AMTRAKrebranding campaign

The experience of traveling with Amtrak is rooted in Americana — the bringing together of new and old, a feeling of being part of something modern, yet still nostalgic, and the freedom to connect with the landscape, cities, and people of America.

INSTRUCTORJeremy Shellhorn

CLASSIFICATIONBrandingFull Campaign “I grew up in a train town, so I’ve always

loved the idea of seeing America by train. I wanted to bring that wonder and sense of adventure back to the railroad, so that my generation and future generations can grow up with an understanding of what real traveling should be like.“

AM TRAK

BACK ON TRAK Amtrak is a portmanteau of the words American and Trak, the latter being a sensational spelling of the word “track.” Its name is part of its identity and history, and should be

from big cities, to small towns, and everywhere in between

THAT TAKE YOU

POSTER SERIES Amtrak had a long running travel poster series that featured destinations and routes across America until their rebrand in 2000. It was a successful campaign that needed to be brought back, but expanded to highlight the benefits of train travel and on additional advertising platforms. All examples shown are new content.

FORGEDpublic typography in automotive repair

Forged directs its headlights toward the public typography commonly found in mom-and-pop automotive repair shops. Thanks to interviews of mechanics and owners, the voice and content is 100% authentic to the industry and automotive shops featured in the book. Each garage generally contains the same core components: a first typographic impression, a garage filled with tools and machines and cars that need fixing. But a closer look into the mirror reveals that automotive repair typography is deeply rooted in nostalgia and tradition.

“I love photography because it gives mea chance to show others how I see the world. Forged marked the beginning of when I began to see a typographic language in everything. “

I SCREAMRBMM website cover art

An illustration inspired the summer heat in Dallas, TX and the nostalgic frozen treats that help keep us cool. The piece was featured on RBMM’s website and can be found on their Cover Art Archive page: rbmm.com/covers/

“The simplicity of flat design poses aunique visual problem. Finding ways to add detail and complexity by using just color, effects, and gradients made me think about vector illustration and building files in a whole new way. This was my first full project I did using a Wacom Tablet – not only was it a learning experience, but I expanded my abilities for future illustrations.”

SCENEa new kind of search

Imagine a world where you could know what is happening and who is there, before you even step inside the door. A world where every coffee shop could show the line going out the door or a quiet patio with plenty of table space for studying or a poetry reading forming in their main lounge – all through a live, real time video stream that gives you a true idea of how busy a place is before going.

Want to grab a drink with friends, but don’t want to see your ex? With Scene, the app uses GPS and social media (twitter, facebook, instagram, periscope, and spotify) to provide a real time list of friends, acquaintances, and strangers who are already there and what they are saying about the place. The band opener is awesome, the place is packed and loud, no one is dancing because the DJ blows, the bar still has Boulevard Chocolate Ale…if people are having a good time (or even an awful time), you can see the scene first and go there second.

THE COLLECTIONshel silverstein poetry collection

Combining poems from Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” “Falling Up,” and “A Light in the Attic,” I designed and illustrated a new and reimagined world for some of my favorite childhood poems.

“Silverstein invited us to be creators anddreamers, so in light of his challenge, I created a colorful collection of his work focusing on the poems themselves as an expressive entity. The original illustrations by Silverstein are pictured in the book’s special feature chapter, as to not deny his incredible illustration skills.”

All illustrations and handlettering were hand painted using acrylics.

SHAKE UP YOUR HOLIDAYCentral Market Holiday Campaign

This is my process behind the brainstorming and execution of the final pitch I was able to give before the end of my intership at RBMM, which was chosen to be their 2015 Holiday Campaign.

“They say that the first job out of college will be the time I learn the most, but I think my internship at RBMM served as the experience to truly prepare me for being a professional. It was a learning experience that pushed me beyond what I thought even possible and I’m a better designer because of it.

THE HAVANASa typographic journal

When I traveled to Miami, Florida and Havana, Cuba, I kept a journal. Before I booked my ticket, I knew I wanted to focus the camera on the typography found in the neighboring cities that share so much history, culture, and influence. Miami and Cuba share an unique and complicated history, which shows in the mixed influence on architecture, typography, and bright, colorful personality.

“This is my journal, but it’s okay if you want to read it. I had played with a variet of formats, but my journal felt like the perfect format for a project so personal. The words and pictures are mine, but they’re meant to be shared and seen.”
