Do you have a list of routines that you
run through each Spring? I have a few that
I consider every year and I bet a few of my
routines are on your list.
Cleaning—Do you engage in this ritual?
Do you clean everything that has gone
untouched since November 1? Do you
clean windows, closets and drawers? Do
you feel totally gratified after cleaning with
a vengeance for a day or two non-stop?
Gardening—With all of the frost this
season, we’ll have a lot of foliage that’s
gone to the point of no return. If you don’t
have a compost pile, this is a good time of
year to start one. Are you planting spring
flowers, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers?
Fresh salsa and salad!
Bikini (or swimdress) body prep—I just
looked at a Family Circle from March 2006
and it offered tips on how to get ready for
the beach! The advice suggested walking
every day and consuming lean protein,
whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low fat
dairy. Sound familiar?
Outdoor sports—
Tis the season for soc-
cer and tee-ball or
softball or baseball ,
cheerleader try-outs
and track and field.
Get your ice chests
and pocket change
ready! Along with the outdoor sports
comes nachos, snow cones, and ice cold
coca-cola. Don’t forget the popsicles!
JLLC Placement—When you look inside
this issue, you’ll see information to help
you make your 2011 – 2012 placement
request. As you review your options, con-
sider what talents you have to share and
what skills you’d like to develop.
Whatever is on your Spring to-do list,
remember that this time of year is about
renewal of your body, mind, spirit and
commitments.
Spring is in the air!

In recognition of the need to develop leaders for the future who
have a clear understanding of the total community and who are com-
mitted to its advancement, the Chamber SWLA and the SWLA
Alliance Foundation created the Leadership Southwest Louisiana
program. This program strengthens the potential leadership qualities
of community representatives; it develops leaders with practical
information concerning community problems and issues and estab-
lishes a communication network among the emerging and existing
leaders of the community while challenging these leaders to increase
their involvement in community affairs.
I was part of the recent 2010 Leadership class representing the
Junior League. My class consisted of 28 men and women.
Participants are selected from the applicants to represent a cross-
section of the total community; business, the professions, govern-
ment, education, religion, civic groups, the arts, labor, minority
organizations, and community groups.
The Nomination Committee considers those applicants who
show strong potential for achieving senior policy-shaping posi-
tions in their employment or volunteer organizations, those who
demonstrate a commitment to the community through volunteer
work, and if employed, those who have the endorsement of their
employer.
Through a highly selective and competi-
tive application process, classes bring together future leaders
throughout Southwest Louisiana and reflect the demographics and
industries of the region.
For me, the Leadership experience is something I will always
be proud to have been a part of. As a life long resident of
Southwest Louisiana, I learned more about our five Parish area
than I could ever learn in a lifetime of living here. Not every class
consists of locals from the area. Those not from here also
received wonderful leadership training and now have a better
understanding and appreciate the place they call home. The pro-
gram is 9 months long, and includes one meeting at the beginning
of each month. Upon graduation, participants are instantly placed
into a database with other Leadership graduates. This network of
professionals serves as an instant contact in various fields
throughout the region.
I hope everyone will consider applying for this amazing pro-
gram! If you are interested in representing the League in the
future, contact our Nominating chair.
For further questions or information, you can contact Ann
Barilleaux at the Chamber SWLA.

Correspondence:
We, the management and staff of the Lake Charles Department of Children and Family
Services, would like to extend to you and your organization our deepest gratitude and
appreciation for the generous donation of the blue duffel bags, diapers, and “Play Pal”
play pens to our agency. I can assure you that each and every item will be put to good
use for the children we serve.
Children who enter foster care have suffered the trauma of being removed from their
familiar surroundings of family, home, neighborhood and school. They find themselves
in a situation completely out of their control or ability to understand. We have all wit-
nessed how excited these children become, despite the circumstances, when we give
them their very own bag filled with items they can call their own. Many times children
enter State’s custody with literally nothing but the clothes on their backs, or with a few
meager belongings crammed into a trash bag or cardboard box. Having their own bag
means so much to the children who enter care with so little.
Again, thank you. John M. Nelson, Program Operations Manager

Vicki Clark visited us at our first gen-
eral meeting of the year in September.
Let’s revisit some of the points she made
concerning leadership:
• Leaders develop!
o Develop the potential of women –
each member should be different in some
way next year.
o Leaders are always evolving.
• Leaders are aware!
• Leaders are always looking for
results!
o If Leaguers & Links Golf
Tournament, Marshes to Mansions, and
Mistletoe & Moss are successful, we can
change lives and change conditions in
our community. That is what our
fundraisers are about.
• Leaders meet people where they are!
o Effective leaders listen.
• Leaders advocate for something they
care about!
• Leadership is how to Be NOT how to
Do!
o Leaders encourage each other.
o Leaders communicate effectively and
share.
• You are more than your placement.
o Members can share ideas across com-
mittees. All placements make it possible
for our League to make an impact in the
community.
• Requirements are opportunities.
• Leaders have FUN!
The community needs assessment is
almost done, and we will be able to use
the information to determine if our cur-
rent projects are meeting the needs and
issues of our community. We will also
be able to use the information as a
springboard for ideas in researching and
forming future projects. Therefore, we
will be able to develop, be aware, look
for results, and advocate in our commu-
nity! I hope you are as excited about the
future as I am.

For this month’s environmental scoop,
let’s review some web-based resources
that we can use to help us go green.
I read about this for the first time in our
chamber’s e-newsletter—Soles4Souls.
This is an international non-profit group
that collects shoes to donate in other coun-
tries. Apparently, Americans throw 300
million pairs of shoes into landfills each
year. Do a google search to visit their
website. Or, do your own shoe drive and
donate your gently worn shoes to a local
agency, church or shelter that can share
them with someone in need.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again,
drink from the tap! Plastic water bottles
generate 1.5 billion tons of trash each
year. They also require oil resources for
the production process which creates car-
bon dioxide. There are lots of stylish
water bottles available that can be used to
carry water with you. I purchased a few
cute ones from Target and fill them up
with water and place in my family’s lunch
and snack bags.
The Natural Resources Defense Council
has some great going green guides. Visit
www.nrdc.org and select the “green liv-
ing” tab to learn about different ways to
go green. Guidelines are available for
everything from e-waste to purchasing
local produce. If you’re interested in
accessing resources
about green living,
visit NRDC.
Finally, if you’re trying to find balance
between green choices and staying within
your family budget, take a look at a book
recommended on http://planetgreen.dis-
covery.com (search the home and garden
section). Shift Your Habit by Elizabeth
Rogers is recommended . The book offers
advice that is friendly on your pocket-
book and on small steps to green living.
Do you have a green tip to share with the
Junior League of Lake Charles? If so,
please forward it to
[email protected] by March 15.

For the past year and a half, The Association of Junior Leagues
International, Inc. has been engaged in an exciting and transfor-
mative strategic planning process designed to map the future of
The Junior League Movement. An extremely collaborative
effort among the AJLI Board and Staff and members from a
diverse array of Leagues, this multi-phased process has been
predicated on in-depth research, candid feedback, expert obser-
vations and some definitive recommendations that will ultimate-
ly help us put into practice the strategies that will equip our 292
member Leagues for another century of outstanding voluntarism
and service.
At this point, we have already completed several phases
of the process, including the articulation of a new and relevant
Vision Statement, the distillation of five key questions that sur-
faced as part of our Roadmap work, the documentation of the
findings of several specialized Design Teams, and a Strategic
Plan for the next three to five years.
A fundamental component of the AJLI Strategic Plan,
the Action Learning Teams (ALTs) are a best practices-based
research and development model designed to operationalize and
scale the recommendations developed by the Design Teams.
ALTs are designed to help us think about who we are and what
we do, and further, how we might improve our value proposition
to women by offering them an environment in which they can
thrive as community and civic leaders.
Charged with exploring issues in one of three distinct
focus areas – Membership, Governance and Management and
Community Impact – the ALTs will tackle a variety of issues
and develop innovative solutions within their study area.
Consisting of Leagues willing to make the long-term commit-
ment necessary to work out the kinks in putting theory into prac-
tice, the ALTs will be strongly encouraged to cross-pollinate and
share their learnings with member Leagues across the
Association. The ALTs offer an opportunity to make a very
definitive impact on the process of charting the future path and
success of our organization – and continue the legacy that Mary
Harriman set forth more than 109 years ago.

The Junior
League Joy Drive was a success!
We would like to thank Sempra
Energy Foundation for the grant we
received from their “Helping People
in Need” Program. We were able to
bring Christmas joy to several
underprivileged children and adults
in Southwest Louisiana. We were
able to purchase basic housing
necessities and wish list items for
eight teens in the Transitional
Living Program and twelve teens at
Harbour House. The teens at
Harbour House were especially
excited and thankful for their
new volleyball net!
The Junior League was also
able to purchase ten generous gift
cards for the women at the
Women’s Shelter and provided sev-
eral gifts for their children. The
smiles on those children’s faces left
a warm feeling in our hearts! We
were able to do the same for six
families at Potter’s House. Thank
you for your donations!
We will be getting our hands
dirty next month! The Women's
Shelter has some painting for us to
do! We always look forward to
brightening those rooms! Please
feel free to join us for any event!
We never turn away extra hands!

Nominating Committee slate
Wendy NocillaDonein aDay
The Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen committee has had a full year so far
but we aren’t finished yet! We have held events for schools, Boy Scout groups
and Life Lessons 101.
Our last event was held at Oak Park Elementary School were we hosted 60,
3rd graders. You may have seen that we made the front page the American Press
of Saturday, January 29th.
We have really enjoyed teaching and educating the children of our community
on how to make nutritious and healthy choices when it comes to food and
snacks. Our basic goal is to teach kids to get up and move!
I would like to thank my outstanding committee members: Stephanie Weaver
(assistant chair), Leah Allen, Trish Garber, Tasca Jicks, Lisa Rubino, Sunny
Tracey, Lisa Zimmerman and Kim McMahon (sustaining advisor).

The Nominating Committee is a committee voted upon by the Membership. These ladies were nominated by
you, the membership, and will be introduced at the March meeting. At our April general meeting you will vote for
two names from each group and they will be announced at the May meeting.. The Nominating Chair is appointed
by the president and completes the Nominating Committee. I have had a wonderful year as Nominating Chair and
have full confidence in each of these talented women.
ODI UpdateAJLI offers ODI training and this year it will be held in Tampa,
Florida, on March 11-13. The delegates include Emily Abshire, Mallory
Wall-Padgett, and Haleigh Lyons. If you are interested in attending an
ODI training conference in the future, please be sure to pass that along
to your advisor.

It’s time for your 9th annual Leaguers and Links Golf
Tournament, Monday March 28, Contraband Bayou Golf Club at
L’auberge du Lac.
The format for this year’s tournament will be Team Best Ball,
which for you non golfers means that everyone plays their own
ball, scores their own ball and then the
best score for the hole gets recorded.
We’ve got some great prizes for
the teams: $500 for 1st place
low gross score, $400 for 2nd
place blind draw and $300 3rd
place blind draw. In case you
don’t know, blind draw is a
random selection of scores
prior to the start and those two
scores will be the winning 2nd
and 3rd place scores. The
teams that come closest to those scores win
that prize.
We are counting on our membership to
recruit teams for this tournament; it will
only be as successful as you are in signing
up teams. We are offering to pay the dues
for 2011-2012 for the person who recruits
the most teams.
In case of a tie we will have a drawing.
Simply pick up some registration brochures, put your name on the
back of the team registration section and when the completed form
and payment are received we’ll tally them up.
Please support our committee: Ginger Webb, (Asst. Chair),
Kayci Crookshank and Amanda Pousson with Provisionals: Becky
Nicholas, Jenni Trowell and Lea Poncho in our efforts to raise
funds to continue the great Junior League mission.
Thanks for your support!

On behalf of the Membership Enrichment

the January Area Meetings. It was our goal as a committee to
offer a variety of topics, dates and times for these meetings. We
truly hope that you enjoyed the selections and the meeting you
attended!
We were very pleased with the attendance at each meeting and
even found a few of you attending more than one!! We also
appreciate everyone completing the evaluations at the end of each
meeting. The comments and suggestions you put down will be a
big help to the committee next year.
