March 22, 2020 Sacred Heart of Glyndon Fourth Sunday of Lent

Coronavirus Update as of March 18, 2020:

Dear parishioners,

To safeguard the well-being of the faithful of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and in keeping with the order of the State of Maryland, Archbishop Lori has determined that all public Masses are cancelled until further notice. Weddings, baptisms, and funerals may proceed, but attendance is limited to the legal number of participants — 10, including the presider. Compliance with all state and local government-imposed restrictions on the number of people at public gatherings is mandatory, regardless of the type of gathering.

• All public parish activities at Sacred Heart have been cancelled until further notice, including our Pastorate Reconciliation Service that was planned for March 26.

• Pastoral visits to the sick and homebound have been suspended for the time being.

• Confessions are available by appointment only and will not be available at their usual Saturday time; please call the Parish Office at 410-833-1696 to make arrangements.

The Little Church will be open for private prayer and adoration

from 9:30 AM – 9:00 PM every day (10:00 AM – 9:00 PM on Sundays).

• Please practice “social distancing” by keeping 10 feet away from those around you in the church.

• Please use hand sanitizer (provided inside) when entering and leaving the church.

• By the order of the State of Maryland, if the group grows larger than 10 people, some people will have to leave.

Changes by the State or local authority could alter this guidance. If you cannot follow these instructions, please do not enter the church. Thank you! As we pray for you and with you virtually each morning, please know of our concern for each and every member of our parish community and beyond. If there are people who are alone, isolated, older, or sick, please let us know about them — and we can do whatever the law will allow us in order to reach out in care. This is a great time for us to update our information on those who are in nursing centers, home bound, or just in need of conversation. We are lining up a great crew of volunteers to call, text, and pray with people during this time. If you would like to join this ministry, please let us know!

The Archdiocese of Baltimore has also established a coronavirus webpage which is updated regularly — www.archbalt.org/coronavirus.

Weekly Liturgical Schedule

Masses continue to be offered each day privately by our priests — without the physical presence of the faithful — for the Sacred Heart and St. Charles Pastorate during the restriction of public Masses. Rest assured, all Mass intentions that have been offered by parishioners will be prayed for at Mass.

These Masses are “livestreamed” at 9:00 AM from Sunday – Friday and 8:00 AM on Saturdays on our parish Facebook page. Videos are posted afterward to the parish website home page and YouTube channel for those not on Facebook. We will stream Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM on Friday evenings. Please see Page 4 of this bulletin for full details and links.

Scripture Readings: March 29, 2020

Jn 11:1-45 or 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45

Jesus is our resurrection and our life (3). Because he has given us of the Spirit, we are no longer dead because of sin, but alive (1, 2). In Jesus is the fullness of redemption (Ps).

Stay Connected to Your Parish and Your Faith Due to the State order on the limitation of gatherings, we can have no scheduled “services” at Sacred Heart that would bring people together at a specific time. However, we continue to hold Masses and other services at the parish, though without the physical presence of the faithful — your presence.

To stay connected with Sacred Heart Parish and for participation at Masses, hope and spiritual nourishment, messages, and resources during this unusual time in the season of Lent, we invite you to make use of any or all of the resources below:

www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/index.cfm — Extensive Lenten resources from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

https://stations.wordonfire.org — Beautiful & powerful video reflections from Bishop Robert Barron on the Stations of the Cross, an ancient Christian devotion that draws us into the spiritual space of Jesus’ suffering and death.

Reminders — Lenten Disciplines All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat for persons 14 years and older.

“Fasting is knowing how to give up things that are vain and superfluous in order to reach the essential. Fasting is not only for losing weight. Fasting is actually going to the essential. It is seeking the beauty of a simpler life.

“Prayer, fasting, works of mercy. This is the path of the Lenten desert.”

– Pope Francis, Ash Wednesday 2020 general audience

Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting:

1. From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast.

2. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.

3. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this world.

4. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist — the truest of foods.

5. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments) — for the reception of grace.

6. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.

7. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites.

Parish Support Needed As pastor, Fr. Jerry worries about how to financially care for the parish during this unprecedented time. Even when you are not able to attend Mass you can still support the parish through your weekly offertory contributions. Please note that your weekly offering directly supports the operation of the parish and is much needed.

You can mail your offertory to the parish, drop it off at the Parish Center, or sign up for online giving at https://giving.parishsoft.com/app/Giving/sacredheart.

Thank you in advance for your continued support!

“The Cross of Christ bears the suffering and the sin of mankind, including our own. Jesus accepts all this with open arms, bearing on his shoulders our crosses and saying to us: ‘Have courage! You do not carry your cross alone! I carry it with you. I have overcome death and I have come to give you hope, to give you life’ (cf. Jn 3:16).”

– Pope Francis, WYD Way of the Cross, 7/26/2013

Dear valued casserole donors ~ The Our Daily Bread meal program will continue during the COVID-19 pandemic as we feel very strongly that we must serve those in need in Baltimore City.

We are still needing our casseroles. With the inevitable drop-off of volunteers, having a steady supply of food is essential to serving the daily meal. We hope you can maintain your incredible work, especially now. I want to ensure you that we are still taking donations and would appreciate the continued support. I’d be happy to work with you through this time; please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions or if you are able to contribute casseroles or other needed items. Called to His Supper

We, the parish children named below, will receive our First Holy Communion after Easter, and we have been preparing our minds and hearts to receive this great gift of Jesus’ life. Please pray for us and our families as we continue to learn about Jesus and prepare our souls to come to the table of the Lord.
