JB Glass Railing is a system of metal railing components for usewith 12" or 34" tempered glass panels as structural balusters.

Aluminum Shoe Mouldings are designed to support a designload of 300 lbs. applied at any point at the top of a railing up to 42" in height. Proper mounting of the shoe moulding is crucial to thestrength of JB Glass Railing. Test results are available upon request or from our website, www.juliusblum.com. Mechanicalproperties of glass may be verified with supplier of glass panels.

Shoe mouldings are supplied in two configurations and two alloys.Available for 12" and 34" tempered glass, the heavier sections, in alloy6063-T52, may be anodized and are better suited for bending and fas-cia mounting. The lighter section is extruded in high-strength alloy6061-T6 to provide required strength with minimum weight. All threesections can be surface mountedexposed or with a sheet metaltrimor set flush with the floor surface.

A Protective Insert prevents direct metal to glass contact andfits closely inside the recess in the handrail mouldings that aremounted to the glass with an adhesive selected at the discretionof the specifier.

The Setting Block supports and cushions the lower edge of theglass while centering it in the channel of the shoe moulding.

Glass panels are set in the shoe moulding using a filler selectedat the discretion of the architect or fabricator. Do not use epoxy-based fillers.

For matching wall-mounted or glass mounted handrail, use Carlstadt wall brackets with matching tubing sections or JB GlassRailing sections and concealed, inserted closure.

The glass tempering process requires that all fabrication be completed prior to tempering. Attempts to cut, drill or grind the edgesafter tempering are likely to cause breakage.

Aluminum glass rail sections are extruded from alloy 6063-T52and, when properly fabricated, are suitable for anodizing, includingmost of the hard-coat anodic processes. Black anodizing may result ininconsistent matches. Consult your anodizer before specifying.

Bronze glass rail sections are extruded from alloy C38500,architectural bronze.

Nickel-Silver extrusions are of alloy C79800. Nickel-silver is a copper alloy, similar in appearance to stainless steel with goldenhighlights. Nickel-silver sheets are available in various widths for use ascladding for shoe mouldings.

Stainless Steel glass rail sections are roll-formed, type 302/304(18-8). It is important to be aware that connections of roll-formed stain-less steel shapes require special attention to assure proper alignment.

Acrylic/Wood glass rail section is produced from oak which hasbeen impregnated with acrylic plastic according to the Permagrain

Radiation Process. This provides a hard surface and permanent finishwhich has twice the resistance to indentation and several times theresistance to abrasion as the same conventional hardwood finish. It islaminated from several strips to obtain greater strength and continuousuniform lengths.

All items are carried in stock in substantial quantities for promptshipment.

CORNER BENDS, MITER CORNERS, END CAPSRadius and miter elbows match the contour of 1.900", 212", 3",312", and 4" round tubing shapes. Either style of elbow may be used as a wall return and is attached to handrail by use of inter-nal connector sleeves and structural adhesive. End caps are available for most sections and may be attached by structural adhesive.

HANDRAIL AND TUBINGJB Glass Railing top mouldings are available in several shapesand sizes in aluminum, bronze, nickel-silver, stainless steel, andoak acrylic/wood. Handrails may be wall mounted using Carlstadt brackets with an anchor plug or by using availablematching 1.900", 212", 3", 312", and 4" tubing. Handrails may bemounted directly to the glass using Glass Mounted Handrail Kitwith Carlstadt wall brackets.

GLASS MOUNTINGResilient setting blocks support and cushion glass panels as they are inserted in the shoe. Setting blocks should be 4" to 6" long andplaced at points 14 and 34 distance from edge of the length of thepanel from each end. Space is allowed for plumbing and setting of glasschoice of filler material is at the discretion of the specifier/fabricator. Spacer blocks, 14" thick, should be insertedbetween adjoining glass panels to prevent glass to glass contact.

MATCHING STOCK PARTS SPEED FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY

HANDRAIL ASSEMBLYA vinyl protective insert protects the top edge of the glass paneland fits closely inside the handrail moldinga windshield sealertype clear adhesive is recommended. Intermediate rails may beattached directly to the glass (holes must be drilled before temper-ing) using the Glass Mounted Adapter Kit and Carlstadt wallbrackets. Splice connections for tubular sections are accom-plished with internal connector sleeves and structural epoxy.

Gentlemen:At your request, we have conducted tests on aluminum shoe

mouldings specified for the JB Glass Railing System. It is our under-standing that this particular railing system uses 12"-thick temperedglass as a balustrade to support aluminum, bronze, or stainless steelhandrail mouldings. The glass panels are mounted in the aluminumshoe mouldings, which are the subject of this testing.

The objective of these tests was to obtain information concerningthe load versus deflection characteristics of two types of shoe mould-ings, mounted in several different ways. In addition, the tests were todemonstrate that the shoe mouldings could withstand loadings wellin excess of current Model Code regulations, without failure or signif-icant deformation. Most Model Code regulations require a uniformloading of 50 lbs. per lineal foot, and some require a 200-lb. concen-trated load. These loads are not to be applied concurrently.

In the tests conducted and described in our report designatedWJE No. 820960, dated January 13, 1983, concentrated loads of 400lbs. to 800 lbs. were applied at approximately 42" from a referencedfloor surface. The test sections were 4' long. The test results and engi-neering calculations show that the strength of the shoe mouldingswhich were tested would exceed the above-mentioned Model Codeloading criteria by a factor of four.

Handrail may be mounted to the face of the tempered glassbalustrade using a combination of Carlstadt wall brackets andour glass mounting adapter kit. The kit contains a disc with a 38"stud weld, a bushing, and two gaskets.TO ASSEMBLE: Prior to tempering, for 12" glass drill a 58" clear hole; for 34"glass drill a 78" clear hole (Do not attempt to drill a hole in tempered glassit will mostlikely break) insert the bushing in the hole insert the stud welded disc with gasket through the bushing;place the gasket on the other side thread on bracket and tighten.
