ABOUT JEWISHFAMILY SERVICECover Image-JFS supporter Todd Morgan with his daughter Tammy Rater, and his grandchildren (from left), Billy, Charlie and Emily pictured in his Los Angeles home.

In 1854, Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) was the first charity to be established in the city. Today, 160 years later, we are proud to offer “a family of services” to more than 100,000 individuals every year.

Through our programs and services, we strive to meet the trials of poverty, hunger, domestic violence, substance abuse, families in crisis, disabilities, and aging with dignity. This compassion grows out of deep roots in Jewish values—“tikkun olam,” or healing the world, is a central tenet of Judaism.

JFS welcomes and serves people of all ages, ethnicities, and religions. Our professional staff and dedicated volunteers share a passionate commitment to enriching and improving the lives of every member of our community. 01

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENTAND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

TERRY B. FRIEDMANBOARD PRESIDENT

PAUL S. CASTRO, JD CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

On the cusp of reaching our 160th anniversary, Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) continues to provide a safety net for those who are vulnerable and at risk in our community. What drove us in the 1800’s -- a commitment to serve all based on need and not on background -- remains true today. The programs and services provided by JFS evolve to respond to changing needs, all while remaining true to our founding vision: serving the most vulnerable residents of Los Angeles.

This past year, the passionate volunteers and dedicated staff of JFS provided services and support, and also gave dignity and hope to more than 100,000 persons of all ages and backgrounds. Each of these clients is someone in need - in need of shelter, counseling, food, or respite care. JFS takes a holistic view of the circumstances of each person who walks into a JFS facility. As the needs of our clients have become more complex, so too has our integrated approach to providing comprehensive social services.

Jewish Family Service is able to meet these needs through our network of senior centers, shelters for survivors of domestic violence, food and community resource centers, and other programs. Yet helping people regain their independence and self-sufficiency is challenging as government funding and other resources continue to shrink.

As just one example of these challenges, for the ever-increasing number of older adults experiencing difficulties meeting basic needs, JFS provides 1,000 meals a day to frail, house-bound elders and through group meals in dining centers across Los Angeles. These critical meals provide sustenance for the body and for the soul, providing a critical link to resources, as well as companionship for seniors who might otherwise be isolated and go hungry. Yet federal funding crises put these hunger programs at severe risk, so JFS advocates on behalf of our clients with local, state and federal representatives to ensure their needs are met.

JFS remains steadfast in its commitment to provide a safety net for children and adults, singles and seniors. We are deeply grateful to the board members, volunteers, staff, donors and friends of JFS who enable us to make a tangible difference in people’s lives each day.

And, if you or someone you know need our help, please call or visit JFS. We’ve responded since 1854, and it’s something we’ll continue to do in the years ahead.

INTRODUCTION

At JFS, we are volunteers, partners, donors and friends who all believe in one thing – we can change things - and we’re going to do it as a family. This is the heart of JFS: people touching people, reaching out to nurture lives filled with dignity, meaning and joy. We are proud that 2014 marks our 160th year of serviceto the Los Angeles community.

Throughout this report, which we have entitled “Celebrating 160 Years of Service,” we have included images of some of our most dedicated family members. We asked those we photographed to provide a short note about what they find to be the most meaningful about their involvement with JFS. We hope you will be as inspired by their words as we are.

JFS offers our sincere thanks to our most generous supporters whose names are listed in the pages of this report. This is a list of financial donations only, made between July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013. These listings do not include gifts to our Capital and Endowment Campaign. Every effort has been made to ensure proper recognition; we apologize for any errors.

We would also like to gratefully acknowledge the thousands of individuals who have given gifts up to $500, donors of goods and services, those who wish to remain anonymous, those who give of their time, and others who support our work whose names do not appear in this report. In addition, we would like to thank our very talented artist-friends, Craig Holden Feinberg and Stefano Galli, for helping us produce this piece. Please read about their award-winning work in their bios at the end of this report.

CEOs – PAST AND PRESENT“During my 16 years as CEO of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (1975-1991), I appreciated the many and varied contributions made by our dedicated staff. The partnership of staff with the board of directors enabled the agency to offer a vast array of programs and services, thus enhancing the ability of families to cope with the complexities of everyday life. JFS fulfilled its mission of serving the Jewish people while its services were available to the entire community. I was honored to serve as the professional leader of this outstanding organization.”

-ARNOLD SALTZMAN

“While my tenure at JFS has been marked by continuous and unrelenting change, it has been my privilege to lead JFS through these uncertain times. Over the span of our 160 year history our Agency’s strength has been its ability to embrace the evolution change brings for the betterment of those who come to us in need. As I look to the future, I am comforted that our mission is clear and the commitment of our leadership, staff and volunteers, to repair our community and the world, is untiring.”

-PAUL S. CASTRO

“Thoughts on my years at JFS (1975-2000) - It was a time of incredible optimism…of belief that people could be helped and that problems could be solved. There was the excitement and joy of working with so many committed, creative and talented board, staff and volunteers during a period when we felt so much was possible. We were able to develop new and expanded services, which not only greatly benefited our community, but also created nationally recognized models of care and standards of excellence. For those of us who’ve participated, I believe our true reward is the knowledge that we helped JFS to make a significant difference in the lives of so many over those years…and that the years ahead are certain to be filled with future JFS accomplishment as well.I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be a part of it.”

-SANDY KING

I feel privileged to assist JFS in giving these elderly survivors a place to go to where they can get assistance and have a positive and uplifting experience.”

“The most meaningful work by JFS has been the care given to the Holocaust survivors. No one would care for these scared and lonely survivors who have no brothers, sisters or family to turn to. Many lost their entire family in the Holocaust.

“JFS plays a crucial role in keeping the fabric of Los Angeles’ safety net intact - meeting the needs of our community’s most vulnerable in very caring, skillful and resourceful ways. We are the outspoken advocates for those without a voice. I would love for there to be no need for JFS’ services 160 years from now, but I rest easier knowing that JFS will continue to come through for our community in all the ways that are most critical at the time. That’s what JFS does - all day, every day.”

“The world depends on three things, on [study and practice of] torah, on worship, and on acts of loving kindness” (ETHICS OF THE FATHERS 1:2). The work of Jewish Family Service is “The Practice of Torah” and “Acts of Loving Kindness” in their purest forms. I am exceedingly proud to be counted among the many members of the board, staff, volunteers, and donors who enable us all to fulfill the promise of the Jewish tradition in concrete acts of love and caring each and every day.”

Gradually, Galli’s work moved from motion pictures to still images. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Galli has shot portraits for magazines such

With his extensive background in graphic design and the acclaim he has garnered internationally, he felt it was the ideal time to start Begson and focus on projects that he felt passionate about.

Through infusing his signature modern aesthetic and creating visuals that encourage its audience to do a double take, Begson has been able to provide its diverse clientele with innovative designs.
