    Jennifer Daulat-Araujo(known as Jenny) was born inPasea Village, Tunapuna in 1957.She is the last of six children ofMr & Mrs Jagdeo Daulat (bothdeceased). Her parents werefarmers who sold their produce

    in the Tunapuna Market onSundays.

    She was diagnosed withGlaucoma from birth. As a child,she attended Tunapuna HinduPrimary School and, afterwards,St. Charles Girls' High Schoolfor three years. In 1972, shetravelled to Winnipeg, Canadato seek treatment for her eye

    condition.

    In Canada, she underwentseveral eye operations, whichproved to be unsuccessful. Withfailing sight and a strong desireto obtain a Secondary SchoolEducation, she was exposed torehabilitation training andacquired competencies inBraille, Typing, Daily Living

    Skills and Mobility andOrientation, at the CanadianNational Institute for the Blind(CNIB).

    On completion of theRehabilitation Course, sheentered an integration

    programme at a regular HighSchool (Daniel Mc IntyreCollegiate Institute) in Winnipegwhere she obtained herSecondary School Diploma.

    At age 19, now blind, sheenrolled at the University ofWinnipeg, and commencedstudies in Psychology andSociology. In 1981, shegraduated with a Bachelor ofArts Degree with a doublemajor in Psychology andSociology. She then pursuedfurther training inRehabilitation Teaching of theBlind at the Canadian National

    Institute for the Blind.

    In 1985, she returned to Trinidadand secured employment at theTrinidad and Tobago BlindWelfare Association (TTBWA).She commenced her workingcareer delivering lectures toSchools and Organizations onBlindness Awareness. Over the

    years, with addedresponsibilities, she progressedto the post of Welfare Officer.

    Through the National Council forthe Blind, she was able to securecertification of the followingcourses for the Blind and VisuallyImpaired in Trinidad and Tobago:

    National Braille Examination,

    Craft Syllabus - (Seagrass,Basketry and Chair-caning),

    Computer Literacy.

    She also piloted otherprogrammes , namely:

    Cooking for the Blind andVisually Impaired

    Vision Screening for the Public,

    Lectures on BlindnessAwareness and Displays atMalls.

    Currently, she delivers, oninvitation, Guest Lectures toOptometry Students at theUniversity of the West Indies, St.Augustine Campus.

    For her tireless and selfless effortsfor the betterment of persons whoare blind and visually impaired,Jennifer has been recognized andpresented with awards fromTrincity Lions Club and NationalCouncil of Voluntary Associationsfor Child Care.

    In 2011, during the BiennialGeneral Meeting of the CaribbeanCouncil for the Blind and TheFoundation for Eye Care in theCaribbean, held in Trinidad andTobago, she was presented with the

    James Alves OutstandingAchiever Award for 2011, inrecognition of her extra-ordinarypioneering spirit.

    From 1996 to 2009, Ms Daulat-Araujo, voluntarily and without

    financial compensation, wrote aWeekly Column "INSIGHT" in theNewsday Newspapers.

    In over 300 published articles, shehas championed the cause of theVisually and Physically-ChallengedCommunity. Many of her insightfulsuggestions and recommendationshave served to influence NationalPolicy. She is the author of two (2)

    books - Windows to the World ofthe Blind and "Braille Manual forthe Sighted".

    Both of these books are used asReference Books by OptometryStudents of the University of theWest Indies, St. Augustine Campus

    At this year s National AwardsCeremony, the Government ofTrinidad and Tobago, invested herwith the Humming Bird Medal(Silver) for her long and devotedservice which has broughtimmense benefits to persons whoare blind and visually impairedand also in creating awareness onissues of blindness.
