Available at our office in the City Annex, Parks and Recreation gift certificates can be purchased for as little as $5 and are good at any of our facilities or toward the registration fee for any program. THEY SPEND LIKE CASH AT ANY PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITY! If you have a golfer, skater, swimmer, ball player, camper, or even a couch potato who needs to get up and get active, what would be a better gift?

Fragrance Free Policy

The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission respectfully requests and encourages all patrons attending or participating in any Parks and Recreation meeting, special event, facility or program remain as fragrance free as possible by not wearing perfume, after shave, scented lotions, fragranced hair products and/or other similar products. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Jefferson City is home to an award winning Parks and Recreation Department. As the capital city of Missouri, maintaining our local parks and recreation facilities and implementing programs to meet the ever changing needs of our community and its visitors is a challenge. The Jefferson C ity Parks and Recreation Foundation strives to provide additional resources to leverage taxes, fees and grants to enhance our parks and recreation services. Over the years, civic minded individuals and organizations have maintained a tradition of enhancing the quality of life for their families, friends, and neighbors through generous donations to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation system. In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation was formed to provide continuing leadership and foster the expansion of parks and recreation services in Jefferson City. The Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the value of parks and recreation - both passive and active - not only for individual growth and development, but also for a strong family unit and for making our community a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit. If you believe, as we do, that wholesome recreation pursuits make individuals more productive in their homes and communities and lead to a healthier and happier life, please commit your support to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation. Land, trees, fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees for youth programs are all gifts that can make a difference in people’s lives. Any and all size of gifts to our community are appreciated and contribute to the livability and quality of life of Jefferson City. For more information on how you can make a tax deductible contribution of land, money, or other gifts, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director William Lockwood at 634-6482.

Jefferson City Parks & Recreation

Foundation As a recipient of federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission and the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation operates programs subject to the non-discrimination requirements of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Under Title VI, the U.S. Department of the Interior strictly prohibits discrimination because of race, color, or national origin in its federally assisted programs. Any person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any program or facility of the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation, or desires further information regarding Title VI, should write immediately to: The Office for Equal Opportunity U.S. Department of Interior Office of the Secretary Washington, D.C. 20240

Equal Opportunity

In any Parks and Recreation program, a participant who is bleeding or who has blood on his/her clothing shall be prohibited from participating further in the activity until appropriate treatment has been administered. Appropriate treatment may include bandaging as necessary to prevent recurrence. This policy has been implemented to protect the participants, coaches, staff, and their families from diseases transported through the accidental contact of tainted blood. If medical care is needed, the participant must leave the activity until the problem situation has been resolved. A 70% isopropyl alcohol solution must be used to disinfect the skin and clothing. All infected areas must be thoroughly cleaned before this individual is allowed to continue participating in the activity. This may require that the player remove affected clothing and replace it in order to be able to continue participating. All participants should bring an extra shirt, pair of pants/shorts, and socks to each activity to change into in the event a blood incident should occur.

The Parks and Recreation Commission believes that no youth should be denied access to Parks and Recreation programs for financial reasons. The Parks and Recreation Foundation makes recreation sponsorships available to those who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in organized recreation activities. Those seeking sponsorships will be asked to complete a Recreation Sponsorship Application Form available through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sponsorships are generally limited to those receiving benefits from a form of public assistance as designated on the application form. Sponsorship funding is limited to $200 per individual per calendar year and is restricted to ongoing programs conducted by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized programs of short duration conducted by non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics) are ineligible for sponsorship funding. All application forms requesting funding for youth programs must be signed by the parent/guardian of the prospective participant. Participants/parents must pay a minimum of 20% of the registration fee for programs for which sponsorship assistance is requested. Questions concerning this service may be directed to Phil Stiles at 634-6482.

Bleeding Policy

Sponsorships

The views of any program or activity advertised within this guide and sponsored by any organization other than the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department do not necessari-ly reflect the views of the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department.

Swim Lessons

Some levels may be combined due to low enrollment.

QUAL ITY , CONVEN IENCE , AND FUN ! Through a cooperative agreement with the American Red Cross, morning and evening group lessons are offered for all ability levels, making

it as convenient as possible for families with children of all ages. All instructors are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors or Water Safety

Instructor Aids. Eight lessons are scheduled during a two or four week period. Lessons held Monday through Thursday each week will

have Friday as the built-in rain date and a four week session (M/W or T/TH) will have a built-in rain date the following week.

Parent Day for all classes will be the fourth day of lessons. Parents may participate in lessons on this day.

Students successfully completing the required skills will receive Red Cross certification. Repetition can be the key to

learning. Students often repeat a level several times before mastering the skills required for advancement. It is important for you and your

child to understand that repeating a level does not constitute failure. Mastering skills takes time, practice and patience.

Figure Skating Practice

Washington Park Ice Arena 711 Kansas Street 634-6580 www.jeffcitymo.org/parks

Freestyle sessions are offered for skaters who are in advanced levels of figure skating. A skater must be in Freestyle 1 or above to

be able to practice on these sessions. A skater in the Learn-to-Skate lessons may use a freestyle time for a private lesson, but only

for the duration of their lesson.

Dates and times are available on the Freestyle/Stick & Puck Calendars on the website at www.jeffcitymo.org/parks.

A staff member will be on duty to take admission and the pro shop will be open.

1. Freestyles are practice sessions. Socializing should be done off the ice prior to or after the session. There will be no standing in

groups talking or skaters will be asked to disperse or leave the ice.

2. The following priority will be followed regarding right of way on the ice.

a. skaters doing their program with music over the ice.

b. skaters in a lesson.

c. all other skaters.

3. Please watch out for other skaters especially while skaters are doing their

program to music. This does not mean you need to stand and watch. Use the

simple rule: look where you are going. It is the responsibility of higher level

skaters to watch out for skaters at a lower level.

4. Program music should be played from start to finish, once. Please do not stop

and restart your program as there may be others who are waiting to have their

music played. When everyone has had their music played, you may play yours

again. Be courteous. Professionals with lessons may cut in line no more than

one time per lesson when needed.

5. Please follow the standard ice etiquette for practicing jumps/spins/teaching

areas (see Ice Etiquette map). This does not apply during programs.

6. There will be NO unsportsmanlike behavior from skaters or observers such as

kicking the ice, foul language, yelling at other skaters to get out of the way, or

intimidating behavior. Skaters or observers who behave in such a manner will

be asked to leave the ice and/or arena and will not be given refunds.

7. No food or drinks other than water on the ice. No chewing gum.

8. No sitting on the boards.

9. For safety reasons, iPods, MP3 players or any other personal device with head

phones are prohibited during freestyles sessions.

10. Proper attire should be worn on all sessions.

11. Bleachers or lobby area should be used to observe skaters. Only qualified coaches

are allowed to be in teaching areas. No relatives or friends should cause distractions from off the ice as it could disturb other skat-

ers/coaches. If need be, please exit the ice from the opened entrance door to speak with parents or observers. Please do not

open side doors on the bleacher side.

12. Videotaping must be done off the ice from the bleachers unless authorized to do otherwise.

PAVILION AND BUILDING RENTAL

All outdoor pavilions have enough picnic tables, restrooms, barbecue pits, water fountains and water spigots to accommodate the designated capacity. Those facilities with kitchens also have sinks, counter space, refrigerators and serving areas.

FACILITY RENTAL POLICIES 1. These rates apply to all individuals, businesses, and organizations.

2. Reservations are accepted first-come-first-served up to one year in advance. Inquiries may be made by telephone, but reservations

must be made in person, unless using a credit card. All reservations made more than sixty days in advance are required to pay a

$10 non-refundable holding fee to reserve a facility. The balance of the rental amount and deposit are due sixty days prior to the

rental date. If the full payment is not received by this time, the Department of Parks and Recreation will consider the

reservation canceled and will rent the facility to another individual, business or organization, if requested. Reservations made less

than sixty days in advance of use will be required to pay the full amount at the time the reservation is made.

3. The $10 facility holding fee required to reserve park facilities/shelters is not refundable under any circumstance except if Parks and

Recreation is responsible for the cancellation. If a cancellation occurs ten or more business days prior to the scheduled reserva-

tion, the facility/hayride rental fee and deposit is refundable, less a $10 processing fee. If a cancellation occurs less than ten

business days prior to the reservation, 1/2 of the rental fee and the entire damage deposit will be refunded.

4. All facilities require a $50 damage, clean-up, and/or key deposit in addition to rental charges payable by cash, check, MasterCard,

Visa, Discover or bank debit card. Provided the key is returned (if applicable), the facility is cleaned properly and there is no

damage, the deposit, if paid by cash or check will be returned by mail approximately two to three weeks after the date of usage.

If paid by credit/debit card the refund will be credited back to the card the Monday after your rental.

5. Sale of items, usage after 11 p.m., charging admission, and playing amplified music require the completion of a Special Use Permit

Application and advance approval of the Department of Parks and Recreation prior to a reservation being made, but not less than

10 business days in advance of the planned reservation.

6. Alcoholic beverages are permitted in the parks except where specifically prohibited and posted.

7. All rental time outside park public access hours of 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. carries an additional charge of $25/hour above and

The Parks and Recreation Department operates a wood chip and mulch give-away program adjacent to the Composting Exhibit Site in Memorial Park. When excess wood chips or mulch are produced during forestry maintenance, they are dumped at the site and are free for the taking for the general public. Availability varies throughout the year. Just bring your vehicle and your shovel and load the wood chips anytime the park is open. The compost site at Memorial Park does not accept yard waste or tree trimmings. Please do not drop off any items at the compost site. If you have yard waste to dispose, please go to 2417 Southridge Drive. This service is free for City residents. For more information on yard waste drop off, contact Jefferson City Community Development at 634-6409 or www.jeffcitymo.org.

WOOD CHIP & MULCH

Is your group coming to Jefferson City for a visit? Does your visit include sightseeing at the Capitol? If so, you can arrange an informative session about the history of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery. Docents will be on duty at the monument Saturdays and Sundays and on holiday Mondays from mid-May through mid-September from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The docents can also ac-commodate groups visiting Jefferson City on weekdays year round. The docents speak to the personalities of the figures and their accomplishments on the expedition and what be-came of these people after the expedition. This information may not generally be known by most visitors. Questions and personal interaction between the docent and the visitors is encouraged to improve understanding. This session typically takes between ten to fifteen minutes, depending on questions and ongoing interactions. Visitors are encouraged to walk up among the individual figures as they provide a focal point for a photographic souvenir of their vis-it. Children may sit on Seaman the dog or in the lap of York and/or Droulliard. Caution by parents is recommended. To arrange a tour for your group please contact Amy Shaw at [email protected].
