Missouri State Penitentiary100 Lafayette Street(866) 998-6998 | www.MissouriPenTours.com
Decommissioned in 2004, the Missouri State Penitentiary is now open to the public for hard hat tours. Before it closed, MSP was the oldest continually operating penitentiary west of the Mississippi. The prison was 100 years old when Alcatraz began taking inmates. When this prison opened in 1836, the Battle of the Alamo was going on in Texas and Andrew Jackson was in his second term. The tour showcases cells including those of famous inmates such as heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, who learned to box during his time in the big house, and James Earl Ray. Other stops on the tour are the gas chamber where 40 men and women were executed, the buried cells, several housing units and the upper yard. In 1967 the Missouri State Penitentiary was infamously named the bloodiest 47 acres in America by Time magazine because of the incredibly high number of serious assaults on the grounds between 1963-1964. Public tours cost $12 per person. Call the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau for available tour times. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

The Supreme Court is the state's highest court. Many of the days' most important and often controversial legal issues affecting Missourians and involving the state's Constitution and laws come before this court. The Supreme Court, by the state Constitution, supervises courts in Missouri. It also prescribes the procedures and practices followed by judges and lawyers in trying cases in the state's courts. The Supreme Court Building in Jefferson City became a permanent home for the Court at its completion in 1907 using funds from the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis. Look for the glass floors in the library. The building did not have electricity when it was built, but the glass floors allowed light from the windows to filter down to the main floor. Tours of the Supreme Court are given Monday through Friday on the half hour from 9 - 11:30 a.m. & 1 - 3:30 p.m. Free admission.

The river whispers memories of fur traders and steamboat captains, settlers and scallywags. It tells you that its time to shift into slow-motion. Youll discover that taking it easy is suddenly easier after dark in Jefferson City.
The f lavor of Jefferson City dining ranges from pizza to grill and pub to casual and formal elegance. If you like outside dining try downtown or our wineries.
