Increased productivity is today’s eagerly-sought “Holy Grail”. Whether it’s boosting personal productivity or improving productivity in the workplace, it seems that everyone agrees that many of our problems will be solved whenever we can get more accomplished. And there’s good news and bad news….

• The good news — there are four ways to be more productive.

• The bad news — three of them no longer work! Even more unfortunately, the three approaches that don’t work are the approaches that people keep trying.

1111 ———— Work harder!

The first way to be more productive is to work harder. The problem is, this only works in those situations where someone is not already working at or near 100%. Many people are already working as hard as they can, and so this approach is not an option.

2222 ———— Work longer!

The second “solution” is to work longer. This idea is based on simple math — if you’re currently working 40 hours a week, you should get a 10% increase in productivity if you work 44 hours. Sadly, this logic is flawed. Imagine doubling your work-week. Would working 80 hours a week double your productivity? Ain’t no way!

And most people are already working at their point of diminishing returns. They could work longer, but they won’t be more productive. They might even be less productive!

3333 — Work smarter!

The third approach is the Holy Grail of trainers everywhere — work smarter! “It’s not how hard you work, it’s how smart you work!” they purport. And so we flock to seminars on a huge variety of topics — time management, priority management, management management, and more. But here’s the problem with this 3rd approach:

After all these years of training and attending seminars and workshops, many of us are already about as smart as we’re going to be!

44444444 — Be more creative!

The fourth way to get more accomplished is to be more creative. The greatest advances occurring right now are not the result of working “better”, but of seeing opportunities that other people could have seen… but didn’t. There’s good news and bad news. The bad news is… most of us are reaching (or have already surpassed) our other maximums. The good news is… most people have barely begun to scratch the surface of our creative genius.

Creative Leadership

The most effective leaders know what the rules are… and then they break them!

Productivity Through Creativity

Artists and entertainers aren’t the only ones who need to be more creative. Salespeople, corporate executives, small business owners, and many other people from all walks of life benefit from learning to tap their unknown creative powers.

Nurturing the Spirit of Entrepreneurism

The 1900’s was the century of the assembly line (or its corporate equivalent, the little grey cubicle). “Do what you’re told, and don’t make waves” was sound advice back then, but now businesses are discovering that success comes from stoking the flame of entrepreneurism in its employees.
