JERK SENSOR
Project Requirements
Design an instrument that measures the jerking motion of the train. When the jerk limit is reached, an
alarm via SMS will be raised to the engineer. The data will be recorded and stored to assist SMRT
engineers to perform second line investigations on the raised alarm.

How it works
1) Sensor measures the acceleration of the train
2) Calculates jerk with respect to time
3) Records all data into SD Card in .csv format
4) If jerk reaches the jerk limit of ±0.75 𝑚/𝑠3,
an alarm will be raised
5) Sensor sends the alarm via SMS to the
engineer
6) SD Card can be extracted by engineer locally
for second line investigations
Project Purpose
The jerk sensor can be used as a reference to determine jerk events of trains. Train jerking denotes
train problems, thus, investigations can be done to improve the quality of the trains.

A collaboration between:
• Provides real time monitoring of train jerking
level for indicative of a developing fault
• Utilized as tool for trending and analysis to
measure passenger comfort level
Jerk
Jerk is the rate of change of acceleration.
