Design is a process of discovery. It is a process that is emotional and intuitive. Ideas cannot be taught; they have to be experienced. This is where I strive to find myself as a designer. My process is based on an internal passion deep within my soul that drives me forward in the struggle to continue discovering the world in new ways. My responsibility as a designer is to learn to express these internal emotions in physical ways that provide others with the opportunity to experience life in a fresh way.

I believe that design is an opportunity to ask the questions and explore the ideas that allows us to make changes in the world by connecting people to people and people to places in a sincere way.

In order to achieve this goal you must become a master of the tools available to you. Developing a clear understanding of the principles of design and how to manipulate them to engage your audience and achieve the desired effect is the foundation of this process. By controlling scale, form, light, color, and texture designers can transform a space and expose valuable information and experiences to the audience.

In addition to mastering these skills it is also critical to have an open and clear view of the world around us. Design is a response to society and the challenges that we face as a community. By being aware and attuned to our surroundings we are able to use our intuitive nature to expand and contract with the pulse of the world, or at times to be the momentum behind the force of change when we feel it necessary. By being a part of that community, and not only an observer, we represent what is truly valuable about design, the opportunity to impact change in people’s lives.

The Gettysburg HotelGettysburg, PA

The Gettysburg Hotel has a tradition of hospitality that dates to 1797, when James Scott first opened his tavern at 1 Lincoln Square - the heart of downtown Gettysburg. “The New American Traditional” design style serves to link the property to its historic roots, while at the same time projecting this 119 room boutique hotel into the competitive, modern market.

Key renovation changes were developed with a focus on the operational considerations of the hotel; by opening up the lobby, there is increased interaction between the guest and the reception and lounge experience. Function drives many of the architectural changes throughout the property, ensuring that the space is able to support the ideal guest experience for the future. The public spaces offer a nod to Gettysburg College, the new owners, by utilizing the school colors and integrating historical images of the campus throughout the space.

Snag-A-Job HeadquartersRichmond, VA

Located in Richmond’s Innsbrook office park, this project renovated an existing space totaling 65,000 square feet. The scope of work included interior architecture and design, space planning, features, furniture, and fixtures. Aiming to capture Snagajob’s “work hard, play hard” mentality, Baskervill designers developed an open and collaborative space, with few private offices, to evoke a community-based working environment. Natural light, and materials such as concrete, wood, and metal, serve as a canvas for custom furniture, bright splashes of color, and employee artwork.

The space includes a “town center” replete with a bleacher-filled community gathering space, full-service kitchen, and cafeteria. The show-stopper is the stainless steel slide, reminiscent of a childhood playground, which provides quick transport for employees between the space’s two floors.

Wyndham Grand Bonnet CreekOrlando, FL

The Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort, Bonnet Creek is a 350,000-square-foot, multi-building hotel and timeshare resort situated around a ten-acre body of water in Orlando, Florida. The four-and-a-half star flagship Wyndham hotel and spa on the resort grounds includes a 400-room hotel, full-service restaurants, 43,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, and a 25,000-square-foot luxury spa and health club.

The design inspiration is loosely based on the legend of Juan Ponce De Leon’s quest for the Fountain of Youth. To incorporate the adventurous feel of the explorer’s voyage while creating an upscale resort, elements of modern materials were intermingled with the traditional Spanish-Mediterranean architecture of the building’s interior and exterior. The design challenge was to keep the story fresh and clear to the guests, while offering modern-day luxuries and creating a multi-layered aesthetic experience.

Buz & Ned’s BBQRichmond, VA

This restaurant was designed for a local BBQ chef who gained notoriety when he beat Chef Bobby Flay on the TV show "Throwdown!". Buz’s local charm was the primary focus as we developed an expansion plan that risked losing the home-grown feel of the restaurant’s original location.

The renovation of an 8,000 sq. ft. existing restaurant required creative use of reclaimed materials found around local farms and factories. By introducing elements such as rusted metal siding and worn wood planks, we were able to create a sense of authenticity for the customer.

The exterior experience was an important challenge for the team. The location on the property provides a view from the intersection of two major streets. By creating an ‘outdoor kitchen’ for the BBQ cookers we were able to engage the interest of commuter traffic. Once inside, the space offers everything from a retail store, a bar with a shooting gallery, and a private dining room.

SpringHill Suites Tech CenterAlexandria, VA

Baskervill teamed up with Davis, Carter, Scott Design to provide the Interior Design services for a new build SpringHill Suites in Alexandria, VA. The location, considered part of the Tech Center development incorporated a unique site with a 2 story atrium entrance that provided unique opportunities for space planning and design within the Marriott prototypical standards.

The ownership group, Apple REIT enlisted the team to develop a custom FF&E package for the guest rooms and public spaces that offered guests an exclusive experience while still maintaining the core essence of the SpringHill Suite Brand. Elements throughout the space were developed with great care, such as the custom guest room art developed with an artist from the West Coast who was commissioned to create hand-painted imaged for each room. The result lead to a positive response from the SHS Brand Team and certain elements were integrated into the future prototype.

Renaissance HotelPortsmouth, VA

The renovation of this property was a part of Renaissance’s campaign to update the visual style associated with its hotels. Transforming the traditional lobby from a series of dark, somber lounge areas to a bright, activated space required creative space planning.

By removing walls and engaging the guests from the moment they enter the lobby, we were able to create zones that provide opportunities for the guests to work and play throughout the day.

We used nautical inspiration throughout the hotel, combining colors, patterns, and textures that reflected the local vernacular of the Portsmouth area.

The design includes a series of custom elements, including modular lounge seating, lighting, communal tables, and carpets. Each element was developed from initial concept to completion with the selected manufacturer.

07Distance Learning EnvironmentVirginia

For my graduate thesis I partnered with the Commonwealth of Virginia and the VCU da Vinci Center to develop an interior system that addressed the under utilized spaces in existing higher education schools directed towards distance learning.

The goal of the project was to understand the development of thetraditional classroom environment in order to assess changes that could be made to the space so as to accommodate the needs of a new learning environment.

Efficiency and effectiveness were the key concepts when developing this new program. The final result was a system of expandable/collapsible screens that allow distance learning spaces to be reconfigured on a continual basis throughout the day to provide varying degrees of privacy and scale.

TargetGraphic Display Solutions

The Target mission promises to make their stores the “preferred shopping destination” for their guests by offering “continuous innovation.” When they approached our firm to work on a creative brainstorming session for their visual merchandising team, we were thrilled to be considered for the challenge.

A three week design charrette was directed at offering cost-effective solutions for graphic displays that were compatible with their existing store fixtures. I directed our design team in exploring ways to turn flat graphics into 3-dimensional sculptures that would bring the brands famous advertising to like in the stores.

The final presentation included models and renderings showing a series of solutions based on die-cut printed panels and tubes that would ship flat and assemble on-site to be attached to the existing slat-wall style display fixtures in their stores.

The designs were further developed by the in-house design team at Target and have inspired a generation of visual promotions that literally ‘jump’ off of the wall.

Juicy Couture BoutiqueBloomingdale’s, NYC

The In-store Juicy Couture boutique at Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street in NYC has one of the highest foot traffic records in the nation. The original design of the space was subtle and sophisticated but did not attract the customers’ attention in this massive retail center.

Our design team was challenged with transforming this oversaturated space so as to focus the customers’ attention on the brand immediately upon entering the store. Through the use of simple graphic surface treatments, a custom 10 foot neon light box, and custom display fixtures we were able to increase the visual statement of the boutique.

The fixtures were manufactured locally in Brooklyn, NY. Working closely with the vendors we were able to achieve sophisticated details such as matching the tinted glass and powder coating to the brand colors.Every detail, down to the candy-filled jars used throughout the store, was included in the design and execution.

Nike A-Series Fixture SystemNational Program

Designing a fixture system for Nike is like designing a museum; the focus is the product. You are creating a stage for that product and the supporting marketing that goes with it.

This line of fixtures was developed to address the urban fashion footwear market for Nike and was based on the concept of an urban landscape. The modular system builds a ‘Nike landscape’, scalable to a 500-5,000 sq. ft. space.

Careful consideration and planning went into the development of each fixture in the program. The goal was to directly relate each fixture to the product and marketing that it would carry.

In-depth material exploration and prototyping led to the final creation of a 20 part system for Nike retailers nationwide. By creating 3-D renderings and other visualization tools we were able to market the system to the merchants prior to production.

AspreyVisual Merchandising Consultant

When Asprey opened their flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York City my company was hired as the design consultants for all in-store visual merchandising. I worked directly with the director of store planning to develop the design concepts, oversaw local production, and manage installations for the twelve prominent street level windows.

With the success of the first year of visual merchandising campaigns in New York, we were asked to expand to the London flagship as well. We established contact with a local manufacturer and directed their seasonal window displays, providing consistency for the brand.

In addition to the window displays, I worked with the Asprey team to develop a line of counter-top and in-case display fixtures for their luxury watches, jewelry, and gift items. The hand-crafted props were produced in mahogany, polished nickel, and dupioni silk. The design, craftsmanship and attention to detail reflected the quality associated with the Asprey brand.
