Wheeler.
Marty has established himself as one of

An established member of Edmonton’s music
community, Peter continues to enjoy making
music in a variety of situations from the super-
funk sounds of the Superband, to the horn-
heavy pop sounds of the Retrofitz and the folk/
rock sounds of Colleen Brown. Peter is excited to
be releasing his debut CD ‘Melodic Miner’ at the
Yardbird Suite. It features some of Edmonton’s
finest musicians, all original music that captures
the essence of all of Peter’s influences and
melds them together in a very accessible and
unique way.
An in-demand local guitARTist, Peter Belec
finds himself playing all over town and having
a great time doing so. He is a graduate of the
Grant MacEwan guitar program and works as a
freelance player. Despite what the “jazz grimace”
usually found on his face might tell you, Peter
couldn’t be happier playing music. To him it is
the most direct path to pure being.
His style is spontaneous, unique and kinetic,
and ranges from Jazz to Funk to textural sonic
soundscapes. His original music is very fresh
and accessible, with dynamic arrangements
and a real knack for incorporating all of Peter’s
influences.
Finding himself regularly in a recording studio,
he has appeared on numerous local releases
such as Ann Vriend, James Murdoch, Colleen
Brown and Beth Arrison, and some jazz
recordings including Dave Babcock and the
Doug Organ Trio. More recently Peter has been
contributing ‘Belectronics’ to projects such as
Greg Amundson’s ‘Hector Fector’.
Peter was the recipient of the NeXtfest 2007
emerging artist award.

Ubiquitous Orchestra
The earliest incarnation of the Ubiquitous
Orchestra occurred in May ‘93 at the Yardbird
Suite. The primary focus of this ensemble then
and still, was to feature the music of prominent
composers and arrangers ranging from Tadd
Dameron and Gil Evans to Charles Mingus, plus
more contemporary figures like Jaco Pastorius
and Joe Zawinul. The Ubiquitous Orchestra also
frequently dips into the realms of R&B and funk
to round out an already wide spectrum. As a
ten piece band, the Ubiquitous Orchestra is
equipped to explore regions of music a larger
ensemble just would not fit. Each player has a
singular voice in the harmonic structure and is
provided ample opportunity for improvisation.

ÔªøGypsy Jazz was shaped within the context of Paris in the 1930s by Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Together, these two masters popularized this style and made waves throughout the world. Gypsy Jazz is an utterly infectious genre of music that encompasses haunting airs, swinging melodies, driving rhythms and virtuosic improvisation. All of this is delivered with the Gypsy flair. When listening to this music, one can imagine a smoky and crowded bar in France. Hot Club Edmonton seeks to capture the essence of the Quintette du Hot Club de France while paying tribute to two giants in the history of jazz.
Clinton Pelletier and Daniel Gervais were first drawn to Gypsy Jazz in 2003.
Gervais has been playing the violin since the age of five. He plays a variety of fiddle styles and classical violin. He is currently working towards a Bachelor of Music at the University of Alberta as well as having a busy schedule of performing, recording and teaching. Daniel has five recordings to his credit in a variety of genres.
Clinton Pelletier’s understanding and respect of the guitar far exceeds his years. He began playing when he was eleven years old under the guidance of his father, Freddie Pelletier. At sixteen years of age, Clinton received the “B.E.S.T. International Scholarship” from the Berklee College of Music. However, he decided to attend Grant McEwan College in Edmonton where he received Honors with Distinction. Following his studies, he toured with various performers, started several bands, became a much sought-after freelance guitarist and opened his own recording studio.
Revered as one of the top guitar players in Alberta,
the reputation Amos Garrett has spent over four
decades building spans beyond the geography of
the Prairies, reaching into the U.S. and overseas.
This two-time Juno award winner was born in
Detroit, but raised in Toronto. “My first break and
ticket to the U.S. was courtesy of Ian and Sylvia
Tyson,” says Garrett. Garrett went to work with
the Tyson’s new band, Great Speckled Bird. With
their new sound, hard-hitting country-rock, they
headed off to Nashville to record and spend the
next two years touring.
During this time, Garrett was rapidly developing his
own technique: a method of bending more than
one string at a time. This innovation gave Garrett
the ability to sound like a pedal-steel guitarist,
while remaining rooted as a jazz player.
He spent the next number of years moving up
through the guitar ranks and contributing his
legacy to music history. He teamed up with folk
artists Geoff and Maria Muldaur and played guitar
in virtuoso harmonica player Paul Butterfield’s
band Better Days, and later reunited with Maria
Muldaur as her guitar player and band leader.
Garrett was the player who performed the famed
guitar solo in Maria Muldaur’s 1974 hit, “Midnight
at the Oasis.”
“I wanted to sing. I loved to sing, but there was no
way I could do so being a hired gun for bands,”
says Garrett, who has enjoyed a full career both
on his own as well as sharing the stage with other
renowned artists such as Stevie Wonder, Emmylou
Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Anne Murray (with whom
he recorded her first five albums). Over the years,
Garrett has recorded with over 150 artists.
These days, Garrett, who relocated to Alberta in
1989, keeps busy with three bands: his acoustic
act, blues band and the Amos Garrett Jazz Trio. His
most recent recording, “Get Way Back” (2008), is a
tribute to the late blues singer/composer Percy
Mayfield. It received rave reviews.
Amos Garrett can look back on a musical journey
well travelled, proof that hard work and persistence
pay off.

Shirley Johnson
Shirley Johnson has been singing all her life. She got her start singing gospel music in church at the age of six years in Norfolk, Virginia, eventually moving to Chicago where she has held down a weekly gig at Blue Chicago for the past 17 years.
An outstanding vocalist, she has recorded two CDs on Chicago’s Delmark label. The first, Killer Diller, was released in 2002. It is an excellent blues recording showcasing Shirley’s strong gospel roots and soul influences. She followed that up with her latest CD Blues Attack (2009), a mixture of blues originals, R & B, and soul standards, which led to a nomination for this year’s Blues Music Award for traditional blues female artist of the year.
For many years she has been an able ambassador, at home and abroad, representing both the blues and gospel traditions. Shirley has a passionate, strong voice that can deliver a Chicago blues shuffle with uncommon conviction, and infuse a slow ballad with the reassuring power of her own personal experience. Shirley Johnson is an entirely modern blues singer with ample talent, heart and class.
Shirley Johnson will be backed up by one of western Canada’s best blues bands, The Jimmy Guiboche Band featuring Jimmy Guiboche, Graham Guest, Chris Brzezicki and Grant Stovel.
