A NOTE FROM JEFF

Over the last several years more and more of our business has come from the internet. It is fascinating to me seeing people drive hours to buy from us. It is even more fascinating when I see them fly in to North Carolina or Roanoke and the drive to buy from us.

I believe there are several reasons they do this. First we carry a very large inventory of new and used vehicles. Our used vehicles are hand selected from all over the southeast and beyond to insure we have the right vehicles for our customers.

A second reason and a very big reason is our pricing. We use a very sophisticated pricing program that looks at all vehicles on the internet to insure we our pricing is at or below market pricing to insure we can give our customers the very best deals.

If we cannot acquire a vehicle from our auction and fleet outlets at a price that puts it at or below market we simply do not buy the vehicle. This insures we can take care of our customers each and every time.

Perhaps not the biggest reason (but maybe it should be the biggest reason) people buy online from us is the fact that we don’t charge processing fees. We were doing this way before the internet.

The average dealer charges $400-$700 in processing fees. What that means is that if you buy a vehicle from us for the same price as another dealer you are actually saving $400-$700. This is certainly something to think about.

Check it out for yourself…or come by and see us. I promise you are going to like it here!!!

Sincerely,

Jeff Johnson

CAR AND TRUCK OF THE YEAR

The all-new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Chevrolet Silverado have earned the titles of 2014 North American Car and Truck of the Year, respectively. This marks only the third time in the awards’ 21-year history that one automaker has swept both awards.

“It is a distinct honor for the entire Chevrolet team to have both Corvette and Silverado recognized with these prestigious awards,” said Alan Batey, General Motors senior vice president, Global Chevrolet. “Chevrolet is in the midst of the most aggressive product transformation in the brand’s more than 100-year history. Corvette and Silverado truly embody the passion, commitment and focus that is driving us to deliver the most expressive designs, innovative technologies and engaging performance in every vehicle that wears the bowtie.”

North American Car and Truck of the Year are awarded annually at the start of media week at the NAIAS. Forty-nine automotive journalists from the United States and Canada vote to recognize the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.North American Car of the Year is just the latest of more than 20 awards and recommendations the 2014 Corvette Stingray has received since its introduction last fall, making it the industry’s most awarded car of the year. Stingray is the most powerful standard Corvette model

ever with 455 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque from a 6.2L V8 engine. And it packs an even more impressive 460 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque with the available performance exhaust system, enabling models with the available Z51 Performance Package to sprint from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds. The Stingray engine features advanced technologies including Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management to balance performance with the greatest efficiency of any sports car on the market — an EPA-estimated 29 MPG highway when equipped with the 7-speed manual transmission.

The all-new 2014 Silverado completed the sweep, winning the award for North American Truck of the Year. Silverado was recognized for features such as its available 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine, which generates 355 horsepower for confident towing and hauling, yet seamlessly switches to four cylinders to save fuel during light-load driving. With an EPA-estimated 23 MPG highway, Silverado offers the best fuel economy of any V8 pickup. Silverado 1500 also recently received the highest possible 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

Ingenuity has its rewards.

CAR BUYING ON-LINEBE CAREFUL WHO YOU BUY FROM

If people are spending money somewhere on the Internet, there are likely scammers there too, cashing in on unsuspecting shoppers. There has been a surge in online car buying in recent years, especially with used cars. This has led to a rise in fraud. Crooks post ads for nonexistent cars, shoppers wire funds for the vehicle, and, poof, that money vanishes into thin air.

Auto fraud accounts for 12 percent of all online purchase scams, totaling $64 million in consumer losses, according to the most recent Internet Crime Complaint Center annual report. Dependable Auto Shippers, one of the largest vehicle shipping service providers in the world, wants to make people aware of just how big of a risk this fraud poses.

DAS said that scammers entice their victims with incredibly cheap prices and the promise of using a shipping service to deliver the vehicle. They’ll also demand immediate payment due to some bogus reason, such as military deployment or a tragic family emergency. Victims then send an unrecoverable payment through a money transfer or money order for a nonexistent vehicle.

The average amount of money lost on one of these scams is $3,700, according to the Internet Criminal Complaint Center.

Below are four Tips To Avoid On-line Fraud

1. Never wire paymentLegitimate dealers will never ask for a wire transfer. If you’re dealing with a private seller and they want you to us something like Western Union, request an alternate form of payment. Scammers use wire transfers because it is essentially the same thing as sending cash in the mail. Once the money is gone, it cannot be recovered.

2. Talk on the phoneA seller making excuses for not being able to speak on the phone is a big red flag. By speaking with the seller (email doesn’t count), you can get more info on the background and history of the person or business.

3. Slow downIf a seller says the vehicle is being held by a transportation company and will ship as soon as payment is received, take a minute to call the shipping company to validate the arrangement. Scammers love to pressure their victims into quickly sending payment with fake sob stories or really low prices on the car. You need to be diligent, do your homework and take your time with a big purchase like this.

4. Examine information carefullyA listing with stock images of a used car is an indication of a scam. If there are pictures, make sure the colors, body work and other distinguishing features match up with the description.

BACKING UPFIFTH WHEEL TRAILER TIPS

• Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction that you want the trailer to go. Some folks like to place a hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and move it in the direction they want the trailer to turn towards.

• Take your time. Get out and survey the situation. Plan how you want to back the trailer in. Look for obstacles and move anything that is in the way. Don’t forget to look up. Tree branches can ruin your day.

• Have a good spotter. Create simple but very clear set of hand signals. Discuss your tactics so both know how we want to perform the backing maneuvers. Also if you can’t see your spotter then don’t back up.

• Have clean and properly adjusted mirrors and use them. Make sure you can see your spotter in your mirrors and monitor them every few seconds.

• Pay attention to the front. It’s very easy to get all caught up in backing and forget what is right in front of the truck. While the trailer turns into the RV site your truck front end will be heading away from it at the same time until you pass the middle point in the turn.

• Ignore all the helpful bystanders they will usually only cause confusion. Have one spotter you can trust. Folks are very well meaning but too many cooks ruin the meal.

• Try to always back into spots on the driver’s side. Backing into a spot on the passenger side is called a blind back in and is more difficult, due to limited visibility with the trailer blocking your vision.

• Write this down and stick it on the dash – (GOAL) It stands for Get Out And Look and is used by professional truck drivers. Never keep backing up if you’re unsure about something.

SERVICE TIP’S OF THE DAY

Check Engine Oil At Every Other Fill-upFor an accurate reading, follow this procedure:

• Run or drive your car for about 15 minutes to warm the oil; then park the car in a level place.Turn off the engine and wait 15 minutes to allow the oil in the engine to drain back to the oil pan.

• Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel or rag. Reinsert the dipstick, being sure to push it in all the way, then pull it out again to check the oil level. It should be somewhere between the hash marks on the dipstick.

• Add the type and amount of oil as specified in your owner’s manual, if necessary.

Don’t Forget The Timing Belt

On many cars, it’s the belt you can’t see that is the most critical. If your manual says, as many do, that you should replace the timing belt at 50,000 miiles, do it! A failed timing belt can, depending on engine type, cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your engine.

WHAT IS THE VIN?The Vehicle Identification Number, commonly referred to as the VIN, is a sequence of 17 letters and numbers that is uniquely assigned for each vehicle. The VIN can usually be found on the driver’s side dashboard near or under the bottom portion of the windshield. It can also be found in various other places on the vehicle, including the certification label found on the driver’s doorjamb.

The VIN provides some information about the vehicle. It is typically composed of four sections. The first three digits are called the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). This identifies where the vehicle was manufactured or assembled and the type of vehicle it is. Honda has factories in Japan, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Each factory has it’s own identifying code. For example, a VIN starting with 1HG

identifies a passenger vehicle manufactured at Honda of America, while 2HG identifies a passenger vehicle manufactured at Honda of Canada. Honda currently has 10 different manufacturing locations.

The next five digits (4 through 8) are the Vehicle Description Section (VDS). These digits provide information on the engine type, body style, and vehicle model type. The ninth digit is a check digit used internally. The 10th digit indicates the model year; letters (except “O” and “Z”) were used for vehicles up to the 2000 model year while numbers are used for 2001 and newer vehicles. For example, “X” means the 1999 model year, “Y” is the 2000 model year and “1” represents the 2001 model year. The 11th digit is the plant code. Finally, digits 12 - 17 are the serial number, which is unique to each vehicle.

The 2nd Annual Blue Ridge Acoustic Uprising will be held April 11th and 12th at the Wytheville Meeting Center in Wytheville, VA. Thirty-three bluegrass, old time and Americana bands will be showcasing their talents on stage and there is a wide array of other events scheduled at the gathering. The Appalachian Cultural Music which is a non-profit organization presents the Blue Ridge Acoustic Uprising each year at the Wytheville Meeting Center which is adjacent to Wytheville Community College.

“In addition to the two days of band showcases there is also a trade show, musical instrument auction, jam sessions, dance contest, networking with musicians and other professionals in the music business, great food and a whole lot of fun,” states Johnny Williams the chairman of the event for the ACMA. “Musicians from all over the southern Appalachian and Blue Ridge region agree this is a great opportunity for bands to be seen and heard by not only the public but also music producers, record labels, booking agents and others who can help their careers”, says Williams.

Johnson Family RV will be there also. Come see us when you come to the shows. We will have an RV set up at the front entrance on display and you know we will have a drawing of some kind.

Ingredients1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking soda1/2 teaspoon fine salt2 large eggs, at room temperature1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus more for greasing the pan1 cup sugar3 very ripe bananas, peeled and mashed with a fork (about 1 cup)1/2 cup toasted walnut pieces

SPRINGDESSERT RECIPE

DirectionsSift the flour, baking soda and salt into a medium bowl and set aside. Whisk the eggs and vanilla together in a liquid measur-ing cup with a spout and set aside. Lightly brush a 9- by 5- by 3-inch loaf pan with but-ter. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Cream the butter and sugar in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or with a hand-held mixer) until light and fluffy. Gradually pour the egg mixture into the butter, while mixing, until incorporated. Add the bananas (the mixture will appear to be curdled, so don’t worry), and remove the bowl from the mixer.

With a rubber spatula, mix in the flour mix-ture until just incorporated. Fold in the nuts and transfer the batter to the prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the cen-ter of the bread comes out clean, about 55 minutes. Cool the bread in the pan on a rack for 5 minutes. Turn the bread out of the pan and let cool completely on the rack. Wrap in plastic wrap. The banana bread is best if served the next day.
