Fifty years a go, I was outfitted with a bizarre contraption consisting of a mask, an air tank, regulator, and fins, and thrown into the water. I was seven. And to the eyes of a boy of seven, the sea was a wondrous place. It was like entering into a

dream world of strange creatures and vivid colors more fantastic than any tall tale I could ever think up. And with the primitive scuba apparatus constructed by my father, I was able to fly weightless above the canyons of this magical water planet. In retrospect, I now see how the experience of diving opened my heart, mind and

spirit to a whole new side of life.” —Jean-Michel Cousteau
