Duc in altum

Put out into the deep

- Luke 5:4

Dear Friend of Jesuit Retreat House,

As we celebrate the gift of the Easter season and the joy of new life

following a very cold winter, I also feel the hope and excitement of my

first spring as Executive Director at Jesuit Retreat House. One image that has stirred within

me in recent days is from the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte of Pope John Paul II at

the beginning of the new millennium. He introduced this letter with the words of Jesus from

the Gospel of Luke: “Duc in altum” – “Put out into the deep.” These words of Jesus to his

disciples, to us, resonate with a poster I have found inspiring for many years:

A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.

And so it is with the ship of our JRH mission and legacy in this time. We need to be

continually looking to bring our Ignatian mission and ministry more deeply and creatively

into the sea of God’s people throughout our community – extending the broad embrace of

evangelization. It is fitting that the theme for our Hearts on Fire annual fundraiser speaks to

Building Anew in Our Time, reflecting this same spirit of sailing into a new time, our time –

by remembering the past with gratitude, living in the present with hope and enthusiasm, and

looking forward to the future with the confidence of Jesus Christ walking with us.

I continue to be inspired by the ways in which God’s grace enters the lives we touch at JRH.

A high school student came to say farewell at the end of his Kairos retreat and noted in a

moving manner: “My eyes were opened.” A woman on a retreat shared with me: “My father

made a retreat here to discern whether he would ask to marry my mother.” A Lenten

retreatant noted: “the reflections shared were spot on for my life in this time.” A participant

on a Lay Leadership retreat wrote: “This retreat greatly deepened my desire to follow God.”

Please consider the retreats and programs we offer in both traditional and new ways to help

you “to find God in all things.” In June and July we set aside a range of times from weekends

to up to 30 days for individual directed silent retreats – a remarkable gift to oneself! And

always know that we welcome your ideas for future retreat offerings.

God be with you,

Richard S. Krivanka, Executive Director

Women Religious:

Letting God Love You

Have you ever taken the time to ask yourself “how have I experienced God’s love?” In what ways has God’s love come personally into your life: in private prayer, through scripture, in conversations with good friends, maybe even on the Internet? Do you hear God’s voice in the quiet of your heart as you walk in the beauty of creation? In difficult times, the death of a loved one, a diagnosis of a critical illness, a disappointment in ministry? These and more ways will be explored as you seek to discover God’s love for you.

Individually Directed Retreats Summer 2015

Spiritual Directors Summer 2015

Since 1898, the grounds of Jesuit Retreat House have provided spiritual peace for people looking to deepen their relationship with God. Now, perhaps more than ever, the sacred space of JRH is a vital gift to Northeast Ohio. Contemporary men and women make silent retreats for various reasons. Some are searching for a new way of knowing God that is personal and real. Others use this time to rest in the creative heart of God – to imagine new possibilities, or sit with gratitude for God’s magnificent work. Whatever your reason for making a retreat, sacred silence is a gift to the soul. Here, you will experience silence on 57 acres of woods and meadows, complete with outdoor shrines and stations of the cross to aid reflection. The 55-bedroom house provides a home away from home with three chapels, a library, and home-cooked meals.

As companions on your journey, spiritual directors offer guidance based on Ignatian Spirituality. Individually directed retreats consist of 30-day retreats, 8-day retreats, 5-day retreats, and weekend retreats.

September Programs Lay Leadership News

JRH Lay Leadership Programs … Going Places!

Yes! … our Lay Leadership Program Director, Martha Campbell, reports that JRH continues to “go places.” For example, since this past fall, we’ve been to Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, Blessed Trinity, Our Lady of the Lake, St. Barnabas, St. Clarence and St. John Neumann Parishes! Consider one of our spirituality programs for your parish. Teams of qualified lay leaders are prepared to share our programs based on The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Here is a brief synopsis of what we can offer on-site at your parish:

The Pilgrim Way of Ignatius Loyola offers a “taste of Ignatian Spirituality,” the spirituality of Pope Francis, which nurtures openness to the call of God in our lives. Some questions addressed in the program include: What happens when you encounter Christ? Is it possible to find God in all things? (4-part series, 90 minute sessions) Praying with St. Ignatius Retreat-in-Daily-Life follows the pattern set out by The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Now in its 10th year with revisions along the way, this retreat has set hearts on fire with love for Jesus Christ! (8-part series, 2 hour sessions) The Called and Sent Spiritual Formation Program, grounded in the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, nurtures spiritual deepening in individuals and communities for service of Christ’s mission in the world. This program is comprised of six modules which can be taken individually or as a series.

Ignatian Foundations introduces key aspects of Ignatian Spirituality (prayer, discernment, action for justice): 6 monthly 2-hour sessions and a day-long retreat. Encountering Jesus Christ focuses on “interior knowledge of Jesus Christ” which is experienced through Ignatian contemplation of the Gospels: 6 weekly 90 minute sessions and a day-long retreat. Discernment and Decision-Making applies practical knowledge and application of “discernment of spirits” and decision making according to the teaching of Ignatius Loyola: 6 weekly 2-hour sessions and a day-long retreat. The Christian at Work in the World is offered in two parts: A) Catholic Social Teaching and B) Work-Place Spirituality. Each part, which can be taken together or separately, consists of 3 bi-weekly 2-hour sessions and a half-day retreat. Embracing the Mystery addresses landmarks on the spiritual journey including suffering and death, redemption and grace: 3 monthly 3-hour sessions and an overnight retreat. Living Prayer Retreat-in-Daily Life centers on life in the Spirit including personal prayer, spiritual direction, liturgy and sacraments: 6 weekly 2-hour sessions.

For further information and to hear more of what people are saying about these programs, please contact a member of our leadership team: Margaret Balewski ([email protected]), Martha Campbell ([email protected]), or Claudette Matero ([email protected]).

In Loving Memory Each month we remember our benefactors with Mass. In a special way we remember our friends who have gone home to the Lord. We remember and pray for Patricia Von Benken, Richard Murphy, James M. Lavelle, Erin Ropar, Joseph J. Zgonc, Mary C. Saunders, Anthony Ioppolo Sr., Esther Baiocco and Helen Ricotta. Please let us know when you lose a loved one, and we will add them to our Mass intentions.
