Arai Helmet Fitting GuidelinesEstablishing a rider’s helmet fitA properly fit helmet (to maximize both comfort and safety) should fit snugly around the crown of the rider’s head the way a baseball cap must fit to stay on a player’s head. The rider should sense firm, even pressure at all contact points with no extreme pressure points that could become uncomfortable over time. The sensation should be of the helmet “cra-dling” the entire head as opposed to “grabbing” it at limited points.

STEP 1. Measure the rider’s head with a cloth tape to get a starting point for sizing the helmet. Measure above the eyebrows and ears where a baseball cap would rest.

STEP 2. Fit the Head, not the Face. The helmet must fit the rider’s head first. The rider’s facial dimensions (principally cheeks)can be accommodated by adjusting the cheek pad size and in choosing the proper helmet shape.

FACT: Fitting a helmet to a rider’s face / cheeks could result in the rider being fitted for a helmet that is up to 3 times too large! Arai originated removable cheek pads to ensure riders could achieve a proper “crown fit” regardless of their facial dimensions exactly to avoid this situation.

TIP: Some riders are obsessed with the discomfort of putting the helmet on and taking it off. A simple tip to get past this is to remove the cheek pads and make sure that the rider is properly pulling the chin straps outward from the cheeks so that helmet open-ing is at its widest when putting the helmet on and taking it off. Once on, fit the helmet to the crown of the head. Then remove the helmet and place the cheek pads back in the helmet and have them try it on again explaining that a properly fit helmet will result in some discomfort when putting it on.

STEP 3. NEVER guess or estimate a rider’s size. Some riders many wish to start with their old helmet size. This may not be accurate even within the same brand of helmet.

TIP: A rider should always wear a helmet for a while before finalizing the purchase. Fifteen minutes in the shop will give a fair assessment of how well it will feel during an extended ride. This will save time and potential aggravation after the sale for everyone.

TIP: If after this short fitting test the rider feels discomfort based upon pressure points in specific areas (as opposed to a general sense of the helmet being “too tight”), and the size selected is correct size rider according to the measuring tape, s/he should try on a different Arai helmet with a different head shape before moving to another size.

R75 Impact absorption ComplianceResearching and rating impact energies is what helmet certification agencies do all day long. Unfortunately, they do it in a laboratory using linear impact testing. In the real world, things aren’t that simple.

When you combine the unknowns of real world riding im-pact scenarios - variations in speed, impact angle and impacted objects and shapes - with the fact that a rider can travel at speeds greater than the drop speed used in laboratory impact tests, it becomes clear that the reality of real world impacts can differ significantly from lab testing.

Scientifically speaking… The kinetic energy of a mov-ing object increases by the square of the speed, which means that a street rider travelling at the legal speed limit can be subjected to 12 times the impact energy the world’s most stringent rating standard allows in a helmet that com-plies with the standard! And while no helmet, regardless of brand, can be expected to manage such energies there are ways to minimize the liklihood of their occurence through conscientious helmet design that minimizes the liklihood of direct impacts, abrupt changes in direction or stopping of of the rider during a slide or twisting of the neck.

Put another way, engineering a helmet to increase the lik-lihood that it will glance off of or slide over an obstacle or uneven surface can substantially improve the odds that it will dissipate impact energy more efficiently significantly improving rider safety. [Continued on page 11]

A Safer Way. The Arai Way. [Continued from page 9]Throughout Arai’s long history, Arai engineers have actively studied impacts and energy reduction, and have made the ability to engineer helmets well be-yond standards and certifications the cornerstone of their engineering pride.

Decades of experience and lessons learned on the street and track continues to reinforce the simple truth that a rounder, smoother and stronger shell is best able to divert impact energy allowing a helmet to slide across uneven surfaces, glance off obstacles more easily and reliably, and minimize excess rotational forces that would otherwise be displaced on the neck of the rider. This knowl-edge has been condensed into an engineering principle based upon a shell shape with a continuous convex curve with a minimum radius of 75mm. A principle Arai calls R75 SHAPE.

R75 may sound complex and on an engineering level it can be. So to make it easy to understand and comply with Arai has developed a simple gauge that allows anyone to measure for it. A R75 Gauge allows a helmet shell’s radius to be measured to see if it is in compliance. Simply move the gauge over the shell surface and as long as the two points of the gauge are touching the surface the shell conforms the R75 Shape concept.

Should the R75 Gauge’s two contact points not be able to touch the shell si-multaneously, this is a spot where the helmet is vulnerable to direct impact due to its inability to glance off of, slide over or otherwise avoid a potential con-tact point at impact.

A R75 SHAPE compliant helmet offers better protection to a rider than one that does not comply.

Keystones of an R75 Designed Helmet.Sometimes too much is just that, too much. When it comes to rider safety helmet design is exactly one of those areas. Fashion has gradually crept into helmet engineering at many manufacturers over the years largely at the ex-pense of rider safety.

Sharp angles in shells and visors, vents moulded into shells that rise far above the shell surface, chin bars that are extended or at angles that make them susceptible to catching upon impact instead of rolling, air spoilers that look cool extended well above the shell surface but that do not break-off easily enough or at all. All of these may provide a radical look, even a cool look, but at a cost to rider safety. None of these are something Arai would allow not only because rider safety comes first, but because rider safety is the entire reason Arai exsts in the first place.

Three key principals guide the R75 initiative in helmet design:

ROUNDER The first hallmark of an R75 engineered helmet is a shell that is rounder. Rounder is stronger and stronger means less material can be used resulting in s smaller shell and lighter overall weight.

SMOOTHER The second hallmark can be seen in a helmet design without added accessories or sharp angle that could prevent a helmet from rolling or sliding at impact, and does not have attachments (vents, visors, air spoliers) that are too firmly or permanently attached. Instead any attachemnts will be frangible meaning they are attached well but will come off on impact preventing them from becoming a potential “catch”. A smooth transition as you move around hte shell means that there is no “catch” that could abruptly cause a downed rider to stop or to change direction putting undue stress on the rider or his neck.

STRONGER The third hallmark of R75 means that a helmet shell will not al-low penetration or deform on impact both of which could result in a concentra-tion of energy in too small an area to allow the helmet to protect adequately. It additionaly minimizes the chance that any undue rotational forces are applied to helmet, and, again, the rider’s neck.

It is common to see helmets with retractable sun visors designed to protect against the sun without having to change shields. Unfortunately the gap between the hel-met’s shell and eps liner this requires directly impacts the helmet’s protective performance in perhaps THE MOST CRITICAL area of the helmet during many im-pacts - the forehead. How Does it Work?Pinlock brand anti-fog inserts are created out of a moisture absorbing plastic and include a silicone seal that creates an airtight pocket between the shield and insert.

The Pinlock Original System is held in place by 2 tension adjusting pins for easy installation/removal as weather conditions change and covers a large portion of the opening.

A fully integrated anti-fog solution, MaxVision Sys-tems cover the entire eyeport eliminating unwant-ed light penetration, as well as the convenience of multiple shield colors in a single shield package. The MaxVision System does not require the use of pins although they are available for optional use. Available with or without brow vents for street or race usage.

Both Pinlock Systems are based on 3 principles that work together:

1. Moisture Absorbing MaterialEach Pinlock insert lens is made out of a soft, porous plastic that is designed to absorb and dissipate moisture.

2. Material ThicknessA Pinlock insert’s thicker material structure allows it to absorb more moisture as well as to offer more impact protection.
