Message from the President…

We're now in countdown mode for the grand opening celebration for our cool jazz venue, “The Nash.” Construction is well under way, and details of the MIM event on April 11 are being finalized. Due to the strength of the friendship between Lewis Nash and Wynton Marsalis, we are to be blessed with a visit by Wynton to put the official stamp on the new jazz center. Trumpeter, composer, bandleader, music educator and for 16 years the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton has been awarded nine Grammys and numerous accolades, authored five books, won a Pulitzer Prize for his epic oratorio, “Blood on the Fields,” and received the highest honors available to a non-citizen of many countries for his efforts as a musical goodwill ambassador.

Wynton's generous participation in the launch of The Nash demonstrates the level of commitment in the professional jazz community to assure that our youth can carry on the legacy of this indigenous music. With more than 100 years of styles and repertoire, there is much to pass on to the next generation of players. That being said, I want to present to all of you a rare opportunity to change a young musician's life. Tickets for the gala fundraiser at the MIM on April 11 are priced at $250, $200 and $150 to raise necessary funds for The Nash, a cost that is out of reach for students we so want to be a part of the evening. For those of you who see the value in exposing our jazz youth to the sounds of Wynton, Lewis Nash and his all-star group, I encourage you to contribute to our Student Seating Fund. For a minimum contribution of $50, you can help to build the fund that will enable students to attend the concert. There are no “comped” seats for this show. Every single seat matters, and what would make us truly happy would be to see the smiling faces of as many students as possible. That takes your help. I've personally started the fund with a donation of $50, and I encourage you to do the same. Please call Joan at 480-947-6119 today, or go to jazzinaz.org and click on BUY TICKETS, and select the Student Seating Fund option. In all our lives, there have been life-changing moments. I believe that this rare opportunity to provide seats for students could be such a life-changing moment. Please be generous and do your part to change a life.

Sincerely,

Steve DouglasJiA Board President

“Red Hot Chicago Jazz” will fill the ASU Kerr Cultural Center on Wednesday, March 7, when four Windy City musicians take the stage at 7:30 p.m.

The band features “Chicago's Favorite Jazz Woman” (Chicago Tribune award) pianist-vocalist Judy Roberts, brilliant saxophonist Greg Fishman, unique guitarist-bassist Neal Seroka and

special guest vocalist Wayne Messmer of Chicago Cubs-Blackhawks national anthem-fame, bringing their Chi-town witty humor and

swinging sounds. They will perform a variety of material, including their own greatest hits and tunes associated with legendary Chicago musicians such as Herbie Hancock. The performance is another in a series co-presented by Jazz in AZ and the ASU Kerr Cultural Center, made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation.

Judy Roberts is recognized as a worldwide jazz star through her international recordings and concert performances. Judy is best known for her fun-loving approach to an eclectic and extensive repertoire, her hard-swinging piano playing, her ability to combine lush and sensitive vocals with rapid-fire scat singing, and for her unique ability to communicate with her audience in a relaxed and intimate style. A multiple Grammy nominee with 20-plus album releases, Judy performs regularly at Remington's in Scottsdale and is a guest artist at numerous jazz festivals and parties.

By the age of 15, Greg Fishman was working professionally around Chicago. He has performed with the Woody Herman and Louie Bellson big bands, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Ralph Burns and Don Menza, as well as extensively with Judy Roberts. Among his musical associations is the acoustic duo Two for Brazil with Paulinho Garcia that creates a warm, intimate sound reminiscent of the legendary pairing of João Gilberto and Stan Getz. Widely regarded as an authority on his musical idol, Getz, Greg is one of the most respected and prolific author-educators and a widely sought-after jazz saxophone teacher who has students, including many worldwide via Skype.

Downbeat Magazine stated, "Neal Seroka's unique guitar style shifts cleverly between country-tinged picking and sophisticated modal patterns." Neal has a signature approach to both his bass and guitar lines, played on the unusual Fender VI electric bass guitar. His decades of performances with Judy show in their shared grooves and harmonic chemistry, documented on Neal's CD, “Beeline Highway.”

Wayne Messmer has wowed Cubs fans for years with his classic rendition of the national anthem. But, as Judy Roberts discovered, he is equally at home in an intimate jazz piano-vocal duo. “I discovered this one evening several years ago when Wayne dropped by a Chicago club where I was working, and I invited him to sit in. I was

treated to a shockingly gorgeous rendition of 'You Are Too Beautiful,' delivered as though Wayne was channeling the ghost of Johnny Hartman.” After many more guest spots during the next few years, Judy and Wayne went into the studio to record an album titled “So Lucky to Be Loving You.” ` The CD and Wayne's performance at the Kerr will, said Judy, “show off Wayne's multiple musical personalities of that very

few people have ever heard - - soft, sexy, jazzy, tender, playful. And another surprise, jazz whistling!”

Tickets are available at the Kerr box office, 6110 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; by phone at 480-596-2660; and online at www.jazzinaz.org, $24 general admission, $29 reserved seating.

Traditional, authentic acoustic Latin jazz. That's the music that will charge the air when the band Sancocho takes the stage at the Jazz in AZ party on Sunday, March 18, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale.

Sancocho is led by one of Phoenix's most versatile and in-demand bassists,

Felix Sainz. He is joined by legendary Valley multi-instrumentalist Richie Oropeza on vibes, sax and flute; accomplished Latin

musicians Tony Valenzuela-percussion, Robbie Carrillo-drums and Marcos Crego-piano, and featuring Rebecca de la Torre-vocals and keys.

Rebecca has sung in church, performed in local music theatre productions and sung with the Arizona Opera. Although she began picking out melodies on the piano at the age of 4, the first instrument she studied formally was

the trombone, and was an award-winning all-state first-trombonist all through junior high and high school. Gifted in math, Rebecca earned a degree in engineering on scholarship from ASU.

While working as an engineer full-time, Rebecca continued to study voice and piano, and moonlight singing with local Latin and jazz bands. But part-time music wasn't enough; Rebecca eventually left her position as a senior engineer with a large defense contractor to become a full-time musician, a decision she considers one of the best of her life.

Join Rebecca and all of the members of Sancocho for a first-rate Latin Jazz experience in the hip surrounds of Kazimierz World Wine Bar - - a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages. Kaz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $15 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply.

News from Out & About

“The Season” has arrived in the Valley, bringing more than our usual profusion of jazz events with four jazz festivals in March

thand April: the 35 Paradise Valley Jazz Party th(mainstream, swing, bebop), 29 Glendale

Jazz and Blues Festival (mainstream, blues), th13 Chandler Jazz Festival (mainstream,

ndclassic) and 2 Desert Ridge Jazz Festival (smooth-contemporary).

The Paradise Valley party on April 21-22 will feature 15 hours of jazz by 20 jazz stars, including globally renowned drummer and native Phoenician Lewis Nash, the event staged for the first time at the Musical Instrumental Museum. The free outdoor Chandler festival offers 30 bands involving 170 musicians during the two-day event, March 30-31. The Desert Ridge will be staged April 14-15 outdoors at a resort hotel, featuring many national stars including local saxophonist Marion Meadows. No lineup has been announced yet for the free outdoor Glendale festival. Details of all four events are in the Calendar listing of this issue.

The Buzz: “Red-Hot Chicago Jazz” has fans excited about the March 7 performance at the Kerr center of three Chicagoans, pianist-vocalist Judy Roberts and her husband, saxophonist Greg Fishman, for the March 7 Jazz in AZ concert at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center. The concert also will feature Neal Seroka on guitar and bass guitar, plus guest vocalist, Wayne Messmer, who sings National Anthem for Chicago Cubs-Blackhawks games, who also is known as a jazz whistler. When Judy was performing in Chicago last summer, she also recorded a CD with Messmer, titled “So Lucky to be Loving You.”

Related news involves Fishman's newest book, “Hip Licks for Saxophone,” with its four-CD play-along set. He describes it as “a musical reference book, like a dictionary of great licks in all 12 (musical) keys, for each key and chord type. You can open the book to any page and just start playing.” He added, “One of the challenges of writing a book like this is to make it useful to a wide variety of players at all levels, from the aspiring saxophonist to the seasoned professional. The material in this book is part of my personal practice routine, which I'm happy to share.” More information is at gregfishmanjazzstudios.com

from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, March 15, invited by host Tom Coulson. A one-hour version of the show will air from 7 to 8 a.m. Sunday March 25. The full program will be archived at http://fullmoonhacksaw.com.

Earshots: The tribute to Dave Cook on New Year's Day at the Rhythm Room was one of the best shows in the past 10 years. Dave is using a walker since his stroke last fall, but was in good spirits to speak and greet everyone. Performances by professional musicians who donated their talent included the four Jazz Divas, Margo Reed, Nancy Gee, Sherry Roberson and Delphine Cortez. The Cadillac Men (Stan Devereaux-Cordell Conway-Phil Hendrix) rocked the house with a cappella and soul sounds. Dennis Rowland sang, and then assembled a vocal group of Diana Lee, Roscoe Taylor, Jimmie McElroy, Roscoe Taylor + Conway, Hendrix and Devereaux for more doo-wop. Also performing were guitarists Donnie Dean and Eric Bart, saxophonists Dan Pinson and Jerry Donato, organist Papa John DeFrancesco, bassists Selwyn Reames and Chris Finet, trumpeters Denny Monce and Jesse McGuire, drummers Dom Moio, Adam Clark and Tim Downs, and flutist Joe Corral. Saxophonist Mary Petrich was joined by her teen-age student, alto saxophonist Emily Mae Clocksin; in addition to Young Sounds and playing flute in her church every Sunday, Emily will attend the Curry Music Camp in Flagstaff on a scholarship; she is the granddaughter of Jazz in AZ members Joanne and Chuck Wolff.

Musicians contributed their time and talent once again on Feb. 8 at the Rhythm Room in memory of Girley Reed, the matriarch of the musical Reed family, who died Jan. 22 at the age of 91. The opening set featured a cappella songs by the five Reeds (Margo, Michael, Francine, Mellody, Lavergne) and, later, an original song by Girley's grandchildren, Girley Angelica and Michael Reed Jr. The music continued with Felix Sainz, Joel Robin, Delphine Cortez, Andy Gonzales, Larry Reed, Hans Olson, Diana Lee, Joe Costello, Jimmie McElroy, Chris Gough, Lucius Parr and many more.

Final Bar: John Levy, 99, bassist with George Shearing, Stuff Smith, worked with Billie Holiday, business manager for Ramsey Lewis, Joe Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Cannonball Adderly, Nancy Wilson, Wes Montgomery, Roberta Flack, etc., Jan. 20 in Altadena, Calif.; Bob Brookmeyer, 81, valve trombonist-arranger-educator -New England Conservatory of

What do the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Tower of Power, the Diamondbacks and the Valley's music scene have in common?

The answer is: They've all been graced by the soulful trumpet of Jesse McGuire,

who will be performing a concert in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:30

p.m. As a special feature, vocalist Sherry Roberson will join Jesse for a Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong-Ella Fitzgerald tribute. The rhythm section will be Beth Lederman-piano, Mike King-bass and John Lewis-drums.

From his humble beginnings as a 9-year-old nervously playing his first trumpet solo in church in Ypsilanti, Mich., Jesse overcame the reading disorder dyslexia to become lead trumpet in the world's most prestigious jazz big band, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in New York City under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. During his two-year tour with LCJO, Jesse

received international acclaim for his lead trumpet and solo performances.

Sherry Roberson came to the Valley in 1959, and has a long history of club and concert performances in the Valley, as well as stints in Istanbul and Bangkok. Sherry cites Ella as her all-time favorite vocalist and will undoubtedly deliver a worthy tribute to “The First Lady of Song.”

Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) was created by John Edward Hasse, PhD, curator of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, to honor jazz as an original American art form. JAM is celebrated from coast to coast with events ranging from free concerts to educational programs. The first year observance was in 2001, with initial funding was provided by the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation.

Tickets are $20 reserved, $18 students/seniors reserved; non-reserved $16, $14 students/seniors, available at the Kerr Box office, by phone at 480-596-2660 or online at www.asukerr.com.

April is Jazz Appreciation Month – and there is no better way to celebrate than attending the Jazz in AZ party on Sunday, April 15, from 3 to 5 p.m., featuring one of the finest ensembles available in our community, the Fred Forney Quartet. The

party is at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale.

Forney is one of the most in-demand freelance trumpeters in the Valley and

first-call lead trumpet player for touring stars and Broadway shows. He has played with internationally known jazz artists, touring the U.S. and Japan with the Bobby Caldwell Big Band to play the world-famous Blue Note jazz clubs in Tokyo and Osaka. His recorded work includes “Into the Mist" (Summit Records), "Playground," "MCC Jazz Faculty," "Then and Now," "MCC Jazz Ensembles" and "Faculty Nonet" (Sea Breeze Records), "Justice for the Earth" with Chuck

Marohnic and Seeds (Ravenswave Records), and "The Armand Boatman Be Bop Revolution" (Tempest Records). Fred is also the founder of the Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, which will be reconstituting in the fall; and is a respected music educator. In recognition of excellence in teaching, Fred was awarded the Mesa Community College Outstanding Teacher Award for the academic year 2005-2006.

Nick Manson is a talented jazz pianist and keyboardist, a two-time Emmy Award-winning composer, arranger an. His piano playing is swinging, lyrical, consistently inventive and quite individualistic. Throughout his career, Nick's performances always have been accessible and creative, appealing to a

wide audience, yet remaining true to himself.

Completing the rhythm section are the ubiquitous ever-swinging bassist Dwight Kilian and the amazingly accomplished and jazz-vocabulary-rich young drummer Wes Anderson. A feature of the party performance will be a new work by Fred, "Three Moods for Jazz Quartet." He will

also choose, talk about and play music by select jazz artists with April birthdays. Fred Forney: always keepin' it fresh!

Kazimierz World Wine Bar is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages. Kaz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the Jazz in AZ party is $15 to the general public; (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply.

thFor its 35 year, the annual Paradise Valley Jazz Party will be presented for the first time at the renowned Musical Instrument Museum on April 21-22, continuing the exciting jam-session format of past years with added new elements.

Among the new features will be a re-creation of the Quintette du Hot Club de France (the Stephane Grappelli-Django Reinhardt combo) led by bassist Brian Torff, a former Grappelli colleague. He will perform with guitarists Don Vappie from New Orleans and local favorite Stan Sorenson, and young violin whiz Aaron Weinstein from New York City.

“I've always been a fan of that kind of music, happy music that makes you smile when you hear it,” Miller said. The gypsy-swing sound was created in 1934 in France, evolving from backstage jams of the leaders on violin and guitar, plus acoustic bass and rhythm guitar. When the quartet began to tour, Reinhardt's brother Joseph was added on second rhythm guitar. The sound lives on today in homage combos throughout the world.

The weekend party was launched in 1978 by Miller and his late wife, Sue. He adopted the concept of ever-changing sets from Dick Gibson's long-running annual event in Colorado Springs, Colo. Miller also produced the first two Jazz in AZ outdoor festivals, and three jazz festivals in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), Mexico. In 2011, he was selected as a Jazz Hero by the international Jazz Journalists Association for his continuous proactivity for live jazz. Miller has attended jazz festivals around the world, from Newport, R.I. and New Orleans, La., to Montreux, Switzerland, and Nice, France. He recently returned from a jazz festival in Havana, Cuba, and next summer will attend one in St.-Emilion in the Bordeaux region of France.

The party format combines musicians in ever-changing aggregations, resulting in exciting improvisations that are the trademark of the jazz idiom. The party's guest of honor this year will be pianist Shelly Berg, a musician, producer and educator whose lively playing style energizes audiences.

Among the repeat favorites returning will be pianists Tamir Hendelman (Barbra Streisand's new accompanist) and Dave Frishberg, drummers Lewis Nash (Phoenix-born global star) and Butch Miles (formerly with Count Basie band), trombonist Bill Watrous, and saxophonists Houston Person, Lew Tabackin and Don Menza. Also performing will be trumpeters Claudio Roditi and Marvin Stamm, guitarist Marty

Ashby, pianist Michael Kocour, trombonist Jay Ashby, bassists Dwayne Dolphin and Paul Keller, and drummer Roger Humphries.

During the past 34 years, the parties have featured the world's most legendary jazz artists, including singers Joe Williams and Diana Krall; trumpeters Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry and Red Rodney; saxophonists Benny Carter, Zoot Sims and Bud Shank; guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli, Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel; pianist-vocalist Jay “Hootie” McShann, congero Poncho Sanchez,

drummers Bobby Rosengarden and Grady Tate, pianists Roland Hanna and Dick Hyman, bassists Milt Hinton and Major Holley, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans.

The party weekend consists of three sessions, noon to 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The Arizona State University Jazz Band led by Kocour will open Sunday's session. Some sets will be staged in the 300-seat MIM theater, and others with cocktail-style seating in various areas of the museum, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix 85050.

Party admission is $195 for a weekend badge for all Saturday and Sunday sessions, plus lunch on Sunday. Individual sessions are $55 for Saturday afternoon, $55 for Saturday night, and $95 for the Sunday session, including lunch. For more information, go to paradisevalleyjazz.com or themim.org/performances-events/jazzparty, or call the MIM ticket office, 480-478-6000. The 13th annual Chandler Jazz Festival will feature some of the finest worldwide touring musicians in the current jazz scene, as well as many of the greatest cats living right here in our valley. Two days, 12 venues, 30 bands, 170 jazz musicians, and all free! The festival takes over historic downtown Chandler on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, from 4:45 to 9 p.m. Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, plus evening performances at restaurants.

Friday night, the festival presents its first ever “B-3 Organ Night.” The Hammond B-3 organ is the instrument made famous by musical greats such as Ray Charles, Jimmie Smith and Joey DeFrancesco. On March 30, the B-3 will be swingin' with four of Arizona's finest jazz organ artists, Chris Pena (with the Four Year Plan) and Shea Marshall (with the Energy Trio), plus Royce Murray and Papa John DeFrancesco. The finale will feature all four organists on dual B-3s.

The Saturday night headliner is New York's Dominick Farinacci and his band. Farinacci will play trumpet and flugelhorn (dominickfarinacci.com), with Kris Bowers on piano (krisbowersmusic.com), Yasushi Nakamura on bass (yasushinakamura.com), Rodney Green on drums and Keita Ogawa
