December 2010 Beth L. Mitchell, Executive Director

In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanuk-kah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!'-Dave Barry. Hopefully, after all of the election process we can stand, and the fall out and aftermath of the recession of the century, we can all find some time, and our sense of humor to enjoy the holiday season. Nancy Johnson presented her Laughter Seminar at our board retreat last month, and it was a great exercise and reminder that Laughter in the Workplace can be very productive! The Chamber Board of Directors met last month for a planning session and to discuss issues of importance to the business community and assign tasks for the coming year. Board members are very committed to the success of the Chamber organization, and many of them have volun-teered to making that success happen. New committees for the coming year include: By-Law Review, Chamber Technology, and Special Events committees. The Chamber’s Economic De-velopment Committee will begin meeting again in 2011, and our Legislative/Government Affairs committee will continue with its mission. Of course, our existing committees will also be in opera-tion, with plenty of work to do. Congratulations to our newly elected Board members, Betty Lollio, Maggie Sammons and Theresa Tolle (her second term). Check the new listing of board mem-bers, who will have been installed by the time you read this newsletter. We have a diverse group of business representatives working on behalf of all the Chamber members and we appreciate their time and efforts. On page 10 of this newsletter is a map of the riverfront businesses, and all of the new things hap-pening on the Indian River Lagoon, here in Sebastian. Businesses having been getting ready for our visitors, some with special renovations and sprucing up, new menus and entertainment op-portunities, new businesses opening up for season. There is plenty to see and do along the river-front, in a three mile stretch, easy walking, Indian River Drive is really coming into it’s own as a destination of choice for visitors and the community! Our very special Volunteer Lunch is booked at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. This luncheon was developed to recognize special volunteers throughout the community, who dedicate many hours towards improving our quality of life here in the Sebastian River Area. We always enjoy this lunch because the not for profit organizations select the most dedicated individuals to honor and their stories are always very interesting, and compelling. It’s a great way to celebrate the holiday sea-son by honoring people who make such a difference in the community. Heron Publishing is in town over the holidays, offering Chamber members the opportunity to be part of the business directory project. This year a new added value feature will be including in the advertising package, the Business Directory will be available online at the Chamber website, so advertisers will receive additional exposure on the internet as well as in print. It’s a great project that provides Chamber staff with a very important tool in promoting the business community throughout the year! Chamber Board & Staff wish everybody a great holiday season and look forward to a prosperous new year. Happy 2011!
