Jennifer Griffin & Greg Myre This Burning Land: Lessons from the Front Lines of the Transformed Israeli-Palestinian ConflictGreg Myre, former NY Times correspondent and Senior Editor for National Public Radio and his wife, Jennifer Griffin, national security correspondent for Fox News, lived in Israel for a decade covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their insightful book has been critically reviewed as “a stunning piece of non-fiction about the tortured and

heartbreaking stalemate in the Middle East.” These authors, who witnessed first hand the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the rise of Hamas, the Israeli-Hezbollah war of 2006 and the Palestinian suicide bombers, have reported on every major event in the Middle East. Their book offers new ways of perceiving this hotbed of angst from the point of view of the soldiers, politicians, settlers, farmers, doctors and laborers who live there.

AN ARTICLE OF HOPETuesday, November 1, 7pm Lafayette TheaterGuest Speaker: Joseph LennoxSponsored by Rockland Jewish Federation Reporter, Jewish Federation of Rockland County, and Town of Ramapo, Christopher P. St. Lawrence, Supervisor

On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia descended towards Earth with seven astronauts on board: six Americans and Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut. AN ARTICLE OF HOPE tells the story of Ilan’s promise to a friend and colleague, a promise tied to a third story: the story of a special Torah scroll from the Holocaust that Ilan took into space. The larger meaning in the story involves universal themes: courage, leadership, promises, and unwavering hope, and is relevant to people of all backgrounds and faiths.

CHAGALL ART LECTURE Monday, November 7, 1pmYou know about the Chagall windows but what else do you know about Marc Chagall? For more than 70 years, Chagall created artworks that reflected the time and place where he lived; his early life in Russia; with avant-garde artists in pre-WW I Paris; an interim stay in Russia during the revolution; again in Paris and then to America during WW II. Returning to France, many commissions gave him the chance to work in stained glass, mosaics, and etching.

Since 1991, Irene Wisoff has been a lecturer with the education department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ms. Wisoff holds graduate degrees in Fine Arts Education and Art History from Columbia University. Ms. Wisoff will speak about Chagall, his life, his loves and his art. Come learn what else he accomplished in those 70 years. His unusual compositions and folklorist and religious themes continually bring praise from critics and the public.

JEWISH SOLDIERS IN BLUE & GRAYThursday, November 10, 7pm Lafayette TheaterGuest Speaker: Shalom E. LammSponsored by Denise & Adam Lipson

Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, JEWISH SOLDIERS IN BLUE & GRAY is a first-of-its-kind film that reveals the little-known struggles facing American Jews both in battle and on the home front during the nation’s deadliest war. This documentary reveals an unknown chapter in American history when allegiances during the War Between the States deeply split the Jewish community. It examines a time when approximately 10,000 Jewish soldiers fought on both sides and exposes General Ulysses Grant’s controversial decision to expel all Jews from his territory. The film also tells the stories of President Lincoln’s Jewish doctor serving as a spy in the South, and how five Union Jewish soldiers received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Narrated by Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Milius (Apocalypse Now).

AMNON’S JOURNEYSunday, November 20, 7pm AMC TheatresSponsored by Regency Banquet & Conference Center at Comfort Inn Nanuet

This moving, lyrical documentary recounts the fascinating and inspiring story of master

violin maker Amnon Weinstein. For more than a decade, Amnon’s quest was to recover violins played by Jews in the ghettos, camps and forests during the Holocaust. In his Tel-Aviv workshop, he lovingly restores these remnants of a thriving Jewish culture that was all but eradicated. Each instrument tells a unique story and in Amnon’s skilled hands new life is breathed into each, bringing forth the voices of a lost generation. AMNON’S JOURNEY features stirring musical performances by international virtuosos Maestro Shlomo Mintz, Yair Dalal and Cihat Askin, and culminates with the breathtaking gala concert in Jerusalem’s Old City on the occasion of Israel’s 60th anniversary. “Violins of Hope” featured the Philharmonic Orchestra of Istanbul, Turkey and the Symphonette Orchestra of Ra’anana, Israel playing sixteen of Amnon’s restored violins. Musical performance to follow.

Liel Leibovitz Fortunate Sons: The 120 Chinese Boys Who Came to America, Went to School, and Revolutionized an Ancient CivilizationSponsored by Fountain View at College Road

Few people know that in the 1870s, China sent a group of boys to America to learn the ways of the West, modernize

their own country and defend it from foreigners. This youthful cadre of students spent a decade in New England’s finest schools. They returned to China imbued with America’s pioneering spirit of progress and reform. Author Liel Leibovitz delved into diaries, letters and first-person accounts to weave this extraordinary tale which ultimately guided a nation to new life and change. Fortunate Sons reveals insights into China today, its struggle for economic supremacy and its relationship with the United States.

Thursday, November 3, 7:30pmThanassis Cambanis A Privilege To Die: Inside Hezbollah’s Legions and Their Endless War Against IsraelWhat is Hezbollah, and why are middle-class engineers, merchants, and nurses willing to die for this movement whose aim is to destroy Israel? Journalist and teacher of writing and foreign policy at Columbia University, Thanassis Cambanis covers the Arab world for the NY Times. He presents facts about Hezbollah, namely that it has won

two wars with Israel and that it has become the most powerful and influential movement in the Islamic world. Cambanis offers insights into this complex organization that comprises a standing army, a terrorist group, a political party and a theological movement. This book should be required reading to understand the enormous threat of Hezbollah to Israel and to the West.

Jerome Verlin Israel 3000 Years: The Jewish People’s 3000 Year Presence in PalestineIn print and on TV, Israel has been accused of being “occupiers” and “colonists” in the Middle East. Israel’s enemies use these false invectives in an attempt to delegitimize the existence of Israel. Author Jerome Verlin’s book, now in its second edition, documents that the Jewish people have continuously and consistently lived in Israel for over 3000 years. Using historical and archeological

facts as well as past observations of travelers to the Holy Land, Verlin is impassioned to prove to the world that through thousands of years when the region changed hands, Jews were the lone constant in the land of Israel. “We have to make the case to the world,” says Verlin, “or see Israel’s very existence endangered.”

Ron LiebmanJersey LawDubbed the “Jewish Sopranos,” Ron Liebman’s novel is set in New Jersey and tells the story of two ex-cops, night school criminal lawyers who have taken on representing the dregs of society. Len Rosen All Cry ChaosWhat happens when a best-selling non-fiction author who teaches writing at Harvard and whose radio essays are broadcast on NPR, decides to write a murder mystery? The result is a first-rate gem of a book, which critics have called an international thriller for smart readers. Dealing with philosophical concepts of the connectedness of all life, Interpol agent Henri Poincare pursues the killer. Yet, he is continually humbled by the mystery of creation. One reviewer stated, “What The Da Vinci Code did for symbology, All Cry Chaos does for mathematical theory.”

Joseph Braude Honored Dead: A Story of Friendship, Murder, and the Search for Truth in the Arab WorldEnter the mysterious world of Casablanca and explore Jewish-Muslim relations in this true story of murder and intrigue. Born to an Iraqi-Jewish family, author Joseph Braude studied Near Eastern Languages at Yale and Arabic and Islamic history at Princeton.
