ational School of Drama is one of the foremost Ntheatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. Established in 1959 as a

constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the School became an independent entity in 1975 and was registered as an autonomous organization under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The School offers an intensive and comprehensive three-year course in Theatre. Successful candidates are awarded Diploma in Dramatic Art after completing the course. The training is based on a carefully planned syllabus which covers every aspect of theatre, in which theory is related to practice as a part of which, shows are performed before the public audience. The School has two performing wings: The Repertory Company, started in 1964, and the Theatre-in-Education Company (Sanskaar Rang Toli), which was founded in 1989. On completion of the three years diploma course, successful candidates may be considered for enrolment into either of these two companies, or granted a one year fellowship. The extension program of School, under which workshops for adult and children are conducted in various parts of the country, was launched in 1978.

ikkim Theatre Training Centre is the first centre of the SNational School of Drama outside Delhi, established in the year 2011 with 'One Year Residential Certificate

Course in Dramatic Arts'. Situated in the lush green picturesque valley of Gangtok, the centre offers a year-long extensive training in theatre.

The first phase of the course is devoted to training and grooming of the participants in which Yoga, Movement, Martial Arts, Voice and Speech, Music, Western Drama, Classical and Modern Indian Drama and various Methods of Acting are covered. The second phase focuses on technical training, Set design, Lighting, Make-up and other aspect of theatre. In the third phase, the participants experience a series of professional tours in and around Sikkim and other places of India which provide them with ample opportunity to open up and know different cultures, people and territories.

In 2012, the centre started its Repertory Company in which student from the previous year's training program were selected as Artists.

n actor par excellence, Shri Paresh Rawal was born in 1955 in AMumbai in a Gujrati family. He is an actor, comedian, film producer, politician and a Member of Parliament. Completed his

studies from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics, Mumbai, he started performing on stage in 1972 in Gujarati and Hindi. He has performed more than 150 plays and about 7000 performances in India and in countries like the USA, the UK, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Europe and the Far East. He also acted with and directed Naseeruddin Shah in the stage version of 'Slueth'. Worked under the direction of Ketan Mehta in a stage version of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. Besides, he performed 50 shows in 52 days of the play 'Kisan vs Kanhaiya' (stage version of film OMG) in the USA.Shri Rawal made his debut in films in 1985 with 'Arjun' in a supporting role. It was the 1986 blockbuster film 'Naam' that established him as an actor with great talent. He then appeared in over 250 films in Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil and other languages. His most famous films are 'Sir', 'Wo Chhokri','Hera Pheri','OMG', 'Hungama' 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!', 'Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?', 'Sardar', 'Sanju', 'Aankhen' among others.Shri Rawal conferred with Padamashri in 2014 by the Government of India for his contributions to the entertainment industry and received Doctor of Letters (D. Litt.) from Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat in the same year. He has also been awarded The P. L. Despande Award for his contribution to theatre and films in 2013; Dinnanath Mangeshkar Award bestowed by Lata Mangeshkar for his contribution to theatre and films in 2008; Rotary award for Excellence in Profession by Rotary Club, Mumbai South in 1995. He also won Best Actor award for the plays 'Tokhaar' in 1977 and 'Veth Chetu Moth' in 1980 in the prestigious Gujarat State Drama Competitions.As far as awards for the films are concerned, he has won about 21 awards and 28 nominations for different films till now. He received National Award for 'Sir' (1993) and 'Wo Chhokri' (1994). Besides, he has been awarded Best Comic Actor for 'Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?' (2010), 'Hera Pheri' (2000) 'Hungama' (2003), 'Awara Paagal Deewana' (2002) by Apsara Film Producers Guild, International Indian Film Academy, Bollywood Awards, Sansui Viewer's Choice Awards, Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards respectively; Best Actor Award for 'Sardar' (1993) in Bengal Film Journalists' Award; Best Performance by an Actor in a Negative Role for 'Sir' (1993) in Filmfare Awards; Best Supporting Actor for 'Raja' (1995) in Screen Awards; and Best Actor in Comedy Role (in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 2006) in Star Gold Award for his contribution as an actor in different films.

1986, Dinesh Khanna has been involved in acting, direction and teaching for the last twenty years. Deeply interested in literature and translation, he has written several articles on theatre. His published works till now include ‘Kucch Aansu Aur Kuchh Phool’ and ‘Abhinay Chintan’.

bdul Latif Khatana graduated from NSD in 1986 with Aspecialization in acting. In addition to devising, writing and directing several plays that have been nationally and

internationally performed, he has done major workshops on Acting in India and abroad. He has also extensively conceptualised and conducted workshops with children, school teachers, street educators, social workers, TIE artists, theatre practitioners, etc. on Devising Performances, T.I.E., D.I.E., Self Development, Social Integration, Revealing Through Theatre, etc. His notable theatre productions are ‘Oedipus the King’, ‘Caucasian Chalk Circle’, ‘Roze-nama Haftawaar’, ‘Tulsi Tulsi’, ‘Daire’, ‘Kitaboon Mein Halchal’, ‘Sorry Mamma’, ‘Top Secret’, ‘Flying Horse’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’, ‘Anhad’, ‘King Lear’ and others. He is the founder member of Adabi Sangat, Kashmir and founder Artistic Director of the theatre group Kirdar,Delhi. He was also a founder actor-teacher of Sanskaar Rang Toli (Theatre-In –Education Co.) of NSD, of which he sooner became chief.

He is credited with conceptualising and organising NSD's first ever National Theatre Festival for children called ‘Jashne-Bachpan’, followed by another National Festival, ‘Bal Sangam’, of folk and traditional performing arts by children. Shri Khatana has worked extensively with hundreds of Schools, Institutions and NGO's to cultivate the need of theatre/drama for children at national level. He has contributed at multiple levels in devising the theatre/drama syllabus for NCERT for classes 1 to 12. He has more than thirty year's notable experience of teaching ‘Acting’and ‘Theatre/Drama in Education’.

His teaching experience spans almost 25 years and he has conducted several theatre workshops in different states of India including Sikkim, Jharkhand, Uttarkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal & Madhya Pradesh, organised by National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Academy & Kshitij Theatre Group in collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.

Formed Kshitij Theatre Group (Repertory Company) at Delhi in 1988 and is the founder member of Yuva Rang Manch, Ranchi, Jharkhand from 1981. Mr. Kumar was the Board Member of School of Performing and Visual Arts at IGNOU, New Delhi from 2012 to 2014. He has been visiting faculty of Drama Department, Ranchi University and Raja Mansingh Tomar Music & Arts University, Gwalior.

In addition, he has produced films, Serials, documentaries and educational films for Ministry of Culture & Doordarshan under the banner of Kshitij Theatre Group and Bharti Productions. He was Co-Producer of a 3 hour long film 'Kaala Heera' for Zee T. V., which was telecast in Jan. 2001 under special time slot. The film was based on Chasnala Coal Mine Disaster. Also co-produced a comedy serial of 13 episodes titled 'Gadbad Ghotala' for DD-1, was telecast in 1995.

He has received the Jharkhand State Award for Acting in the year 2016. In 2017, he was felicitated by “Sikkim Kalakar Sangh” for his immense contribution in promoting Theatre in Sikkim. He was conferred with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 2016. Recently, Mr. Kumar has also felicitated by Appreciation award by Govt. of Sikkim on the occasion of Republic Day 2021.

Presently, he is the Centre Director at National School of Drama, Sikkim, Gangtok.

Admission Related MattersApplication Process

In the year 2021, twenty-two students will be selected for the one-year certificate course (full-time) in dramatic arts. In view of the present situation due to COVID-19 in the country, this year the course may start from September/October 2021.

Applicants can only apply online. Application form can be filled and submitted online along with necessary documents such as graduation certificate, birth certificate, caste certificate (creamy/non-creamy layer for OBC), address proof, letter of recommendation, experience certificate (if any) and recent passport size photograph on the link available on NSD Sikkim website http://www.sikkim.nsd.gov.in. Application fee of Rs.50/- is to be paid online through Net Banking, Credit Card or Debit Card.

Applicants who applied last year in 2020 for the academic year 2020-21 and short-listed may need NOT TO APPLY AGAIN. List of short-listed candidates may be viewed on the website www.sikkim.nsd.gov.in.

Selection Process

The selection is a two phase process. Due to the prevailing critical pandemic circumstances in the country, it has been decided to conduct online admission-cum-interview to above course for the 2021 batch. An Expert Committee constituted by NSD will assess the aptitude and talent of the candidates and its decision will be FINAL and binding on all the candidates.Selected Candidates may be required to produce original documents/certificates as and when asked by the competent authority.

NSD reserves the right to start the classes/ courses in online mode, if the situation does not become normal due to pandemic in the country as per instructions of the Government of India and it will be mandatory for the selected students to attend online classes/courses as planned by NSD authority as per syllabus as and when necessary. InsuranceSelected candidates are covered by a Risk Cover Insurance Policy and are required to pay the premium amount of Rs. 230/- per annum. The Centre does not take any other responsibility beyond this insurance coverage.

Working HoursClasses are normally held from 7 am to 6 pm with usual breaks of tea and lunch. Rehearsals and other practical works will continue in the evenings till such times as required and also on holidays depending on the case. In case of online classes, the timing will be intimated to the students through e-mail.

VacationsThere will be a month long holiday in the academics.

Study TourA month long study tour organised every year to learn Indian Traditional/Folk forms in different places of the country.

Boarding & LodgingWe provide accommodation for both girls and boys. Accommodation provided to the students may be on a room-sharing basis which is mandatory. Due to pandemic situation, no hostel facility will be provided to the students during the period of online classes as hostels are required to remain vacant as per Government of India instructions. 21

General InformationRulesi) Students are not allowed to enter into any arrangement

during training outside the school.

ii) Students are not allowed to seek or accept any engagement to appear in public, neither on the amateur or professional stage, nor in radio, television or films. They may not seek or accept any employment during their term of study.

iii) Students must conduct themselves properly in accordance with the rules that govern manners and appearance. Any student found guilty of unbecoming conduct may be suspended or expelled from the School.

iv) Consuming alcohol in the School premises and hostel is strictly prohibited.

v) Students are not allowed to invite visitors or friends to classes or rehearsals except with prior permission from the Centre Director.

vi) It is obligatory for the students to enact any role that they are handed. They must participate in rehearsals and perform the role in the manner required by the teachers or the director of the play.

vii) Students have to abide by the hostel, mess and library rules.

viii) Students violating rules are liable to serve disciplinary action.

Stationary, Material & EquipmentThe centre will supply students a free of charge mount board, drawing paper, poster color, make-up material, props making material & wood for class room purposes only. Any other material will have to be purchased by the students.

AssessmentStudents will be evaluated after completion of six months of the course. In this evaluation, their work, projects and participation in the classroom activity will be considered along with assessment provided by the faculties. If their evaluation is not up to the mark, students will be discontinued from the course.

Bengal University with History (Honors) in 2010. Later, he has g raduated from Nat iona l School of Drama, New Delhi in 2013 with specialization in Acting. As an actor, he has worked with well known theatre directors from India and abroad like Dr. Anuradha Kapur, Prof Robin Das, Dr. Abhilash Pillai, Prof. Tripurari Sharma, Prof. Jeffery Sichol (UK), Shri Bipin Kumar, Shri Shantanu Bose, Shri K. S. Rajendran, Ms. Hema Singh. He also travelled to China and performed at Beijing International Theatre Festival in 2010. He assisted in Repertory Company's production 'Niyam Tah Yehi Chha' directed by Prof. Kamaluddin Nilu. He has directed a play 'Identity' in Lepcha dialect. Acted in an Arunachal based movie 'My Country Land 1962' and 'Dhokbu- the keeper', a Lepcha feature film in 2017, Lhakpa has received Prag Cine Award in 2018 as best male actor for the movie 'Dhokbu- the keeper'.

Winter / Spring Theatre Festival

Inaugural Ceremony Spring Theatre Festival( SRC, New Delhi, 2019)

inter Theatre festival was initiated by NSD, WSikkim in the year 2016 in which Repertory Company stages its plays in Gangtok and other

districts of Sikkim as well as in different parts of the country. When the festival occurs in the month of January-February every year, it is called Winter Theatre Festival, however, when it is organised between the months of March-May, it is called Spring Theatre Festival. As part of the festival, the Repertory Company has presented its plays in Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi, Gyalshing, Dibrugarh and Agartala till now. NSD, Sikkim organised the Spring Theatre Festival in New Delhi in the months of April-May 2019.

The nearest Airport to Gangtok is Pakyong (PYG), East District, located nearly 35 km south of Gangtok. Taxies/ vehicles can be hired from the pre-paid Taxi counter at the Airport to reach Gangtok. The taxi takes nearly one hour to reach Gangtok. Another airport is at Bagdogra, near Siliguri (WB), which is nearly 152 km away from Gangtok. The taxi takes about 5 hours to reach Gangtok.

The nearest Railway station to Gangtok is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri (West Bengal). After arriving at NJP, one can hire taxi or take a shared jeep from the station itself or take an auto-rickshaw to go to Siliguri Bus Stand from where one can take jeep or bus operated by Sikkim National Transport (SNT).
