Thomas Brassey Maddocks (1874-1901) was the son ofThomas Maddocks of Woodlands-in-Wem, Shropshire(b.1846) and his wife Mary Crawley, who he married in1873. The younger Thomas was born on 3 September 1874and educated at Shrewsbury School before joining first theSomersetshire Light Infantry and later the Shropshire LightInfantry, becoming Lieutenant in October 1898. He travelledwith his regiment to South Africa and was killed there duringthe re-occupation of Potchefstroom on 10 September 1900. £1000 - 1500

Following this tradition Hiroshi was togo on to complete an MA in Tokyo before moving to the London to study atCamberwell and later the Royal College of Art. Initially working in a variety ofmedia it was at the Royal College of Art that Hiroshi was to discover thefluidity that he could achieve working with silver. His work was very quickly to find a devoted following including PeregrineCavendish, 12th Duke of Devonshire who says of Hiroshi’s work ‘His vesselsare incredibly tactile. The beakers, for example, make you want to drink, topick the vessel up and use it. They are weighted so that the ridge and furroware perfect for your hand’, as quoted by Rachel Spence, ‘Quick Silver: TheArt of Hiroshi Suzuki’, The Financial Times, 21 September 2018. Now represented exclusively by Adrian Sassoon, the UK’s leading dealer incontemporary works of art, Hiroshi’s work has been widely exhibited and isrepresented in major private and public collections around the world.
