have the same address. They were bothmarried recently and .happened to getapartments in the same building. "Brig"married Charlotte Bacon, who was wellknown to many Illinois men. We wishworlds of happiness to both couples.

The biggest thing at Illinois duringOctober was Homecoming. This earit was especially impressive because ofthe dedication of the Memorial Stadium.Approximately 40 odd Anthemios menand about half the Iktinos chapter werein the 67,000 who saw "Red" Grangegambol at will against Michigan. Ourguests were entertained with a pledgestunt Saturday evening.

Our greatest joy and surprise was thewinning of the first prize cup for thebest decorated fraternity house, a cupfor originality, and the Kiwanis' cup forthe best house. We hoped for a cup,but hardly expected three.

Our first social function of the yearwill be November 22, a dance in honorof the Demetrios men who attend theOhio State game. We hope for as bigan attendance as at the studio party twoyears ago. Any Arochi man withinradio' distance is welcome.

I t pays to advertise. Pledge Brother~1arvin Patterson has been nicknamedI Rurr" Patterson. . Fraternity jewelers, plea e note. .

Dancing started at fiveo'clock and continued until seven, lightrefreshments were served betweendances. The house decorations whichwere under the supervision of BrotherFlegal were appropriate.

Athletic activities of Mnesicles areprogressing nicely. In bowling we havewon two matches so far, piling up ascore of 2698 in· the second match. Ourchances for the championship seem verybright. The golf team has lost onlyone match thus far, but the presentweather conditions are liable to prevent further competition. The tennisteam won its first game, but went downto defeat in a couple of latter matchesafter a hard fight. At present there arethree men out for the varsity basketball squad.

The pledges will be entertained at aparty on the eveni ng of Nov. 22; this·will be one of a series of events leadingup to initiation. Hell week will beginDec. 1, and probably last through"oriental night," Thursday, Dec 4. Iniation comes Saturday, Dec. 6th.

The chapter was honored not longago with ago with a visit from Lieut.Raymond C. Lane, '24, Paeonios. Atpresent he is stationed at Fort Snelling. We were very glad to have him withus and hope to see him again.

I t has been reported. that anotherbrother has ·Jallen victim to the charmsof a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.Miss Ethelwyn Sutton is wearing anA P X pin belonging to Robert Gullette, but so far Bob has not passed thecigars. Both live in 11inneapolis.

Oh, yes, the date, Richard McGee, Jr.,was born August 26th. '

Mnesicles chapter is now suppliedwith a complete set of ritual costumel,a different costume· for every part.H ~rbert Jennings, who last year was anactive, but now at University of Pennsylvania, spent a great deal of time andeffort searching for the colors and designs of the costumes. After he hadcollected the necessary data his motherset to work making the costumes. Thechapter appreciates very much the wo-rkthat Mrs. Jennings and Herb put in onthe costumes which will be a great helpin future initiations.

AT MICHIGANWhile the matters known now to be

on the slate for' consideration at theTenth f\nnual Convention do not appearto be as nunlerous as those which can1ebefore the l\!linneapolis convention, theyare important and mdch depends uponthe proper and equitable solution.Among other things the Ann Arborlueet in January will have to squarelyface the luatter Oof where future conventions are to be· held.

Delegates' expenses and consequentlyeach chapter's share jumped at the lastconvention even though, the Andronicuschapter wisely sent but one man. rrheexpenses this year promise to be greater, unless each delegate is exceedinglycareful of expenses, due to the two longjunlps from 'l'exas and California. 'I'heother chapters are within easy range ofj\nn Arb-or by comparison.

When the Michigan invitation wasaccepted last convention the corpmittecwent on record as favoring Kallikratesfor the 1926 convention. Again the longdistance jumps will be involved. If therule' of rotation is followed the nextconvention would go to A,ndronicus andthen Paeonios. The jump to the Pacificwould be the most expensive for allchapters regardless of the number ordelegates.

Between now and the next conventioneach chapter should cOl1s:der the problem. There is no doubt as to the expense and there is no question of thesincerity and hospitality of the Virginians and Californians. THE ARCHIhas no answer for the riddle. The matter must be considered fairly andsquarely by the convention, but beforethat the chapters and their delegatesmust canvass the situation in the different chapter meetings.

THE PLEDGE, REXAt the present time in practically

every chapter His Royal Highness, ThePledge, is King. But-it will not belong until, the king will be pulled downfrom his throne and divest'ed of hisroyal robes. He will be the slave, yea,the varlet, of the ·active members. Why?Because each pledge must prove thathe 'is a good sport, a fine fellow who isnot too fine, a rnan who isa nlan.

During Hell week, the pledge \villbeobliged, as was every active man beforehim, to subluit to certain disciplinewhich will show him up for the sort ofchap he really is, a good fellow or 'onewith a yellow streak even though it lllaybe 'a pale yellow. It IS the man whodOles what is expected of him with goodspirit 'and a proper degree of enthusiaSll1 who will get the most out of it.

UNIFIED SPIRIT

Like all chapters the Mnesicles ~c

tives faced a .problem this f.all and apparently solved it. I t was the problemof men stalling in paying their bills.''The chapter unanimously ruled that anydIan thirty days in arrears with his billautomatically suspends himself. He' isrequired to give a bankable note withhis badge as collateral.

I t is significant that the acitves tookthe step they did. On the oppositepage we publish in full a letter from aMnesicles alumnus, which is indicativeof the spirit of the alumni in generalon the n1atter. Other chapters having:the' problen1 will also find their alumnibehind them.

TO ALL CHAPTERSArrangements have been made where

by the words "Honorary Member" nlaybe placed on the regular membershipcertificates for menlbers 0.£ that class. In ordering certificates for honorarymembers the usual form should be used, but the notation "Honorary Member"should follow the name of the menlberon the order.

The Grand C·o-uncil wishes 'to call theattention of the Chapters to ArticleVIII, Section 1 (e) of the Constitutionwhich provides that names of prospective honorary nlembers must first beapproved by the Grand Council beforethey can. be elected to hono-rary membership.

I t is therefore necessarv before extending membership to pro~spective honorary members that their names and ashort description of the men and theirattainl11ents be furnished to the W. HAMMET1T WRITES OF HISTRIP IN THE FAR EAST

Mnesicles Charter Man WinnerHarvard Fellowship.

October 5, 1924.A P X-tune in:

This is station Ii - A - M speaking,Hongkong, China, Ralph W. Hammett,'19, br'oadcasting. I am now travelingand studying abroad on the Nelson,Robinson, Jr., Travelling Fellowship inArchi tecture from Harvard, and amhaving a wonderful time.

I sailed from Seattle, August 27th, andthus far have ken in Japan, Manila andnow in south China. I spent over aweek in Japan, which of course was notenough, though okey as far as an architect is concerned. I like it. Japan is averitable garden, and I believe the J apanese are unconsciously the hindscapeartists of the world.

For architecture of course I foundvery little that would be applicable inAmerica; but in art goods, sculpture, etc., they have a remarkable skill andbeautiful imagination. IThey are a veryartistic people, in their dress, theirhomes, gardens, markets, everywherethere is color, proportion and yes, art.

War in China BarsI n manners, of course, they are noted

for their politeness, and if they bearany resentment towards Americans forthe Exclusion Act, I did' not see it.Believe me,' however, my quick observation was that the law must never bechanged-the coolies, their morals andstandards of living will never allowthem to become Americans.

Because of the war in China I wasunable to visit North China. I spentone day in Shanghai and then on tolVIanila. I wanted to go to Peking, butit is not possible at this time. (Bro.Walter .A... Taylor, '21, Demetrios, is inWuchang, near Peking, 'as a missionaryarchitect. )

Anyway, Manila! It is a beautifulcity, especially "Intramura," the oldSpanish walled city. There I saw somany old Spanish churches and monastaries, arnong them St. Augustine (ISi8),realize the date, built before the Pilgrim fathers landed at' Plymouth. Also, the old University is the oldest underthe American flag, as it is thirty yearsolder than Harvard.

Ham Steps Out?C'h yes, also, I saw an old girl of

mine, "Peggy O'Neill," a girl teachingin Manila and who certainly lives up toher name and the song in every respect.Yes, I had a good time in Manila.

Then I came to Hongkong, where Ishall be for a ,veek, including two daysat Canton. Hongkong is quite a modern English city, while Canton is oneof the oldest cities in China. I shallnext go to India, via Singapore, andthence to Egypt, Palestine, Constanti-

nople, Greece and Italy.About November 20th I shall arrive

at the American Academy in Rome, where I shall stay until April beforeseeing England, France and Spain during the next year. I am passing thruthe Orient very quickly, foHawing thepath of Architectural development, asyou can see, t<;> concentrate on Europe.

And now good 'luck, Alpha Rho Chi,in the coming year, especially Mnesicles.Good luck and the hope that your newpolicy of "every man pay his bills" wiUput the chapter on its feet. Not, understand me, that I have been given tounderstand that the chapter as a wholehas been off its feet; but that therehave been more men taken in duringthe last few years who have not paidall their bills. l\tfen who should neverhave been made brothers-perhaps-atleast who-not making good shouldnever have been allowed to remainbrothers. They' have taken tHat whichthey have never paid for:-we should belenient, but they should also be honest.(If this truth hurts, brothers, I'm sorry, but hope it may help to rectify awrong). A P X is not a charitable organization.

Now again, good luck, high scholarship, top all in the interfraternity competitions and a new house next year.

all the men paid for life when the chapter was established.

I t was the Anthemios chapter, thrutheir official delegates at the Mit;lneapolis convention, that at first vigorouslyopposed the idea of the life subscription plan.

But-when the details of the plan\vere explained to the Illinois delegates, they immediately 'championed the plan, and their reversal of position, their enthusiasm for the idea, carried the convention.

And now, it is the Michigan activechapter that is the first to be 100 per-

5

cent subscribed and without any specialeffort on the part of the staff of THEARCHI. The' men from Illinois arealos real business men.

There are now on the books the lifes'ubscriptions of 11 Anthemios actives, and 11 new pledges have plade a partial payment on a life subscription. ,-Annual subscriptions came from eightother men, but they are be~ng ~rgedto

see the wisdom of paying the' balance'~saving money in the long. rU,n and beingfree forever from further petty annoy-ance by one business act. .

QUICK RESPONSE TO DATEWINS DELINQENTS CHANC:E:

Although The Archi Board in sendingout a notice the last of October declared that none but subscribers wouldreceive this, the fall directory issue, therapid response received in reply to thechallenge and the general spirit of themessages accompanying checks hasbrought about an extention in time.l\tIen who have put off thus far are givenanother chance.

Because of the fact that many perhaps may not have the immediate totalsum to pay their whole life subscriptiontwo partial payment plans are revealedin this issue which should bring aboutcomplete support from the men whohave not yet been heard from. Theseplans put THE ARCHI within thereach of every man in the fraternityNOW.

At \ the deadline there were 129 lifesubscriptions on record and, 38 partialpayments, a gain of 73 men in threeweeks. Anthemios lead the list with 47life and partial subscribers', including 11from pledges. Mnesiclcs was secondwith a 38 total, Jktinos third with 33,then Polyklitos vvith 18 (100 per centpaid at installation), Andronicus 13,Paeonios 10 and Demetrios seven, whileKallikrates and Dinocrates tied for lastplace with no subscriptions of any kind.

THE.ARCHI

Business StrokeFor Busy Men

T HE Life Subscription plan is a' success! Not that we .had any doubt about it. The fact that every initiate 1;>ecomes a

Life ,Subscriber the day he takes the oath is sufficient in itself to guarantee the

plan a prosperous developn1ent.

But more than the money is the interest of the members in "the little news

paper" and in the fraternity. 'That interest has been splendidly displayed by the

response of alumni to the first letter informing them of the opportunity to obtain

THE ARCHI for life for $10.

Forty per cent of those addressed on 'the test list sent in their checks within

ten days. Checks are still coming in from Illinois, Washington, Kansas, Ohio,

Michigan, and every place where the Alpha Rho Chi pennon has been unfurled.

Alpha Rho Chis have ever been kno,vn as shrewd business men. As such they

recognize the value of THE'ARCHI at a price 'which under the old wasteful and

infficient plan, they paid in five years alone. But Alpha Rho Chis are also busy

business men. And they have ,velcomed the plan which relieves them of petty

solicitation and the annoyance /of annual dunning letters for a few pennies in

support of the fraternity's "little ne,vspaper."

The lVlinneapolis Convention will go down in history as one of the most con

structive meetings ever held by Alpha Rho Chi. But its place in fraternity history

would be made secure alone by its adoption of the Life Subscription plan.

Your name may be added to the list of Life Subscribers by signing the form

folded. within this issue of THE i\RCHI of Alpha Rho Chi.
