agree upon the fantastic time we had helping out and at the same time, growing as friends. -Lucine Poturyan

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

On Saturday, May 10, I attended the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. For a donation of $5, I, along with the other attendees, was treated to an amazing breakfast of all-I-could-eat pancakes, sausage, and coffee. The funds raised went to our local Kiwanis and towards the Eliminate project, aiming to eliminate maternal neo-natal tetanus from developing nations. For a donation of $5 I was able to help make a difference, all the while enjoying an amazing breakfast cooked by our local Boy Scout troop. After eating the Key Clubbers and I were on call, assisting the Kiwanis however we could. We helped to move chairs, seat guests, and take everything down when the event was over. This was my second time attending the breakfast, and my second great experience while attending. The annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast is a deliciously productive event to attend and is one that, I hope, many more will attend in the future. -Raymond Lobaton

GOTRLA

Girls On The Run Los Angeles was a really exciting event to participate and one that I would love to do again! We began by setting-up the event with bagel cutting, orange cutting, and setting up trash "boxes" and tables. I was really surprised to see how many people came to participate in the event, and yet I never heard about the event prior though I live so near! It was exciting to see everyone getting prepared to run their marathon. Meanwhile, we helped sort out boxes that the coordinates brought, and my goodness, there was so much that needed to be organized, but with my fellow Key Clubbers, of course anything is possible. Afterward, we took some awesome pictures! One of the best marathon events ever! -Kenny Yamaguchi

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

For the month of May, the Member of the Month Award goes to Michael Rodriguez! Michael is experiencing his first active year in Key Club and has shown nothing but his profound love for it. Not only has he become an active member but Michael is also a player on John Marshall’s Boys’ Volleyball Team. Whilst balancing school work, athletics, and service, he has been able to become an active member. With a little persistence and encouragement, Michael has taken the initiative amongst himself and his friends to give Key Club a deeper meaning. For example, he has recently attended the May Division Council Meeting and has shared his experience amongst his friends and other members he has yet to befriend. In addition to this month’s DCM, he has attended the Hollywood & Los Feliz Annual Pancake Breakfast where both events broadened his perspective of Key Club by bringing to attention the large aspect of the club which inhabits the international population and hopefully continues into Michael’s life. -Ernestine Hong

OFFICER OF THE MONTH

Our Officer of the Month award goes to Robina Henson, our beloved Junior Class Representative! That said, Robina has a big heart for someone her size who is an exceptional role model in other activities aside from Key Club. On campus, she is a large contributing factor to assisting the School for Advance Studies at John Marshall High School. In addition, within the course of a month, Robina has helped the rest of our club discover her ability to serve our members tirelessly whilst loving her job. Although she is the epitome of a busy BEE with her Saturday classes and extra-curricular activities, she has gone above and beyond in her duties! Although, no one can accomplish goals alone, so the individual who has assisted Robina is Grace Martinez. Grace is our Bulletin Editor and rests within Robina’s circle of friends since middle school. They have served and continue to serve arduously side-by-side as their creativity flourishes -Ernestine Hong
