THE JAZZ GUMBO PROJECT Mark Saturday August 11 th in your calendar! Any Jazz fan or musician that was living in Sin City in the early 90’s remembers Tex Richardson and the Killa Band. The band members changed from time to time because Tex was known to help every musician that had talent get a foothold in Las Vegas. His last “band” was an 18 piece orchestra! Tex “ascended” about a week ago and there was a New Orleans style (laughing, singing, dancing and drinking) memorial held at the Texas station last Tuesday. Tex was nothing short of royalty and Las Vegas had a Jazzy/Funky nightlife culture with improvisation and original compositions that hasn’t been seen since. Until now! Tex figured out how to herd cats. He got the independent spirits of the best musical talent in Sin City to work together for the sake of the music. “Old School the way it used to be and New School the way it could be” is how he described it in an interview with local celebrity host Amie Joe. Things have changed a lot since the 90’s and the new venue management doesn’t realize that there is an underground Jazz culture in Las Vegas. It’s the locals AND the musicians that live and work here that make up that culture and the new owners don’t have a clue.

THE JAZZ GUMBO PROJECT is built in the spirit of what Tex Richardson and The Killa Band showed us was possible. Live music as it could be if we just come together for the sake of the music. We are starting small and invite you to join us in bringing “cool” back to Las Vegas.

SATURDAY AUGUST 11TH NAIMA AND JAZZ GUMBO WILL BE DELIVERING JAZZ!

Just like Gumbo there will be a mix of the best of Ella Fitzgerald, Anita Baker, Phyllis Hyman, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Sade, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Sting and more. Expect to hear new translations of some of the world’s favorite music. Naima and Jazz Gumbo will also present original compositions by some of the greatest working musicians in the business.

The musicians in JAZZ GUMBO are a mix of flavors for a special taste, just like the ingredients in a good Gumbo. The best in the business will be getting their groove on so you’ll never jam to the same show twice. Just like in the good old days. Standards and improv, smooth jazz, funky rhythms and straight ahead. JAZZ!!!

They say the best results come from love and I have been promoting Las Vegas’ Jazz culture on the radio and in Tradeshow Lifestyles Magazine for years. There has always been an underground jazz scene. Check out these back issues of TSL. February2012, January2011, April2011, May2011

The TV cameras will be there for artist interviews and to record the performances for broadcast on the CW network on cable and internet. So you’ll be able to check out the shows on demand and spread the word to your friends who love jazz.
