The VPLEX is a product that represents the future of data storage of the private cloud

It allows for data mobility between EMC and non-EMC platforms within, across and between data centers

Future models of the VPLEX will allow for cross-continental and global capabilities where multiple data centers can be pooled over extended distances

EMC VPLEX makes Virtual Storage a reality with its ability to federate information across multiple data centers. Virtual Storage enables new approaches for delivering IT as a flexible, efficient, and reliable service. The combination of Virtual Storage and virtual servers is a critical enabler for the journey to the private cloud.

The combination of EMC VPLEX and VMware VMotion enables you to effectively distribute applications and their data across multiple hosts over synchronous distances. With Virtual Storage and virtual servers working together over distance, your infrastructure can provide load balancing, real-time remote data access, and improved application protection.

The two VPLEX products that are currently available are local and metro and they were released yesterday

Priced at $77,000 for the on-premise solution and $26,000 for a subscription version.

Metro offers the ability to connect two VPLEX Local storage clusters across separate locations (up to 60 miles apart) while treating them like a single pool of storage

The Metro concept will be extended to the Geo and Global in 2011

EMC VPLEX Local provides: Virtual Storage federation Achieve transparent

mobility and access in a data center. Scale-out cluster architecture Start small and

grow larger with predictable service levels. Advanced data caching Improve I/O performance

and reduce storage array contention. Distributed cache coherency Automate sharing,

balancing, and failover of I/O across the cluster. Mobility Move data without impact on users. Resiliency Mirror across arrays without host

impact, and increase high availability for critical applications.

EMC VPLEX Metro provides: AccessAnywhere™ Share, access, and

relocate a single copy of data across a distance. Scale-out cluster architecture Start small and

grow larger with predictable service levels. Advanced data caching Improve I/O performance

and reduce storage array contention. Distributed cache coherency Automate sharing,

balancing, and failover of I/O across clusters. Mobility Migrate and relocate virtual machines,

applications, and data, and gain support for VMotion over distance.

Resilience Increase protection to reduce unplanned application outages between sites.

“VPLEX at it’s most fundamental is a scale-out, active/active geographically disperse, cache coherent in-band storage federation device. There, easy : - ).” –Some guy named Chad

Page 12: Jessie Wilkie 13th May EMC Vplex

Active-active means logical volume is simultaneously read/writable on all nodes

Scale it out means that more nodes can be added for more performance (VPLEX uses the same “Storage Engine” hardware as all other EMC storage devices)

Intel multi-core commodity hardware Distributed write cache coherency

With VPLEX's unique distributed federation, your data can be accessed and shared among locations over synchronous distances. The VPLEX architecture combines scale-out clustering with distributed cache coherence intelligence to enable data mobility between EMC and non-EMC platforms within, across, and between data centers.

It takes about 5 milliseconds for data to travel between two data centers that are 100km apart and connected by fiber optic cables.

Enables ‘follow the sun’ computing where workloads can be relocated to low-cost energy regions or moved out of the way of approaching storms

It solves difficult problems associated with routinely moving petabytes of data

It represents the future of private cloud computing
