Dear Reader, each time I sit down to write the foreword to the magazine, the fi rst

thing I do is look through the photos to be printed. This time around

what caught my attention was how different the articles in this issue

are. I’m delighted that we’re able to show such different and personal

homes within the style. Going through the photos also evokes different

emotions: Wonderful memories of the day the pictures were taken,

like when we had a picnic by the ocean with Susanne and dorte.

We had a lovely time, walking on the beach and making pierogies in

lonnie’s summerhouse. Thanks to the surroundings, there was almost a

holiday mood despite the fact that we were working. oftentimes,

a day like that is when we come upon many new ideas for articles.

But I especially recall from this day that we were working in-between

rain showers and that the water was quite cold and murky. There was

a fair amount of laughing, shouting and shrieking but we had to get the

photos and of course we did. But then later on, it cleared up and we ended up

sitting outside, enjoying the food and the last rays of sun after the picnic had been

photographed. We didn’t want to go home at all.

That brings my mind to something else... don’t you just love a really lazy Sunday all by

yourself ? I do! Time practically stands still. A whole day where nothing is planned in advance and

you can just be yourself. do whatever you want. Take a stroll through the half-empty streets in town.

Maybe pop into a café to enjoy a latte together with the Sunday paper. or perhaps take a bike ride at

random - with a picnic basket! That’s a possibility. Just enjoy your own company. Peace and quiet and

thoughts taking fl ight. doing something nice and luxurious - just for you - and enjoying the sense

of happiness it can bring. It sounds silly but if you’ve never done it, you should try it! Susanne

suggested it to me - and it works! When you have a busy everyday life, days like these are like a day

in Paradise. Whether you have a family or are single actually doesn’t matter. neither does what you

end up doing. It’s just a pure joy to get to the point where you enjoy your own company. Allow

yourself time to be a bit self-centered. Time to refl ect. Time to recharge. Because THeN you’ll

have the energy to be there for others and energy for all your activities. Such as picking large

amounts of rose hip and raspberries and preserving a bit of summer in jars and in the freezer.

Happy reading!

Maria Carr and her family live on their wonderful ranch in California. Th eir home is proof that you can bring soul and charm even to a new house.

Page 8: Jeanne d'Arc Living Magazine - ISSUE 7 (2012) Old Creamery or Modern Cave

Maria comes from a group of 11 siblings and grew up on a dairy farm in Montana. She understands and loves this particular way of life. After they were married, she and her husband Thad moved to Japan, where Thad trained horses. Two years later, Thad’s work brought the couple back to the US again; first to southern California, after which Thad was offered management of a farm in northern California. It’s been eight years now since the couple settled down here.

Although their new home was newly built with all the modern conveniences, the couple felt that it lacked both charisma and personality. Maria wanted to create an atmosphere filled with the soul, feeling and warmth that only old furniture and artifacts can provide.

Maria views the decoration of a home as a journey. She makes trips to auctions and antique stores, looking for things that fit perfectly with the decor. This way, the decoration is constantly changing and creating new experiences and moods. Her preferred artifacts are rustic, old items from France. She especially has a soft spot for chandeliers.

She thinks it’s wonderful to add a bit of color to the home. For a long time, she went for a completely white interior. But she felt that white furniture blended in with the white walls too much. She decided to try painting the walls gray and was amazed at the difference it made. The furniture stood out in a whole new way. In addition to the gray walls, Maria adds warm pastels and very rustic furniture with plenty of patina. Even though she’s painted many of her finds and has even added new detailing to some of the furniture, she always tries to discover the history behind the pieces. She loves knowing from what kind of homes they came and the stories that each individual piece of furniture tells.

Textiles are important to Maria and should be kept in neutral colors. They add so much warmth and personality. Without textiles, a room can seem very sterile and cold. Her love of textiles led her to open an online store - ”dreamywhites.com” - which offers pillows, aprons, runners, bags, French bed linens and lavender sachets made from European grain sacks.

Idea forthe DiningRoomMaria has chosen to use white, gauzy curtains in almost all windows and patio doors in the home, which lets in nature and light. They all hang from curtain rods made from old, gnarled branches. An amazing idea that’s easy to go for.
