JDSU Fiber Inspection

Standard Patch Cord Tips These tips are for looking at patch cords (e.g., pigtails, male connectors, etc.). Currently available are two main “Universal Patch Cord” tips. One tip is compatible with 2.5mm ferrules (e.g., FC, SC, ST) while the other works well for 1.25mm ferrules (e.g., LC, MU). There are also dedicated tips for looking at APC patch cords.

JDSU Tips and Adapters for Fiber Inspection

Standard Bulkhead Tips These are specific tips for viewing common connectors through a bulkhead adapter. These tips allow you to inspect the fiber surface located behind of the bulkhead (e.g., inside hardware devices or on the back side of patch panels).

Align & insert the key on the tip into the key channel of the bulkhead adapter.

To attach/secure to barrel assembly, align & insert the key on the tip into the key channel of the barrel assembly and thread.

Long-Reach Bulkhead TipsSmall form-factor connectors can produce some tight work spaces. In cases where you may want to inspect a single channel while the adjacent channels are still occupied with connectors or dust plugs. You may need to use a narrow tip with a little longer reach. For this situation we recommend using our Long Reach tips, usually denoted as “-L.” They have about 1/2” longer reach than our standard tips and do not have the forward retaining nut. They can therefore “reach” between connectors and inspect ports quickly and easily. This also reduces the chances of contaminating adjacent channels during inspection.

RibbonDrive™ TipsJDSU has developed several configurations of patented RibbonDrive™ probe tips for inspection of high-density, multifiber array connectors end faces. These dedicated tips are designed to inspect connectors that are mounted within a bulkhead adapter (in-situ inspection). Each tip mates securely with bulkhead mating adapters using a precision-keyed interface. The “panning” and “scrolling” knobs allow the user to view each fiber individually across both the X & Y axes of the fiber arrays.

Angled Tips (60 Degrees)Our angled tips, denoted as “-A6,” are angled at 60 degrees to allow inspection of transceivers and other hard-to-reach fibers. Regardless of where the transceiver is mounted on a PCB, the probe and tip can be maneuvered to fit into the transceiver and provide high-quality microscopic inspection.

Universal Flare and FMA AdaptersIf you are familiar with JDSU’s benchtop fiber inspection products, you probably have seen our complete line of quality, high-performance adapters (FMA’s). If you would like to use your “FMA” adapters (ex: FMA-MTPA, FMA-E2A, etc.), with a probe microscope, the universal flare adapter (FBPT-UFMA) make this possible.

FMAE AdaptersFMAE adapters are used in conjunction with the integrated Patch Cord Microscopes (PCM) that are on many of our handheld devices (ex: OLP-82P). Having dedicated microscopes for inspecting both ends (PCM for Patch Cord & Probe for Bulkhead) of a connection improves workflow and efficiency by eliminating the need to change tips to inspect both sides.



Installing FBPT Tips on FBP-Series Probes

Some tips require an optical barrel assembly (which is included with the probe), while other tips already include their own optics and can attach directly to the probe without the need of a barrel assembly.
