PREPARATION FOR HIGH HOLIDAYSThe month ofTishrei is the richest month in the Jewish cal .ndnr.
It includes the most awesome days - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip] uras well as the happiest days - Sukkot and Simchat Torah.
ROSH HASHANAHRosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish year. This is the day
G-d completed His creation by creating Adam and Eve, the firsthumans. On the very first day of his creation, Adam acknowledgedG-d's Kingship over the entire universe. We, too, continue to do soevery Rosh Hashanah, as we reaffirm our commitment to followingG-d's commandments. An important Rosh Hashanah observance is thesounding of the Shofar (the ram's horn).
YOM KIPPURYom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in the
Jewish calendar, On this day G-d promises to forgive all our sins, aslong as we regret our past and resolve to do better in the future.
During this day, we refrain from work as we do on Shabbat. Inaddition, we refrain from any food or drink, washing, anointingourselves with oils or lotions, marital relations, and the wearing ofleather shoes.
SUKKOTAfter a period of seriousness and reflection during the Days of Awe,
we are ready for the joyous holiday of Sukkot. During Sukkor, 'theseason of happiness', we rejoice in the knowledge that G-d has inscribedus for a good and healthy new year.
On each day of Sukkot, except for Shabbat, we observe the specialmitzvah of shaking the Lulav (palm branch) and the Etrog (citron).Together with the Hadas (myrtle) and the Arava (willow), these plantsrepresent the various types ofJews who together form the Jewish nation.

SIMCHAT TORAHSimchat Torah marks the day we complete the reading of the Torah
in its annual cycle. On the evening of Simchat Torah (in somecommunities, on the previous evening of Shemini Atzeret as well), wemake seven Hakafot (circles) around the Bimah (table) on which theTorah is read, dancing and rejoicing with .rhe Torah scrolls.
During morning services on Simchat Torah, the Torah is officiallycompleted by reading the last Torah portion. We immediately startreading from the beginning of the Torah again, for the Torah's teachingsare endless, and we shall always seek to delve deeper and deeper into itsmeanmgs.
G-d never told us to make Simchat Torah. But on this day, werenew our endless love affair with His Holy Torah - so how could wenot celebrate? And when G-d sees us celebrating the Torah He gave us,how could He not celebrate? Even the Torah itself yearns to celebrate -so we provide it the feet to dance.
THE MONTH OF CHESHVANOut of the rwelve months in the Jewish calendar, the only one
lacking a single festive day immediately follows the High Holidayseason. As the excitement of the holidays begins to fade, ourrelationship with G-d becomes about demonstrating trust and loyalty aswe work through the daily grind of life. This is the time to discover thejoy born out of a continuous relationship with G-d.
RESPECT FOR PARENTS - A RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLEThe fact that "to honor" and "to revere" parents are Mitzvot
of the Torah, impresses upon these precepts a stamp of absoluteness andmakes of them independent principles. It no longer matters whether aparticular society may have a different standard of ethics and code ofmorality. This is the effect of the Torah's laws - to enliven the seeminglyordinary behaviors of society with a G-dly spirit.

THE MITZVAH OF TEFILLINTefillin, or phylacteries, are donned every weekday by Jewish men
and boys over the age of 13. The Torah describes Tefillin as a sign - apublic statement of Jewish involvement. By donning Tefillin daily, anindividual gives expression to his basic feeling of Jewish identity and itsimportance to him, The Tefillin are placed on the arm facing the heart, and on the head, This signifies the binding of one's emotional andintellectual powers to the service of G-d, The straps, stretching from thearm to the hand and from the head to the legs, signify the transmissionof intellectual and emotional energy to the hands and feet, symbolizingdeed and action,
THE MITZVAH OF TZITZITHOur sages refer to the precept of Tzitzith as a simple and easy
Mitzvah. But as simple and easy as it is, so rich is this Mitzvah insymbolism, and so potent in effectiveness, that it is equivalent to all theother precepts of the Torah, For surely a consistent observance of thisMitzvah ofTzitzith must lead to a proper and complete observance ofall the commandments, As the Shema states, "You shall look uponthem, and you shall remember all G-d's commandments and fulfillthem, and you will not follow after your heart and your eyes, by whichyou may go astray." Their strings and knots are a physical representationof the Torah's 613 Mitzvot. It works like this: Each letter in the Hebrewalphabet has a corresponding numerical value, The numerical values ofthe five letters that comprise the Hebrew word Tzitzith add up to 600,Add the eight strings and five knots of each tassel, and the total is 613,
When thrown into the tumultuous waters of the temptations ofeveryday life, the Tzitzith are our life-line, the rope to which we cancling to prevent us from drowning, as our Sages so graphically relatehow the sight of the Tzitzith stopped a man on the verge of committinga grave sin and helped him to regain control over his body and to restorehis spiritual equilibrium.
