Food Scrap Diversion

Overview

• Organics account for up to 60 % of the weight in the traditional waste stream, and up to 30 % of the volume. The average Jewel –Osco generates in excess of 12,000 lbs per month in organic waste

• Both Evanston Jewel – Osco stores currently participate in fresh rescue programs with the Greater Chicagoland Food Depository

• An estimated 288,000 pounds of food scrap will be diverted from the landfill for the 2 Evanston stores annually, not including the food pantry donations

• Currently 162 of the 179 Jewel – Osco locations are actively diverting food scraps to composting. We started with 3 stores back on 11/7/2011, and have learned the right way to divert food scraps to composting Extensive training programs developed to implement the program and alter the store
