Jesuit High School

The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued support

of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout the nearly 50 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition.

The advertisements in this booklet were sold by the Jesuit Boosters Club to help support the students and the programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Boosters Club, are responsible for our school’s continued development and success.

Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent, young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.

Dear JHS Fans,

Welcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your

enthusiasm and your generosity. Please accept my thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community.

Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (I like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given?

All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words but by our works. To our student-athletes, I encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches, and teachers. To our parents, coaches, and teachers, I encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, I encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stands, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are.

Our sport successes over the years have come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder and become more skillful. I welcome you and all your fans to our campus.

Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. And to our awesome JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs.

May God bless you.

GO MARAUDERS!

Dear Marauder Parents, Friends and Fans,

From the President From the Principal

5

Welcome to the 2012-2013 Marauders’ Winter Season! The young men you are cheering on train incredibly hard for countless hours under the direction of

talented and dedicated coaches. These Marauders wear their school colors with pride and work to be positive representatives of their families and Jesuit High School. It is a joy to watch our student-athletes participate and compete in the sports they love and grow in their understanding of what it means to be part of a team.

Jesuit High School has a long-standing tradition of excellence and good sportsmanship. As a supporter of our athletic program, you are an important part of that tradition.

As a Jesuit school, we strive to educate the “whole person,” and our co-curricular athletic program is an integral part of that education for the student-athletes involved in it. I encourage you to read our Athletics Mission Statement, which comes from the Jesuit Secondary Education Association’s “Athletics Mission Statement for a Jesuit School,” as it puts into context the importance of athletics in a Jesuit High School. Among other things, the statement notes, “Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.” This growth will come through individual and team victories and defeats, both big and small. The statement also reminds us that, “…the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things…” Placing God at the center of their athletic experiences will benefit our young men in immeasurable ways.

I thank you for your support today and know that, for many of you, the most important support you will give a student-athlete and his coaches will take place off the field, court or mat. I appreciate your partnership as we endeavor to make our student-athletes’ experiences the best they can be.

I would also like to thank our Director of Athletics, Mr. Chris Fahey ’92; our Assistant Director of Athletics, Mr. Ross Evans; and our Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, Mrs. Robin Cummings; and all of our coaches and volunteers for their good work. The time and energy they put into making our athletic programs top-notch experiences for our student-athletes is commendable.

God bless you and your families!

Sincerely,

Brianna K. LatkoPrincipal

From the Athletic Director

Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignation values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community.

Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God: that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his/her active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

Dear Parents, Friends and Fans of Jesuit,

Welcome to the 2012-2013 Winter Sports season for Basketball and Wrestling. Our student-athletes have been working hard at practices to meet the challenges of

their preseason schedules, and to prepare for the always competitive Delta River League that features teams from the following high schools: Jesuit, Oak Ridge, Ponderosa, Folsom, Sheldon and Pleasant Grove. I encourage all of you to enjoy this time of year and to cheer on the efforts of our young men as they represent our programs and our school throughout the season.

The Winter Sports season promises to be an exciting one for Jesuit High School fans. The Basketball team looks to re-load after graduating several key players from a team that lost in the CIF Nor Cal Finals last season. The Marauders will continue to improve throughout the season, as only Brady Anderson and Lake Lutes saw regular minutes last season, while challenging for a Delta River League championship and CIF Sac-Joaquin Section title. Jesuit Wrestling is excited about the 2012-2013 campaign, as they return almost every varsity wrestler from last year’s team, and look to strengthen team depth with over 40 wrestlers this season. Returning wrestlers; Gilbert Martinez, Anthony Wesley, Hubert Enriquez, and Kevin Winn (CIF Sac-Joaquin Section tourney qualifiers) will be joined by Nick Castilone and Brandon Dishno to help guide the Marauders through the ultra-competitive Delta River League.

I would also like to recognize the efforts and the support of the Booster Club, especially Jamila Masarweh (Volunteer Coordinator) and Rebecca Barron (Snack Bar Chair). Their coordination of volunteers to work at all of the home athletic events makes it possible for our coaches and staff to concentrate on the games. I urge all of you to be a part of this club and become involved with our school’s co-curricular programs. Furthermore, I’d like to express my gratitude for our game staff, Tim Fleming (Announcer), Mark Hilder (Scoreboard Operator) and Mike Fleming (Shot Clock Operator).

Please enjoy the 2012-2013 Winter Sports Program, which includes individual and team pictures, rosters and team profiles for each of our sports. I also urge you to read the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” pages within this program and follow the CIF’s guidelines and expectations for good sportsmanship. Jesuit High School is known for its incredible fan support, and I am proud of the manner in which we model true sportsmanship to the officials and our guests from other schools. Let us continue to display such behavior throughout the year.

On behalf of our coaches, Assistant Athletic Director Ross Evans and Administrative Assistant Athletic Director Robin Cummings, I want to thank you for your continued support of our teams, our student-athletes, and our school. We look forward to serving you this season and hope you enjoy the athletic experience at Jesuit.

Sincerely,

Chris Fahey ’92Director of Athletics

As a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory high school, we are committed to the

excellence of our broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice.

The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

After a successful run to the Division I NorCal Finals in 2011-2012, five graduating Seniors have moved on to play at the collegiate level: Bryce Pressley ’12 (University

of Portland), Parker U’u ’12 (Hartford University), Brian Glodowski ’12 (Lesley College), Kurt Parker ’12 (Lewis and Clark), and Akachi Okugo ’12 (Yuba CC). This year’s version of the Jesuit Marauders has big shoes to fill and will need to rely on the quick development of their underclassmen as they learn on the fly from a tough preseason schedule. They have high expectations and look forward to carrying the torch of tradition in Jesuit Basketball.

Lake Lutes ’14 is the only returning player with significant playing minutes last year. He now takes the lead as both a scorer and role model for first-year Varsity players, demonstrating the effort and skill needed to succeed at this level. Lutes’ ability to serve as lead go-to-guy will hopefully give the Marauders the needed firepower to compete in the tough Delta River League. Returning Seniors Andrew Hoy ’13 and Isiah King ’13 will take on a larger role of leadership and hopefully have a positive impact on the success of this team with their understanding of what it means to play hard and as a team. At 6’9”, Brady Anderson ’14 is called to anchor the middle as he learns to become more aggressive, which will complement his smooth shooting touch. Point Guard Nick Hilton ’14 has worked harder than any other player, and his growth has been noticeable. His dedication and determination, along with his overall toughness, will be a key, as he will be asked to quarterback this young group. Five Juniors, Jason Brown ’14, Von Curtis ’14, Joe Henry ’14, Kirk Langley ’14 and Josh Soriano’14, will be competing intensely to find minutes as they step up to the Varsity level. Any one of these five players can find themselves contributing at any time. Junior Varsity players Isaiah Bailey ’15, Kori Collons ’15 and Dante Henley ’15 are also hoped to contribute right away, giving us much needed depth and punch off the bench.

This group has many interesting pieces that the current staff must mold together into a cohesive unit that continually improves throughout the year and makes a push in league to earn a position in the playoffs. More important than wins and losses is that they will represent Jesuit Basketball and play hard and to the best of their ability.

New members to the program, Alex Elko ’16, Sam Collins ’16, Paul Periolat ’16, Christian Flores ’16, Patrick Maestro ’16 and transfer Cole Wilbourn ’14 bring new experience with previous success in the sport to create a competitive atmosphere in the wrestling room. Second and third-year wrestlers Nick Dalke ’15, Josh Leatherby ’15, Sam Nettles ’15, Nolan Sheehan ’15, Bailey Scott ’15, Justin Turrell ’15, Blake Xavier ’15, William Haynes ’14, Erik Medina ’14 and Matt Milligan ’14 are working hard to solidify a competitive lineup as the Wrestling Team represents the Marauders throughout northern California and the central valley.

Principles:1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”

2. It’s the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.”

3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible.

4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character.

5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators.

6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules.

7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents.

8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed.

9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical well-being of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressured to win.

10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school.

11. Everyone involved in competition including parents, spectators, associated study body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor

34

Page 37: Jesuit High School 2012-2013 Winter Sports Program

12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport.

13. Because of the powerful potential of sports as a vehicle for positive personal growth, a broad spectrum of school sports experiences should be made available to all of our diverse communities.

14. To safeguard the health of athletes and the integrity of the sport, school sports program must actively prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and performance enhancing substances, as well as a demand compliance with all laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and the use of drugs.

15. Schools that offer athletic programs must safeguard the integrity of their programs. Commercial relationships should be continually monitored to ensure against inappropriate exploitation of the school’s name or reputation. There should be no undue influence of commercial interests. In addition, sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue dependency on particular companies or sponsors.

16. The profession of coaching is a profession of teaching. In addition to teaching the mental and physical dimensions of their sport, coaches, through words and example, must also strive to build the character of their athletes by teaching them to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
